Staff terrific. Upgraded room disappointing--worst pillows ever. Came home with worst neck ache. Bed mattress hard uncomfortable. Furniture badly scraped and needed painting. Bath soap dish badly stained. Activities amateur. Pre show entertainment below high school level. Audio and microphones too loud and shrill, very unpleasant. Food average. Weather great. Beach and grounds very clean and nicely lanscapped. Tourist population very respectful and pleasant.

5-nights getaway

  • humblecouple
  • Dec 16, 2012
We're a couple in our 50-s. We really like to stay in Iberostars resorts - they have nice, well maintained properties, decent dining options and very friendly service. This resort provided everything we expected - clean and not very crowded beach, attentive personnel and very good gourmet dinners at their Mexican, French and Seafood restaurants - reservations were not too hard to get. Overall it was a good though short getaway - we enjoyed it a lot.

Lovely vacation spot

  • Melissa A
  • Apr 7, 2012
The hotel had beautiful, immaculate grounds, gorgeous beach with lots of chaise chairs and sun or shaded areas, good and plentiful food and drinks, helpful and friendly staff. The pool area was lovely, again with lots of chaise chairs and sun or shaded areas. My sister and I were traveling together and were pleased that the clientele varied widely - some honeymooners, some families, quite a few older (50s-60s) couples/groups. I would definitely recommend it!

I just had to review this one.

  • One Happy Dude
  • Dec 26, 2012
I never write reviews, and I've never said that before. But my conscience wouldn't let me escape reviewing this amazing hotel and experience, so briefly: I just got back from the Iberostar Grand Bavaro after staying there for 4 nights up to Xmas. It was true paradise. The hotel is like a European palace. There seem to be as many service workers there as there are hotel guests, and they truly are all very friendly and hospitable. They say not to tip at all inclusives but I just had to since so many of them were great people. The restaurants are top-notch and beach/pool areas are well-kept and spacious. I couldn't have asked for more from Iberostar. Definitely now a loyal fan.

A solid "OK"

  • traxxed
  • Sep 22, 2012
Most things were just OK. Here are the pros: *Generally a very very helpful and friendly staff *Nice variety of swimming pools *Beautiful grounds *Never ran short of free alcohol *Food was pretty decent and plentiful *Good security Cons: *No hot water in the room (and reported, but not fixed). Seriously, no hot water *No functioning telephone in the room *No air conditioning. Extremely hot and hard to sleep. Room stayed at 30 C the entire time. *My room was beside their nightclub, which was terribly loud and difficult to sleep *They advertise 6 restaurants. This is not really true. One of the 6 is open each night, however. *If you want to be close to the airport or any other part of town, this is not it. It's pretty far out the Cabeza de Toro Road.

Nice resort, but not a 4 or 5 star hotel. Room was too cold entire stay, constantly without face and hand towels. Food was average, staff friendly, but there was a language barrier. Staff needs to improve communications to guests, very poor. Paid for VIP transportation r/t to and from airport, had to pay for a taxi back to the airport ourselves $30.00, almost missed our flight, airport is a real zoo. Two oldest kids becane sick for two days each, throwing up.

Good relaxed getaway

  • Plymatt
  • Feb 22, 2012
The resort area was beautiful and provided the perfect setting for unwinding or finding interesting things to do. It seemed like a very family friendly place and a good place for gold, neither of which applied to me personally. Everything more or less shut down at night (also not overly important in my case). The food at the more casual restaurants did not seem to be freshly prepared, but the meal at La Yola was excellent.

It's our second time at Catalonia, and i noticed some difference with the staff. I think they are so busy that they were not paying so much attention to people. I missed the olás that EVERYBODY used to say. The manager at the buffet at the beach is very nice and professional, his name is Ruben and he'll do anything to please you.

Took a vacation here dec 2012. Had a wonderful time. The staff was excellent. I don't speak Spanish, but the had just enough people that spoke English there on staff. My American tummy was not use to the type of food they serve there. But there was plenty of food to choose from. The actual hotel is gorgeous. For the price, i was not expecting what we actually got. It was really worth more. There was always something to do on the resort. The beds are not as comfy as American beds, but it was not terrible. Once i got a few extra pillows, everything was jus fine. Would visit this resort again.

