I chose the hotel because it was centrally located and we could see and do a lot of things in the afternoon we were in San Jose. They are renovating the lobby area and when they are done it will be a perfect downtown location, on the corner, having a coffee or a meal watching people walk by (it is in a pedestrian zone). Right now they have the restaurant and bar opposite the reception area and it does quite well. What is really great is that they have airport transportation which is only 25US Dollars.

Just one block from the plaza de cultural and all the local sites. Good bar and restaurant across the street and gringo fast food joints. Gave us a free upgrade with the outdoor jacuzzi.

It has a great view of San Jose from mnt. You need a car as food and everything is down the mountain. It is very small and the staff seemed to be helpful. If you want to get away from town this will be great. I only had one night stay.

We Loved Our Stay

We stayed three nights at the Barcelo and enjoyed every one of the! The gardens were lovely, and the buffet was delicious. The hotel was rather distant from the airport, but it was a straight shot and easy to find. Our drive to downtown San Jose cost between $7 and $9 in a cab and didn't take too long. Everyone at the hotel was helpful and friendly. We plan to stay here on our next visit to Costa Rica.

The breakfast was the best part!

We stopped in San Jose for one night due to a connecting flight issue and chose this location. They have pools, shuttles that comes and gets you at the airport for free and have restaurants in the hotel as well as a "mall" across the street. It was a bit chilly for us to actually get in the pool, but the drinks were nice and the grilled chicken we had across the street for dinner was amazing! The next morning we went down stairs for the buffet breakfast and everything we ate was wonderful. Sitting by the pool with quiet breeze, eating a tropical breakfast was just right to start out a day off to the Nicoya Peninsula.
Overall the experience was clean, friendly and super convenient.

The hotel is perfectly located. One block from the o bustling Avenida Central, one block from the famous Del Rey and Key Largo, and close to shopping and restaurants. The Casino in the hotel has zero ambiance but good payouts and there are 3 other casinos less than 2 blocks away

great alternative to downtown

This hotel pays close attention to detail. The staff, especially the receptionist on duty thoughout my 6 night stay ,always greeted me with a smile and was always eager to help me. The pool looked welcoming, but it was lousy weather when I visited in November. The breakfast buffet was excellent with a little variety each day. The restaurant menu wasn't very large, but geat food. I will stay here again if I stay in San Jose again.

Decent hotel but bad location

The hotel was decent, the restaurant was good. Specially the breakfast was really good. The staff was very polite and friendly. I also got a free complimentary drink coupon. The round trip shuttle service to airport is very convenient. Please be aware that the shuttle service is not through hotel. Its through Gray line. And the shuttle might not even have any logo or identification. There would be a person with your name sign waiting for you at the airport for pickup.
The only problem with this hotel is the location. The neighborhood was pretty bad. I was there only for a night and totally avoided stepping out of the hotel.

The hotel was not horrible, but the place where is located is a high crime area.
The staff was hepful with us but I met some unhappy customers. The room was clean but there is room for improvement like changing the sheets more often. The lady in the breakfast was the best thing of the whole experience.

The experience was awesome. The people were very hospitable and well educated. Low crime and excellent customer service. The country was so beautiful I couldnt believe my eyes, I had to pinch myself because I thought I was dreaming. Overall I give it an A for everything despite the fact I only lasted 6 days.

The room was clean, and had a great view of the garden and pool. The staff is very friendly and even put a refrigerator in our room for storing medicines.

Great safe and clean hotel in central San Jose

After driving through San Jose and not seeing much of the city's safest place, i have to say we were comforted to arrive at the hotel. It's safeguarded and it is actually located in a nice area of the capital. The service was amazing, and we immediately ate at their restaurant which was delicious and affordable.
The room is nice but not amazing. I think the mattress and sheets are a bit outdated and it was a bit cold at night.
Breakfast was great and overall the hotel was of great value for its price.

Our children are both studying abroad in Costa Rica, this hotel was recommended by my daughter's Tico Mami and Papi. Although we were only able to spend one night there with our kids, this was a perfect place to meet. It is close to where they are going to school and gave us an impression of the Costa Rica they were exposed to. The hotel is quaint and beautiful...the rooms are super clean and well kept. The really great thing about this hotel is the staff, I don't think I've met nicer people anywhere in the world...If my wife and I ever make it back to Costa Rica we would go out of our way to stay there again. The restaurant is great, and a perfect place to have a conversation with the ones you love...some good food, a couple cerveza's and accomidating staff...they let us stay late...All in all, a magical evening. [...]...your english rocks...[...], thanks for letting us stay late!

