Decent value, nice beach location, bad service

  • Nick and Maya
  • Mar 27, 2012
For the price, this resort was decent and is in a nice location. The beach and surroundings were pretty good though not spectacular. The beach was not too crowded and there were usually plenty of chairs available there and at the pool. The food and drinks were so-so or even below average, but hey, they're free since it's all-inclusive. The other guests were no problem - a mix of spring breakers, who weren't out of control, with older American and European retirees and such. The customer service, on the other hand, needs some serious help. When we arrive, around 1:30 am, we encountered problems with the check-in. The guy at the counter looked us up and found our reservation in the computer, but refused to check us in without a "voucher" as he kept repeating. Unlike every online e-reservation I've ever made for a hotel, flight, rental car, etc, this one expected a piece of paper showing our reservation even though his computer showed our fully-paid reservation. Only after we'd spoken to several different people (none of whom were obviously in charge, and who had very limited English ability among them) did they assist my girlfriend in getting on a working computer to print out the reservation email. Once we got to the room (it was almost 3am by this point), we found that the shower did not work at all, there was no hot water there or in the sink, and that the toilet was problematic. Only the next morning did they fix the hot water (they just had to flip a switch apparently) and make the shower operable. The toilet remained problematic (noisy at all times, incredibly slow to refill) throughout our stay. The beds were rather hard but not too bad I suppose. The maid service was generally pretty good. The restaurant foods were well below average; the fish in particular should be avoided as it was not fresh (ironic for a beach resort). Worst of all was the service at the restaurants. It was generally sluggish and unhelpful across the board. At the pasta restaurant (the most popular and thus most crowded), the customer service was downright atrocious. The hostess was a (expletive deleted) and left us and others to wait in the waiting area, without taking our names for the line, for 10-15 minutes at a time. She clearly had too many responsibilities but she could have been nicer about it - it is her job to serve customers after all. The wait staff was slightly less mean but no more helpful. When my girlfriend's food was cold (she noticed after a couple bites - I think it included fish again), she sent it back and told them it was cold. The waiter eventually returned with it, about 20 minutes later, having simply re-warmed the same slightly-eaten plate of food. I thought any waiter would know to bring a new plate, this time actually hot. How incompetent can they get? We gave up and left. So yeah, the beach is nice, the drinks are plentiful but very watered-down, and the food is so-so, but the service is terrible. I guess you get what you pay for.

We had a good time, but it was hard to get bottled water. The room was dirty, the floor was full of sand. Beautiful beach and you can get topless! :)You have to try the four tracks trip guy in front of the hotel. Look for chef 30 30 , the best service. Stay: 2 days

Nice hotel

  • Little Katrina
  • May 6, 2012
The hotel is located close to the beach. It has everything you need as basic. The room was large, but everything was in old condition. There is nothing to do in Juan Dolio - just a few restaurants and small markets. I took a city tour to Santo Domingo, that was very exciting. Also took a trip to Catalina Island and had a really great time there. The beach was so beautiful, food and drinks were included, i did snorkeling and enjoyed it very much.

The Resort is pretty much as described, you get an apartment with bed and living room furniture. The balconies are nice and the staff is a pleasure. You are across the street from the beach which was a big plus. There is lots of new construction surrounding the property so you will wake up to the beautiful sound of heavy equipment everyday. Other than that I have no complaints. For the current rate I will visit Plaza Real Resort again.

  • good time seeker
  • May 5, 2012
Beginning was bad, did not get the room i reserved, they took me to a room in the back of the hotel with one bed instead of 2, the smell of mole was very bad. after i called to get my money back, they offered me another room after 6 and 1/2 hrs. of wait .it was very nice, i stays for 3 hrs but can't stand another hr. after i turned off the AC, the bathroom floor was wet d/t the humidity of the room and the moles odor was overwhelming . i called the manager again, this time i got a room in the 4th floor without mole. Then, everything was great after that, staff very nice, most of them speak English also. food was good . the restaurants were great. decor really nice.Mattress not comfortable at all. i will go back because the manager and the staffs know me now. they promised me a great room when i am come back . so make sure u call them first let them know u would not take any room with moles and humidity and u need a room with good mattress. Also u better off bring ur own towels.

The staff could not be more friendly or accomodating to your needs. Everyone greets you with a smile! The check-in process is slow, but they hold your bags and allow you to explore the hotel while you wait for your room. The food is nothing spectacular, but it is edible and you get what you pay for. The drinks are abundant and the bartenders make the whole experience fun. There are no water sports available, so this would strictly be a hotel made for relaxation. The pools are clean, the rooms are basic, though the bathrooms could use an update, but overall thanks to the scenery, the staff and the gorgeous weather, I would return.