Great Value

  • Hammer1234321
  • Dec 2, 2012
Overall, this hotel was a great value. We had trouble with just about every electronic item in our room, but most of the staff was excellent. The one thing that is kind of annoying is that the room's power is only on if you have a room key in the room. If you leave a key card in the power switch when you leave the room, the staff will remove it when they make up the room, fill the minibar, etc. Then you come back to a hot room with an undersized A/C unit. Overall, the barstaff was very good. The waitstaff in most cases were good, but there were a few exceptions. The food was decent. Las Torres was a very good buffet. The Royal Gourmet was pretty good, but the lobster there was not very good. El Behique was an okay buffet and El Arrecife was a buffet and not very good. Bamboo was a fantastic chinese restaurant (probably my favorite of the restaurants I went to. El Rodizio was the Brazilian restaurant. I love the brazilian style restaurants, but it seemed the the meat was tenderized to the point that it had no texture arount the edges. Sumptuori is the Benihana style restaurant. It was good, but we weren't sat at one of the grilles, so it wasn't as fun as you would expect. I did not get to go to the steakhouse, but I had beef fillets several times while we were there. The beef there certainly isn't as good as American beef, but the ox was fairly close. The seafood was not as good as I expected. The pools and the beach were great. The palladium hotels probably have about 1km of beach. We went in late November. At this time of year, we found that you don't want to sleep in because the best beach weather is in the morning starting around 8:00am. It usually gets pretty cloudy/rainy later in the afternoon. Some of the perks you get over the other parts of the resort by staying in the Royal Suites are reservations in the al a carte restaurants, point-to-point transportation #you don't have to use the train that loops arond the resort), free wi-fi, and butler service.

Excellent Vacation

  • Chris and Kathy from NYC
  • Dec 29, 2012
Took my fiancee here Christmas week 2012. We upgraded to Royal Services, think that's a must. We got a nice romantic suite with a balcony overlooking the beach. Nice, clean room...couple of small oddities like doorstops that my toes found a couple times...but very very nice. The beds were great, very firm which I love. Nice in-room jacuzzi. No beer in the room fridge, glad we stopped and picked up a few bottles from a local store on the way. Great beach, great beach amenities- beds, chairs etc. There is a lot of seaweed, but it comes in patches and the staff rake it and bag it up enough so that its not a problem. The Royal Services pool is kind of far from the beach (and our room) but the regular trolleys make up for that...plus RS guests can call for transport via golf cart...nice touch. Walking was cute for the first day but not something I'd like to do regularly. The first night we ate at the French place, it was okay. From then on out we ate at the Gabi, which was much better altho the food still seemed a little bland. This was out first time at an all-inclusive so maybe that's to be expected, especially when cooking for so many people...but coming fro Manhattan we're a bit picky about food. Nevertheless, I had low expectations and the Gabi definitely exceeded them. Nice pool with pool bar, jacuzzis (not heated but very nice), tile chaise lounges built in with drink stands. Surprisingly good beef at the Gabi and in general. The best food we had was at Los Cocos, which at 45.00 is a pricey add on, but everything was great. Huge twin lobster tails, huge tasty rib-eye....grilled about 20 feet away. Easily the best food there. We didn't do any excursions surprisingly. We decided that the beach and pool were enough to keep us occupied...and they were. We walked through the buffets on the beach, but really were not interested by anything there. Tried a bit of paella, which was good but a little bland....the product of cooking for so many people I guess. Wish there had been some spices within eyesight. We tried the Japanese restaurant, an additional 25.00 for RS guests, 30.00 for others. Nice guys, the habachi chef put on a good show, but overall not impressed with the food. Kind of boring stir fry. Again, we're from Manhattan and there's tons of excellent restaurants...maybe we're just being picky. We didn't go to any shows, though there seemed to be plenty. I played poker for about an hour in the casino, which opens at 7pm. It's a smaller casino, about half slots with a handful of blackjack tables, couple of roulette tables and one poker table. Nice room with its own bar. The resort was huge, I really was surprised bu how much area it covers. And it has tons of places to hang out in, lots of cool loungy spots, plenty of bars... We would definitely go back- extremely good value. We do feel the Royal Services package is a must.

Great People and Best Kids Club!