The property was beautiful.An historic church on the site. Walking trails. Hot spring pool. Spa. Staff accomodating. However, the internet did not work while we were there. The rooms had a musty smell. Small TV. Otherwise, this is the best place to stay in that area. Price was right.

The staff was friendly, I definitely had my favorites. The hotel was small but nice, didn't mind the older style of it as it had all the necessities. Things you should know: When booking tours through the hotel, keep in mind that they will charge an exchange fee in addition to the cost for the tours; it's not the US, they aren't required to inform you. Our single bedroom was small and the bathroom wall didn't go all the way up to the ceiling, the wall stopped midway and was open to the bedroom...make sure you keep the fan on and the TV volume up. There were only three pre-set options for breakfast, dinner was amazing there, you really can't go wrong with your selections.

The staff treated us royally. They were responsive and helpful as well as very personable.
The building is very old, but is being refurbished and has some wonderful features. If you are looking for Holiday Inn, this isn't it. If you want character and charm, book Hotel Santo Tomas!
The furnishing were very nice and the beds quite comfortable.

I was thrilled. This place was so much better than any upgraded suite at any hotel in the states. It had a real kitchen w/ large stainless steel fridge / freezer, oven, microwave, stove, dishes, utensils, pots, a measuring cup, tea kettle, coffee machine, etc. Not that you'd be cooking there, but it was a truly livable space. It felt like I was subletting someone's apartment in a really nice condo. There was a semi separate living room w/ futon couch, 2 bathrooms, then the Queen sized bedroom w/ a door for added privacy just in case there was a 3rd guest. My wife and I loved it. The layout and decorations are on point, efficient use of space, loved the wood trim. The pics don't do it justice. The surrounding neighborhood of Escazu is really exclusive with high end condo complexes, all in large walled enclosures w/ 24 hour guards at the gates. The hotel has the same setup, hence security is assured, but I did not see any vagrancy or suspicious activity on my evening walks. There a a few plaza's in short walking distance, but you'd probably need to get a cab to go to the nearby Multiplaza Shopping mall or the Central Downtown area, each ride should run you a little less than 6000 colones. The free Hotel's breakfast was not typical so you will not get Gallo Pinto there, but it's still great, most notably for the Paris-Grade Croissants that they serve, papaya and pineapple, assorted cheeses, and great smooth Costa Rican coffee. The staff was very friendly and helpful, I tip my hat to receptionists Eunice and Yantzee, the rec'd taxi drivers were great too. The in-room WiFi worked after the tech helped me with it. The pool, jacuzzi and gym looked great but I never used them. We used the hotel mostly as a central hub from which we went on various tours. The only reason I gave the 4 as opposed to a 5 is because it would have been ideally situated if in short walking distance from the MultiPlaza. Overall, this hotel was great and if in Costa Rica again, this will be my 1st choice.

Stayed just one night at the end of our Costa Rica trip. Beautiful hotel, wonderful restaurant, SUPER comfortable beds; but I wouldn't venture too far from the grounds (if at all). It was a nice little retreat in a surprisingly urban setting.

We stayed here for the first night we got into Costa Rica, and the last, before flying out. The shuttle was right there when we got arrived, which was very helpful, the reception was pleasant, the design of the hotel is very Costa Rican, and everything was satisfactory. We had breakfast the morning after we arrived, and it was a very ample and tasty hot breakfast, with eggs made to order. We were amazed to find that it came with the room! Very great value.

The stay was great, it is next to a large lovely
park and about a 15 min. walk to downtown and
museums. The breakfast was incl. and it was great
food. My only complaint was when we arrived at the airport and called for a ride the person at the desk
could not verify our hotel reservation and told us we could not have their shuttle service and we should take a cab.
When we arrived at the hotel he apologized to us that
he made a mistake and they should have picked us up. They did give us a shuttle back to the airport.

This beautiful hotel had all the amenities and excellent service. A wonderful pool with a view of palm trees and distant mountains, close to excellent restaurants. A very responsive hotel staff. Tour services were top notch to the many beautiful locations in this remarkable country. I attended a conference and the room was well appointed and comfortable. The food in the retaurant was expensive but high quality, and the staff readily recommended local alternatives. The hoel deserves its four stars. A fine family vacation spot to which we would gladly return.

Great services and food. Employees were very friendly and helpful. Room and restaurants were quiet and relaxing. Food served was above average; buffets offered lots of variety and servers were great. Front desk staff was helpful and friendly and followed through with offers to help us locate some lost items. Distance is close to airport but not so close and away from air traffic patterns that you don't hear noisy planes. There are no stores in close walking distance. We left ipads, expensive cameras, and computer out in room and never had any issues with theft. Prices of souvenirs in hotel store were overpriced but that is pretty normal.
