Clean room great location

I really wanted something to eat when we returned to our room at 9:30 on a Friday night. We had been out all day and I wanted to get back early so we could pack our stuff up and grab a quick bite but they weren't serving food any longer! Also the receptionist told us the night before that breakfast began at 7 am, so we would be able to eat before we le for the airport. Breakfast did not begin until 8 am but we had to leave by 730! No food once again! We liked everything else about the room and the hotel.

Nice hotel, decent value

  • ZeusandMac
  • Mar 18, 2012
I traveled to Dublin in March and booked this hotel for a good deal (just under 70USD per night). For that price, I was pleased with what I found. The hotel is located to the west of the city center, 15 minutes or so, and it's in easy walk (or an even easier LUAS ride) down. I was in town mostly for business, so I would have appreciated more of a work space or wifi, but it's my fault for not looking into that earlier. There is free internet, but it's wired in the rooms and it was particularly slow most of the time. The hotel restaurant was serviceable but nothing spectacular. It is, however, located right next to a nice food market where you can purchase a variety of ready-made food. Had there been a kitchenette in the room, I would have been ecstatic. I will also say that, while the soundproofing between the rooms was adequate, I could hear every movement made from the hallway. There was only one night where this was truly an issue but it was more of a nuisance overall. I can see it being problematic if there are loud guests on your floor. Over all, I was pleased with what I received for the price I paid. However, I looked into the rates for my second trip and they're nearer to 200USD per night and I would absolutely not stay at the Maldron for that price.

Very good hotel

  • Apr 14, 2012
A very good hotel in particularly good location. Very pleasing open areas on ground floor. Reception staff friendly and helpful. Bedroom (on 5th floor overlooking O'Connell Street) good size and comfortable with pleasant bathroom. Brasserie restaurant a bit disappointing - staff attentive but food rather bland. Hotel as booked with e-bookers was very good value but breakfast expensive.

Great time in Dublin

  • CMRK
  • Mar 1, 2012
We stayed for five nights. Location was great. This was our second stay at the Gresham in six months. We must have gotten an upgrade during this stay as our bed was more comfortable. You could open the window in the room which was welcome as i enjoy the fresh air. Our bathroom had a separate tub and shower. I NEVER take a tub bath in a hotel but the tub was so clean and inviting I jumped in and soaked away the international flight. We had high tea one afternoon and it was great, almost too much food. Drinks at the bar were spendy but the bar was nice. Staff was very nice. Anna, in housekeeping was very helpful and located an ice bucket for us. Helped us with extra towels, etc. She's a good ambassador for the Gresham. Will stay again. See you next year.

May 2012 trip

  • Modest traveler
  • May 14, 2012
I booked this hotel for a first and last day of a trip to Ireland in May 2012. There were three people in the group so we used the three bed room. Felt like everything was from Ikea but had a good clean feel to it. If you are just going to use the room to sleep, shower, etc... it is a great location and perfectly adequate. There is a good breakfast buffet in the morning and the bar / restaurant has a good selection for dinner. Please note the kitchen closes at 10 pm local time so, don't expect to be able to come in and eat late.

Nice Experience

  • BamaBelle8
  • Apr 1, 2012
This hotel was a pleasant surprise. The staff was exceptional, the room was clean, and we were allowed to check in super early (without extra charges). The concierge desk was extremely helpful and everyone was very polite/friendly. The hotel/accommodations were neat and tidy. It is an older hotel, but very clean. The hotel was very busy hosting business events/parties but this did not interfere with service. The bar/restaurant is quite expensive which deterred us from trying it. The bed was not comfortable and the room temperature was HOT. For safety reasons, our window only opened about 4 inches so we were very warm the entire time. The front desk told us how to turn off the heat, but the room never really cooled down. The pillows were terrible, so we used our travel pillows (thankfully we brought them). The furniture was scratched up in places, yet clean and sturdy. We did not mind this, yet was surprised to see it. The location is about a 20 minute walk to St. Stephen's Green. Taxi cabs lined the driveway, but we walked most of the time. A couple of our destinations were far from the hotel, so we took a taxi. There are a couple of pubs about 3 blocks away (one place looked more like a restaurant than pub). Otherwise, you have to get to St. Stephen's before finding food/drink. Our major complaint about this hotel was the noise level on Saturday night. Previous reviewers mentioned that it could be noisy and they were right. We had to wear ear plugs to sleep that night (thank goodness we had some with us). Overall we are happy with our experience, for what we paid (which was extremely low). My attitude would be more negative if we had paid the advertised price per night found online. In the future, we plan to stay in a hotel closer to Dublin (the St. Stephen's area was lovely). It became irritating to walk so far at the end of a long day of sightseeing, and the taxi cabs were pretty expensive in our opinion. Bottom line: I would recommend this hotel to people that do not mind walking everywhere (and are physically able to do so), and to those that do not mind out of date decor/well worn furniture. I would also suggest finding a lower price than advertised.