  • slovakmom
  • Dec 6, 2012
The best kids club!!! Elizabeth and Awilda made our stay so fun. The kids (4&5) loved to go and do all the fun stuff. Great service at the hotel! The grounds were beautiful! People worked so hard. We are blessed to go to places like this for vacation. Housekeeping was great too. Cons: the beach was very nice, but it did have a lot of seaweed. Not a big deal, but we are spoiled by Mexico pristine beaches:o). Also the bathroom design...what was the architect thinking??? Not very practical. Food was good, not exceptional, but typical all inclusive standard.

We traveled with VIP services. Great food options especially the steak made to order. The 2 main issues experienced were weak Wi-Fi and kept disconnecting.it was a free service that didn't work well. The second issues was we were without power for about 8 hours during the day. Which means no A/C and the heat quickly became unbearable. Then we were eating in the main buffet area and the whole complex list power in the evening. People were using lights on cell phone to find their children and people screaming scared. It was pitch dark and very unsettling. There was no compensation or apology from anyone. They blamed it on hurricane Sandy which was 2 weeks prior. Not buying it.

Great Resort! The grounds are maintained on a daily basis therefore giving the resort that "lush" feel to it. Our ocean view from the third floor was AMAZING. The room was serviced everyday (including the mini-bar) The staff here are truly wonderful and try to cater to your every need. The entertainment at the pool bar is extremely funny and keeps you engaged with several games that one may join in. The only downfall is the food selection at the buffet. The food choices are sub-par at best and really cater more to the "European" crowd. The drinks are amazing (Brugal,Mamajuana, Jack) being my faves!! I cant forget the RED RED Wine! A great 4 star resort which included everything I desired with the exception of the poor food choices which degrades it down 1 star. Overall, great resort with a great staff.

We really like the RIU chain of resorts and this one was just as good as the others we've stayed in. The resort was very clean overall and the staff was very attentive. They even gave us an additional hour and a half after check out time without an additional charge. We would highly recommend the VIP area where we had access to our own swimming pool and swim up bar. My only complaint is the food wasn't the best at the reservation restaurants but the buffets were good. Will stay here again if we go back to Punta Cana.

Secluded... too much so ?

  • Jul 8, 2009
Going to this luxurious complex for a R&R 5-day stay, we knew it was not 'all inclusive' as most are in the Dominican Republic. We therefore expected a higher quality of service and discrete but polished and efficient attention from the staff. Except when it comes to the customs we could fly through both ways (!) as the international airport is basically on the property grounds, we cannot say we got the level of service we were expecting. Staff is very gracious and tries their best but clearly is largely undertrained for a 5-star. Another disappointment came with the ridiculous mark-ups we were forced to pay for any item (a very far from extravagant dinner for two ends up above the $120 mark, probably $160 with 2 glasses of wine and some water) as we were basically trapped on the grounds of "Punta Cana". We came to discover -we should have known better- that Punta Cana is not really the name of a town or a village, but more of a marketing concept (with fences around it, though). Too bad, because the natural setting is truly gorgeous, and extremely well preserved too. All in all, yes we had a very restful stay in a great natural environment and well designed and kept hotel. Seclusion however is something you want to decide for yourself, when you want it, rather than it being imposed upon you by design. When this feeling of being trapped is combined with hefty and unjustified prices, it turned into not such a great experience overall...

Everything was amazing! Food was great, lots of selections. Service is top notch! Everybody was super nice. Property is gorgeous, well maintained. Only downside is the beach is basically unswimable. Lots of seaweed. I dont think its the hotels fault, its just nature. Hotel tries to clean it up all day long but still comes back.

Sanctuary is a gorgeous property with great amenities and amazing staff! As soon as you get there they welcome you "home" and make you feel that you are at home! The staff was very kind and helpful as well as a lot of fun! Miami was the best! Events on the resort are great and quite entertaining. Food is very good (outside of dinner at Blue Marlin). The wildlife at the resort is amazing, especially the giant spiders which are very harmless and a part of the natural beauty! We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. Orbitz was also great in assuring us about our reservation and airport travel through the change over of resort management! So glad we were there with Salamader resort instead of Secrets!

Que Bueno!

