A great hotel with an ideal location for all that Shanghai has to offer, terrific view of the Bund! Staff were helpful and welcoming trying to meet the needs of a wide range of nationalities (some who seem to have no manners!). Loads of places to eat nearby, and wine shops and pub mean the expensive hotel prices can be avoided.

The location for this hotel is great. Room is not "clean" for 4 star standard. Sound-prof of the room is very bad, you can hear what is going on next door. Breakfast is pretty good (including both Chinese and Western food), but spaces (tables) are limited. Do not take taxi lineup outside the hotel. 1. they do not go anywhere except airport. 2. they will try to charge you more (do not pay anything above the meter)

Grand Central Hotel Shanghai

  • Mar 27, 2011
Beautiful hotel! We've stayed at a couple high end hotels in Shanghai and this was by far the better of the two. Very helpful staff whos english was very good. Concierge helped us with lots of travel stuff. [...] when we got there they had no rooms with kings. It was a little annoying, but luckily the "twins" were pretty big.

Best Location and 5-star all the way

  • Greg
  • Mar 26, 2011
We were really looking for a perfectly located hotel, and this is the best location for tourists by far. You are one small block from the heart of Nanjing Shopping road, and one block from the East Nanjing subway station (from the hotel, walk to your right to the end of the block, cross the street to your left, go 20 feet, and you are there). You are then one stop from the Pearl Tower, one stop from People's Square and its park and major museums (although it is only about a 7 minute walk to Peoples Square – so we just walked), perhaps 2 stops to the Yu Yuan gardens, 3 stops to Xin Tian Di, 3-4 stops from the French Concession. And it is an easy walk to the Bund. Shops and restaurants surround it. For a tourist, you can't get any better. Right next to this hotel is the Sofitel hotel, the Howard Johnsons Shanghai, and the Shanghai Central Hotel, which is the 4-star version of this hotel, and looked very nice – it was being renovated when we were here (March 20-25, 2011). This is a true 5-star hotel with people that run to grab your luggage as you arrive and bring it up to your room for you. Someone's full time job it to open the lobby door for you as you come/go. It has a beautiful lobby, a nice pool and hot tub on the fifth floor, a billiards room, a very nice gym, everything you would expect. They give you a pillow menu, the room comes with free packaged coffee and a French press (you can buy milk at the pastry store across the street to the back, or the Lawsons convenience store across the street in the front). Big TV has about 7 English speaking channels, including HBO and Cinemax. Bathrooms are excellent; free wired internet in room (free wireless in lobby). The front desk staff spoke English better than at other hotels in China. The only bad thing was that the breakfast buffet wasn't included with our room, and costs 192 rmb (about $30) per person. We skipped it entirely and just ate at nearby restaurants or one of at least 3 nearby Starbucks. We stayed at two different hotels in Shanghai - the Salvo and this one, the Grand Central. The Grand Central is much nicer on every level.

Very Good Value

  • MarcoPolo
  • May 11, 2011
Location is very convenient with most attractions a short taxi ride ($2-3) or subway ride ($.50-1.00) away. Subway staion is 10 minute walk. Neighborhood has a couple grocery stores, food vendors and local restaurants. As to sanitaion concerns, no one in our group of 5 experienced any "intestinal incidents" from street food. The local park is interesting in the morning as many people come for different kinds of individual and group exercise. The hotel is very nice, with a moderately sized lobby, good staff with enough English speakers, nice pool and hot tub. Did not use the restaurant but it looked nice. Room was a spacious 3 bedroom with living room, dining table and small but efficient kitchen with refrigerator, stove and microwave. There were dishes for 4 and chopsticks but we had to request and pay about $3 extra for silverware and a frying pan. Two bedrooms had fairly comfortable queen beds while the third small bedroom had a twin that was very hard. I slept on with a comforter under me for some softness. The living room couch is large enough for an adult to sleep on. Each bathroom had a tub with shower. We were in town for 2.5 days. We enjoyed the excellent displays and activities at the Science and Technology Museum in Pudong which also has several good Imax shows. The Oriental Pearl Tower at night gave us great views of the lights of this city of 17 million. The Shanghai Aquarium next door was very good, as was the Shanghai City Museum in the base of the tower, with great reproductions of old Shanghai buildings, stores, dress and Chinese and Western autos from the early to mid 1900s. Walking the Bund at night and seeing the Shanghai families and couples is fun. We went to the shopping area around Yu Yuan Garden and met friends for dinner. They had eaten lunch at the tea house in the little lake in the center of the shopping area and said it was good but very pricey. We went to the Ningbo Dumpling Restaurant across the plaza and went to the second level for dinner. They have several small cooking areas with different kinds of food prepared and on the counter for you to pick up with prices clearly marked. Very good food, wide selection and our family of 5 ate for about $30. Had dessert at the Dairy Queen next door. We rode the maglev train from the airport to Pudong (435 kph or 261 mph), very impressive smooth ride. Arrival and departure at Shangahi Pudong airport was easy and quick, even going thru immigration on our departure at about 0730.