Great place to stay for location. Right in Temple Bar - loads of pubs within seconds of walking, grocery store across the street, pickup for tour buses is about 2 blocks away, river and the oldest pub in Ireland is a short walk & airport bus picks up and drops off at the corner. Only draw back is the street noise, especially if you stay on the front of the building - Fleet street is hopping most nights, regardless of season or weather

The staff were great from check-in thru check-out. The rooms were great for me and my 17-yr-old son and the hotel was great for walking to Aviva stadium for the Ireland rugby match and heading into the city for dinner and live music. They also had a great workout facility and pool, which is perfect for working off the breakfast buffet. The walls are a bit thin if you happen to have some late night partiers coming home and singing...

GREAT!!

  • Nell75586
  • May 18, 2012
The best thing about this hotel was the location. You walk out of the hotel and you are in the city center where all the buses are and the tourist offices, its awesome. And its so easy to get around especially walking, everything is so close. The hotel restaurant wasn't that good and it was really expensive. Especially the breakfast. We got little breakfast pastries at the SPAR at the corner of the hotel for 1euro each and it was more than enough so do not waste your money. And you can get a full Irish breakfast for 7 euro anywhere. The hotel staff were phenomenal!! We stayed here because we know what to expect with a Best Western being from the US, but it exceeded out expectations!

Loved the character of the place. The exterior and grounds are well maintained 19th century, but the rooms are modern and clean. There's a nice bar downstairs with plenty of seating in the lounge area. They've also got a cash machine in the lobby, so you won't have to worry about hunting one down. Great location for visiting Dublin: 3 blocks from DART station, Aircoach bus stop is right out front, and it's close to some good restaurants.

I travel more than I woul like for work and occassionally find a hotel or B&B that makes the list of places that I would bring my Wife and children for holiday. The Grand Canal Hotel made the short list. The lobby and room were bright and airy, the Irish breakfast was devine; however, the staff separates this hotel from their comptitors.

Great for the price

  • an american in germany

I went here with a girlfriend. We picked it for both the price and the location. On both counts, it did not disappoint. The staff that we encountered were friendly and very helpful each time we had a question. What I did not like about the hotel: 1) the beds were hard as rock 2) there was virtually no counter space in the bathroom. As you can imagine, being 2 girls, we had a lot of stuff on us! 3) There were only 2 usable outlets in the room. Again, this posed an inconvenience to us as we had a lot of various gadgets on us. If you stay here, I highly recommend bringing a power strip with you. Overall though, it is a great hotel and I would definitely stay here again.

The Brooks was my home away from home the week of December 26, 2011 - January 1, 2012. I enjoyed my stay there, and for the most part had a great experience. Ordering room service was sometimes a bit of a challenge, since they didn't always pick up when you called. Had to try several times to get something in. After being out all day exploring, I didn't want to try and figure out where to eat. The food was good, but ordering was a pain. Also, on one occasion, I asked for half the amount of a side (wedges) and they gave me twice as much. They didn't charge me extra, but gave me way more than I asked. I booked a taxi the day before my last day there (as requested in their hotel book) as well as a wake up call two hours before the taxi was to arrive. The wake up call did not happen. I set my own alarm just in case, and I'm glad I did. According to the staff, it's automated, so not sure what happened. Overall, I was very happy with everything at the Brooks. Had no issue's with wifi while there, and also used their network center to check e-mail.

Great Location in Dublin

  • CMM in VA
  • Mar 12, 2012
Stayed four nights while visiting Dublin and northern part of the country. Staff very helpful, we arrived before check in and were able to drop our bags at the front desk so we didn't have to carry them with us while shopping that morning. Had a problem with heat in the room but were moved to another room. Nothing elegant about the rooms, and they are small, but they provide all that is needed. I did notice that the tub/shower floor was several inches higher than the bathroom floor making it awkward to step out, possibly a problem for those not stable on their feet (there are no hand rails). Main feature about this hotel is location. Dining area very nice, has a bar and stage where Irish dancers perform every night (dance show is free). The tourist office is right down the street where you can get lots of information about local attractions. Found a 24 hour cafe/convenience store about a block away.

All hotel and bar staff were very welcoming and friendly and the general overall service given was excellent for our requirements. The Irish dancing/music entertainment provided each night was an added bonus. The hotel location is extremely convenient for touring the city as the local/city tour buses and airlink bus all have stops within metres of the Arlington.