Overall the trip itself was great and enjoyed by all parties. The hotel we stayed at was part of a larger complex that included their other hotels that were all interconnected via a walkway along the beach. Driving up the exterior was similar to a Spanish style plantation, Grecian columns, white on a sandy yellow, with touches of Moroccan designs. Upon entering the lobby it changed into a French Louis the 14th décor with stained glass. The lobby also contained a sports bar, gift shop, café (which is featured in the sites photos) and jewelry store. It also served as the place to book excursions around the island such as snorkeling trips, horseback riding, to trips to town. The rooms were nicely furnished and came with a liquor bar that would be replenished should one consume all of the liquor. There were a variety of actives offered every day from water aerobics to bachata lessons. Room service came by every day and was always friendly. I personally ran into an issue the required maintenance and they came by within the hour. The grounds looks exactly as depicted in the hotels photos and the wet bar also has small seating areas along the side as well as seats at the bar. The pool itself was large and at its deepest point was about 4’ deep. There were also titled chaises that one could lay on and drink. Being that the hotel is located closer to the Atlantic the waters were a bit rougher than the Caribbean, but just as gorgeous. Of course there were the usual suspects, locals selling tourist goods and discounted excursions. It was nice that the hotel actually had a street that was nothing but small shops including a pharmacy and doctor office. They of course sold everything from sunscreen, water, mamajuana, and water. The one thing that me and my party we upset about was the nights that locals came in to sell goods such as carvings, jewelry, paintings and such. Understandably this is how they make additional money but to be harassed every five feet was bit obnoxious by the third day. Also there was an ATM, but it only dispensed pesos. Which was silly considering most people preferred the American dollar, and one would have to leave the resort to exchange the pesos to dollars. Every night there were shows in the theater that were actually well put together. The lobby offered free Wi-Fi, but for a limited amount of time every day. The food was also on point. They had a lobster dinner one night that was open to everyone, just required that you wear decent clothing and not your beach cover-up. Of all the restaurants we ate at the worst was the Japanese. The rice was overcooked and the seafood lacked, which was surprising considering we were on an island. Other than that the food selection was extensive and the even offered traditional Spanish food almost every day. I personally never left the dinning hall unsatisfied over the course of the week. Overall we had a much better time in DR this year and I would recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a good deal.

This place is PURE PARADISE. Check in was quick and Victor our check in rep gave us the connecting rooms we requested so we could be connected to our children. The restaurants were all fabulous and food was terrific. You could ALWAYS find something you liked at any time of day. The pools were amazing and our kids LOVED the teen club. The animation team was wonderful and personable and kept you very entertained all day long. The kids did the swimming with sharks and stingray excursion and bananna boating and everyone had a blast. There was lots of seaweed on the beach but i think that was due to the remnants of hurricane ernesto which just missed them, the week prior to our stay. But the sand is increadible and the water was perfect temp. Our location was middle of the resort villa 3 so you were never too far from anything. If you hopped on the tram, you were good to go and it came by very regularly but mostly we just chose to walk, to burn off all the delicious food we had! Also, free Wi Fi in the lobby and teen club was great. The nightly shows were very entertaining and this is our third time to PC. we will DEFINATELY be going back to Ocean Blue!

Great Weather, Great Value

  • Dec 15, 2011
The staff is extremely nice except at the front desk, who is normally busy and probably inundated with unreasonable requests from guests that forget this is a cheap hotel. Our room was very clean, but had some minor issues. There were some bugs, and our water pressure wasn't great in the shower. The food/waitstaff was good for breakfast, just okay for lunch and excellent at the specialty restaurants for dinner. I suspect that the liquor was watered down quite a bit, but we put in the extra effort to make up for it. Bavaro seemed to be the best choice for us, since Palace only got one exclusive restaurant/pool. I don't think we would've paid extra for the nicer room assuming that that's also part of it. This was my second trip to Punta Cana. I went to Ocean Blue & Sand in 2006. This hotel was much better than that one, but I suspect they have all gotten much better in the past 5 years.

2nd time around!

