Nice enough but needs more business

Will E

The hotel, as it says, is "ex" Sofitel. Some of the comments on various sites refer to it in its Sofitel label, some to it under the Pullman flag. They were mixed reviews. However, as of September 2009, what follows are hopefully useful comments.
We had been to Bordeaux on a cruise some years ago and my wife, in particular, loved the main shopping district. We thought it would be interesting to go back for a longer stay. One of the things I've learned over the years is that European hotels range greatly in guality and cost - and not necessarily in that relationship of one to the other. We've stayed in Sofitels and found them predictably good.
The price (in the package) for the hotel seemed very good relative to other Bordeaux properties, particularly downtown. The offset was that the location was "out there" - we don't drive in Europe. I presumed, as it turned out rightly, that public transport would solve the problem. In fact it did. Bordeaux has a wonderful tram/bus system that makes it easy to get from where the hotel is (an exposition center) downtown in about 20 minutes (our average). Also very economical (1.4 euro per the bus/tram trip). I would also add that taxis are both rare and rarely priced in Bordeaux - 40 euro to and from the airport to this location - probably more downtown with the congestion. Net, location wasn't optimal but then again the tradeoff is price for a 4 star hotel.
The hotel itself is very nicely done contemporary and as we like that from we were very happy with it. The room (lake facing "deluxe") was very pleasant if small with a double bed. Shower, not bath, which is fine for us.
What we enjoyed most was the restaurant. Very good food at prices (for a 3 course meal - typical) as good or better than what we saw on the streets downtown. Service was good although, given that we don't speak French, it took a bit to get clarity in what we wanted. Of the five nights we were there we ate in the hotel three and enjoyed them all. One reason of course we ate there three nights is that competition in the area is limited and once you're back to the hotel you're pretty much there for the evening (the buses stop running sometime after 9PM).
We hope there are some times when the hotel is busy - if it was better than 10% occupied when we were there it would suprise us. A result is that staffing is limited and, particularly in the restaurant, unable to overcome the boredom of 3-4 tables occupied.
Overall, a nice place at a good price (in our measure) that represents a tradeoff of location. While it is no negative on the hotel's quality, another time we'll stay downtown if only to see the city at night.

Excellent value; limited hours for the reception desk
-
Gene from Boston
- Sep 5, 2011
This apartment-hotel had basic furnishings, but very clean, well maintained, and in great condition. Amenities included digital television (HD, TNT), refrigerator, stove, and a full set of plates, cutlery, coffee pot, etc. They also had free Wifi (but see below). They also had a direct phone number to the room (free for incoming, pay for calling). The staff were very friendly.
I had only two or three smaller issues:
(1) As with many apartment-hotels, the hours are limited. In particular, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon on Saturday, something similar on Sunday; and the reception closes at 8 p.m. on weekdays. There's a code and key card to enter at other times. My airplane was late, and I hadn't thought about calling them in advance in case my airplane was late. Be sure to call. (They didn't put their e-mail on their web site. So, call by phone.)
(2) The hotel is hidden in an out-of-the-way plaza. It's only three blocks from the tram stop "Cours du Medoc". But print out a map in advance if you want to find the hotel easily.
(3) I have Linux on my laptop and at work. Their free Wifi was blocking the "ssh" protocol that is commonly used for Linux. I could surf the web, but I could not connect to my work computer because they block "ssh".

Hotel was very nice and clean. The staff was extremely helpful. Location was a little out of the city centre but the tram stop is right outside on the main road so was easy to get to (only 4 stops away from the city centre).
Would definitely consider this place the next time I'm in Bordeaux.

Good value for budget hotel

I found the staff here to be friendly and helpful, the room was basic but newly furnished, on the small side but neat and clean with a very decent shower and pillows.
The room was equipped with small kitchen, sink and fridge with kitchen supplies and coffee maker. The reception staff also didn't mind us eating a large left over picnic spread at the breakfast tables one night.
Although it is away from the central town teh tram is a minute walk away and ten minutes into the centre. The tram system is great for getting around too.
Cleaning and extras, like breakfast were charged at additional fees. But didn't bother with this as it was a short stay and bought breakfast supplies from the local supermarket (10 minutes away).
Not a flash hotel at all, basic but comfortable and clean and good value.

It is a great location, and a great value for the price, but there are nicer 2-star hotels in central Bordeaux. It's about a 10 minute walk from the tram that goes to the train station. Our room was quite noisy because there was construction going on outside all night - fortunately we had ear plugs. Even after the construction stopped it was still noisy. One nice feature is that the bed was the best one we've slept on lately, and we've been in several 2-star hotels in France over the last few weeks. Shower had good temperature and pressure. The recent renovations are a nice touch and there was good climate control.
