great location, clean and friendly hotel. Competitively priced. Booked a triple room and expected 1 double and 1 single - bonus when we got an extra single bed! Did the job for the one night we stayed there. Breakfast was not included in the price but the 9.50 euros we paid for full english was well worth the money!

Location was our priority and it was certainly central. Great deal with parking adjacent to hotel at good price. Only negative was that our tea/coffee tray was not cleaned and restocked for the second day little inconvenient for us for such a basic task for Jurys. The breakfasts as before was excellant

Close, but not TOO close

  • 30 Year Old Single Girl
  • Oct 22, 2012
I went with a friend to check out the city. We're 30 and single so loved a good night out on the town, but certainly not 21 anymore. It's a decently close walk, but luckily not so close that it was in the middle of the madness/noise of the nightlife. Hotel staff was extremely friendly. Accommodated our request for a room in the back of the building with separate beds for my friend and I. Room was clean and included hairdryer (very important). Parking is about 14 euro a day in garage. Breakfast is not included, but can be added for 9 euro a day.

Very Affordable

  • louthpolly
  • May 8, 2012
we got a great deal for a two night stay. Easy access to city centre. Bar and reception staff very friendly and helpful. the negative side, had requested a meal in the restaurant on the Sunday night (of a Bank Holiday weekend). The restaurant was closed at 7.30pm, which seemed to be very early. Food was cold, served on a cold plate. We complained to the waitress who told us there was nothing could be done as the manager was off. Only disappointing aspect of an otherwise very good weekend

Nice and also affordable

Really, we just used the hotel as a staging place so that we could catch an early flight out of Dublin the next morning, closing out our vacation to Ireland. The only disappointment was that the hotel is not as close to the airport as we had hoped. It's actually 15 miles or so. In this sense, we thought the hotel's website, touting proximity to the airport, was a bit misleading

The Schoolhouse was a very pleasant place to stay. The staff were all very courteous, polite and friendly. We only had a few minor grumbles- the fan in our bathroom didn't work and the internet facilities weren't great. The TV reception wasn't very good either - but we didn't go to Dublin to watch TV! We tried to leave a tip with the receptionist for all the staff but she refused to take it!! Nice touch!

The apartments were perfectly located in the city centre of Dublin. Right down the street is Temple Bar area with tons of places to eat and drink. Just about a 1/2 mile walk to Guinness Storehouse, a few blocks away from the oldest bar and of course Christ Church Cathedral is less than 1/2 block away. Apartment was exactly as described and was a comfortable stay for the entire family.

The hotel staff was not well-trained. We had to ask for cutlery for example. They did not have chicken although the menu contained a lot of meals which contain chicken. We gave our voucher for the breakfast and they asked for it again after 5 minutes. They definitely need some trainig. Looks like never have done this job before. Anyway the location is perfect. The room was OK. The food was also good.

Fantastic stay in Dublin

  • Anonymous
  • May 8, 2011
We came into Dublin very early in the morning, previously sending an email asking if we could at least drop our bags at the hotel. We received a prompt and kind response, offering that we have tea or coffee in the sitting room, while our room was being prepared. Our room was ready almost immediately and were delighted by every part of our stay. The food was great, the service was wonderful, and it is in a beautiful quiet part of Dublin, within a ten to fifteen minute walk to busy shopping areas and historical sites. We would definitely stay at Butler's Townhouse again, and recommend it to friends, family and colleagues.

Stay at this Hotel!!!!!

  • Ginja
  • Aug 30, 2012
If I could give the Grand Canal Hotel 6 stars I would. Hands down, the best deal on a hotel I got on my trek across the UK and southern Ireland. We booked our room at around 1am the morning of our stay (we were on an over night train/ferry from London) and got to the hotel at 7am with no Euros (didn't know the exchange office didn't open till 9). The morning manager got us to an ATM so that we could pay the cab, offered to hold our bags for us (no charge), let us recover and use the internet in the very comfortable lobby, answered all of our questions with patients (we were irritatingly ignorant of how to get around Dublin) and managed to get us into our room 4 hours early so that we could take a nap (hadn't slept in 36 hours) before getting out to see the city. When we got to the room, we found that we had a beautiful view of the oldest football stadium in existence, the bathroom was very large and well equipped, the bed was comfortable, there were all of the little extras we could want, and the whole place was spotless. Plus there was free wifi that was very fast. We wanted to try the restaurant and bar because they looked excellent, but we didn't make it back to the hotel until late, so I don't know if they are any good. But they certainly looked it. The hotel has a perfect location. It was 10 minutes from the port (if you are coming in by ferry) 10 minutes walking distance to downtown, and is in a very nice neighborhood. Close enough to everything be convenient but far enough away to be quite at night. The only complaint that I had about the hotel was that the room was a bit stuffy and hot. However, I will point out that we were there on the two hottest days of the entire year. So... While I'm sure there are other hotels in Dublin that are nicer and more extravagant, there is no way you could get a better deal. This is a 4 star hotel at a 2 star price. That makes it a 5 star booking for me.