  • Mr. Nicewatch
  • Jul 11, 2012
This was our 2nd trip to the Princess. We had AMAZING service from our bartenders; Raphy (Tu Elis El HOMBRE), Jonathan, and our old friend Ranaldo!! However the level of service received from the rest of the staff was less than stellar. We upgraded to platinum and felt that the staff associated at that level were borderline rude. Lock EVERYTHING in the safe. My wife and our friend both had make-up stolen (different rooms).. That's right... hide your lipstick ladies! The food was better than I remember, but will still have you reaching for the pepto after a few days. Despite the service, the platinum upgrade was worth it. we enjoyed the top shelf liquor, even though it is only available in 2 low traffic areas, the beach front beds were awesome, the sand is the best I have encountered, and the water is breath-taking. 6 years ago this location was easily the best all-inclusive destination value around. It is becoming more popular and tehrefore more pricey. That makes some of the downfalls harder to overlook. Ultimately I probably will not make a 3rd trip to the Bavaro Princess, but I am glad I made the first 2!! last thought.. we may have been the only Americans on the property. The Eropeans amazed me with rudeness!

Me and my wife had a great time stayed on the beach next to the pool. The location was perfect, the food was great. I recommend buying bottle of water from the store i think i got sick from their water. There were plenty of europeans and they can be rude, i didn't encounter a lot of american which was weird. Overall we may come back, oh also Hotel is too big. lol

Wonderful Time

  • Stacy88
  • Apr 19, 2012
We had a wonderful time. The service was great. Always a smile, hello or High 5 from all the staff. The food was good . There is some repetition on the buffet, but if you change up what you eat, there are plenty of items so you can have something different every night. Service in the main buffet restaurant was fabulous, we had the same waiter every night. He knew what we liked to drink after the first night and had it ready for us, as soon as we walked in. We were with a group of 4 adults and 4 teenagers. The entertainment people did a great job including our teenagers in activities. They enjoyed themselves. The beaches are awesome, we loved walking the what seemed to be an endless beach. Our rooms was clean and the front desk got us everything we asked of them. My only complaint would be that we were there the last week before renovations and two days before we left they started emptying out the place and closing a few of the restaurants, which I felt was a bit unfare to us, I would have hoped they would have waited until the hotel was empty. We didn't let that get in the way of the good time we were having in a beautiful location. We all said that we would return to this hotel again. I liked the size of the resort you didn't have to walk far to get from your room to the pool to the beach and could easily walk back to the room to get something if you needed it.

Horrible , Traumatic experience at Natura

On arrival at this hotel after a long time traveling we attempted to check in at Natura Park I was told by the front desk clerk that the hotel was OVERBOOKED. I asked to speak to the Front desk supervisor and explained to him that this vacation was already fully paid for. The staff were extremely unfriendly ,treated us like we were bothering them and did not seem to care. They informed me i would be put in another closeby hotel. We waited 2hrs at the front desk and an were refused access to a phone to call the our travel agency.. We asked to speak to the hotel manager , they refused to track him down. We had no other choice but to be "bumped" as they termed it to another nearby hotel . Horrible experience at this hotel and would not recommend it to even a dog !

Thieves Work Here; Poor Management

Besides my cell phones that were stolen by A SUPERVISOR OF ONE OF THE RESTARUANTS, service was horrible. Food was bland, lacking variety, the good food was gone instantly. The buffet frequently ran out of plates, tables lacked silverware, and some tables too small to sit at. There was no choice of restaurants; we were told where to go and when, and were only allowed 3 evenings of a la cart dining. Restaurant service was lacking; we were ignored at times. Housekeeping was inconsistent. Washcloths were left only twice in 8 days. The minibar consisted of only 2 bottles of soda, 2 cans of beer, and 1 bottle of water. The only 110 power outlet in the room had no 3rd prong, and would not hold a plug. Maintenance basically said, "tough." A spotlight blared in our balcony all night. The bed-hard. Bathroom tiles and tub needed refinishing, and the retractable drying rack was broken. The TV-horrible reception. Our map and information was inaccurate, w/hard-to-read print on scrap paper w/someone's personal information on the other side. There was no listing for room service. This is NOT an Eco friendly resort! The back is trashed w/broken tile and glass, chairs, tables, trash, broken down tractor equipment, seaweed-it's horrifying. The ATM on the property is set up incorrectly- only accepting cash withdrawals from savings. Spa reception was rude, and messed up our reservation twice! There was no air conditioning anywhere but in our rooms. The beach itself is overcrowded and not upkept, littered with trash and seaweed. We were harassed by vendors on the beach and on the main paths of the resort. The pool patio was also overcrowded. The resort advertised jet skis; there are none. There was no advertising of some events nor free watersports. Nightlife was lacking-1 show nightly.