I travel more than I woul like for work and occassionally find a hotel or B&B that makes the list of places that I would bring my Wife and children for holiday. The Grand Canal Hotel made the short list. The lobby and room were bright and airy, the Irish breakfast was devine; however, the staff separates this hotel from their comptitors.

Zentrales Ein-Paar-Nächte-Hotel

Sehr zentral gelegenes Hotel mitten in Temple Bar. (Fast) alles erlaufbar.

If you're a perfectionist who needs everything to be top notch, this place is not for you. The place is charming with it's quirks. I chose this mainly for the price and the location. The personnel were helpful and very nice. For light sleepers one does suggest the use of complimentary ear plugs as the noise from the bar and bypassing traffic may keep you awake.

We chose the Tara Towers as it was in the right location for the car touring we wanted to do south of Dublin. We checked in early (early flight into Dublin) with no problems. Room large, clean and comfortable but overheated so we had to open windows as it couldn't be adjusted. Food, bar and service were all excellent, and ample parking which is a bonus in Dublin! Have already recommended the hotel to others.

The location isn't great. Not the best part of the city. The room was clean as was the hotel. Bar and restaurant in the lobby, which was good as there is nothing else close by, unless you drive or take public transport. Staff were polite and helpful. Pizza served in the hotel was quite nice and reasonably priced. We had breakfast on the last morning @9am. It was terrible. Very little choice, the "hot" food was all cold. Tea/ coffee was served from a flask. Not pleasant. We seem to have only started eating when we were told that they were closing so to get anything else straight away. I would avoid it. Overall I would stay there again. It was reasonably priced and comfortable and served it purpose

You will be engulfed in the feeling of royalty. The concierge was wonderful and you can place your uncertainty about plans in their capable hands as they do everything in their power to smooth out any kinks you may have. We would highly recommend. The only reason we put 4 stars by the location is because you need to catch a bus or taxi into town. If you don't mind Dublin transit, and you shouldn't because they are most professional and efficient, you can catch a bus right around the corner from the hotel and ride into town for 2.15 euro each. This is much better than the 15.00euro to Trinity College area. You can pay 20 euro each for 2 days of Hop On/Hop Off bus rides and go all over the city in comfort and with a fully narrated (historical and somewhat humorous) guided tour with a map of each numbered stop and just get off and on when it suits you. It rained some, so to keep from walking in the torrential rain, we hopped on the bus and rode a while. Well worth it. The hotel is quiet and away from the noise and you will be jetted back into time and feel like you are in the 1830's but in romantic comfort. The pub is grand as well as the food is marvelous!

It was great. It is a real castle but the room was so modern. The bar is so beautiful. They do not have Hair Conditioner. It is far from the city but there is a bus(130) that goes directly to Center Dublin.

Sehr alte Bausubstanz

  • Holger
  • Oct 16, 2012

Romantic Getaway

Firstly, it is very easy to find the hotel which is great & the grounds are amazing. Perfect for a romantic weekend away!! It was a bit far out from the city which was fine for us but very near Dundrum shopping centre. I found some of the staff on reception not very welcoming however which was disappointing as we were very impressed otherwise. There was little choice on the bar menu (perhaps it was the time of day that we wanted to eat). The room was lovely- very comfortable bed & everything you could want was there! I would stay here again & would recommend it to a friend!

Helpful Staff, Convenient Location, Good Price

  • CTF Loves to Travel
  • Dec 3, 2012
The staff was very friendly and helpful, allowing us to store luggage before and after check in/check out. One young lady was exceptionally helpful with tips about where to shop and eat. The rooms were clean and reasonably priced. The location couldn't be beat for local shopping, restaurants, hop on/hop off bus, tours, etc.

A Great Stay!

  • Shamrock845

I emailed them that we would be arriving early and they said they would try to have our room available. It was and it allowed us to take a nap before exploring Dublin. We had some trouble with the elevator until a front desk lady explained the key to us. Plenty of laughs with that. Staff members were very helpful and friendly throughout the hotel. The bar food was fine and so was the breakfast but we usually ate elsewhere and had breakfast at a little shop directly across from the hotel. Hotel is a short walk to the tour bus and O'Connell Street. We did have to pay for wi-fi so that was the only con to our stay.