We had a very nice modern room with very comfortable king size bed. It was well serviced and spotlessly clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful - particularly at the concierge desk. Description
Five-star hotel near prime Shanghai shopping and sightseeing The Howard Johnson brand has gone upscale in China compared to its American roots. This modern 27-story hotel earned a five-star rating when it opened in 2003. However, this hotel is a modest entry in Shanghai's crowded five-star category. The hotel flanks the pedestrian mall portion of Nanjing Road, which has long been called China's number one shopping street. A five-minute walk east leads guest to the Bund, while a five-minute walk west takes guests to People's Square. Highlights Prime location in the heart of Nanjing Road Pedestrian MallFive-minute walk to the Bund or People's SquareTwo restaurants and a wine barFree parking, a rarity in Shanghai Rooms The 360 ample rooms -- 127 of them suites -- in this 27-story building have a marble bathroom, safe, mini-bar, large writing table, flat-screen television, and free high-speed Internet. The combination of patterns and colors in the rooms are striking, with dark redwood furniture, yellow-and-white Mondrian grid fabric on a chair, brown block-pattern carpet, and bronze jacquard linens. Features The hotel's prime location along Nanjing Road pedestrian mall is its top selling point. Guests can reach two of Shanghai's top tourist destinations -- the Bund and People's Square -- within a five-minute walk. Countless restaurants and shops lie within blocks of the hotel. If guests choose to dine in, they can sip a drink at the lobby wine bar or choose from Chinese or Western fare at the two restaurants on site. The spa includes a sauna and steam bath, indoor pool, and hot tub. Parking is free for hotel guests -- a rarity in Shanghai. Great for families, or single,

  • Walter W.
  • Dec 23, 2011
This hotel has a truly excellent location, very short walk to the square and the best pedestrian shopping street in Shanghai, and to the Bund. The food was excellent, as was the room. The staff were very helpful, and helped to arrange two excellent tours (to the water city, a must, and a river trip at night (spectacular). I had to prompt them to check other tour companies that had tours running in the off season, but the result was great; nearly private tours with one other charming family or traveling companion each time. The price was quite reasonable, for a central big city hotel. I would definately choose to stay in this hotel again if going to Shanghai as a tourist.

A good value-for-money hotel in

  • ROBERT
  • Oct 24, 2010
A good value-for-money hotel in a great location. While rooms are large and the 'original' floor boards have been retained, it is time for the floors to be upgraded (for health and safety) and some furniture should be replaced. Staff assistance in the main lobby area was very good. Room service was not so good. A good range of food was provided at breakfast but the 'hot' food was often too cold to enjoy. Other food areas for lunch/dinner etc were very disappointing.

Great value in the Bund

  • Deloryan
  • Apr 24, 2012
Stayed five nights and were able to get to all of Shanghai's attractions easily from the hotel. Within walking distance of the pedestrian mall, Bund and subway. Hotel has a lot of old character even though it is a bit dated in some aspects. We loved the antique furniture in the hallways. English was limited at the front desk but we managed fine. We couldn't get the room to cool down enough. Not sure of the AC was on since it was cool outside.

Tastefully renovated. Courteous service. One of the best locations. Inexpensive. The only complaint is the maid service because something is always missing after they clean the room whether it be a towel, complimentary tea bags, shower gel, shampoo, etc. I stayed 4 night and they clearly did not vacuum the room for that duration. Free internet service is great. Breakfast was not included with the booking so I do not know. Overall experience is GREAT HOTEL FOR THE MONEY!

A Great Boutique Hotel

  • Chinafile
  • Dec 17, 2011
This hotel was recommended to me by friends in Beijing and I can gladly recommend it to you. My room was large with a very comfortable king bed and nice seating area with desk and sofas and a great bathroom that was, at least for my room, open to the rest of the room - so not ideal in all situations. Everthing was in fine condition overall. The walls had some marks. A new paint job would make the rooms look gorgeous. If you are looking for a standard, highend chain hotel, this is not your place. If you want have a romantic weekend, or stay at a place you will be excited to tell your friends about, this is it. The area around the hotel is park like with lots of trees and vegetation and the metro is a few blocks away. It is on a somewhat busy street so expect some street noise. I will return to this hotel on my next trip to Shanghai.

It was hard to communicate with the hotel from USA so I was not able to get the airport pickup service and I had to spent 50 dollars in taxi. Also the breaksfast starts at 6:30AM but really is 7:15AM. What else to say, it is China!

Sleek, modern hotel with every comfort. The staff, most of whom speak good English, go out of their way to make sure you have what you need. This was our first visit to China and before we arrived, we found that our flight within China got rescheduled. We called the hotel and they were good enough to explain about trains within China and even booked train tickets for us. The tickets were waiting for us when we arrived and we paid cash. The hotel is located above a shopping mall (reception is on the 25th floor) -- the mall has some very good restaurants on the 7th and 8th floors, a supermarket in the basement, and the Zhongshan Park metro station connected from the basement too. It's just 5 stops away from Nanjing Rd E (the stop for the Bund) and so easy to use - one way tkt is 4 yuan. The hotel room was very comfortable -- great bed, spacious room and bathroom, very nice amenities. Our room rate did not include breakfast but on the first day we paid for the buffet breakfast on the 26th floor restaurant which was really worth it. It was so, so good (try the Chinese options - really! My husband declared that from now on he's going to make congee for breakfast every day when we get back home because it's such a soothing breakfast). We had so much that we ate a late lunch and didn't need dinner. There's a French bakery in the basement of the mall with great croissants (we go to France regularly and they are comparable in quality)... so we just bought a few croissants and order a pot of coffee from room service the following 2 mornings. The bathroom has a huge window that looks into the bedroom but don't worry, there are blinds controlled by a switch and if you mess with it just a bit, you can get it to completely cover the window. There's a shower stall as well as a tub, a clothesline (if you need it), etc. The shower water pressure is excellent -- there's both a rain shower head as well as a handheld shower. Plush bathrobes and slippers are provided. We really felt like we were in the lap of luxury... all for one hundred twenty one US dollars a night. [...]. We would definitely stay here again without a doubt but only if we could get this special deal. For business travelers whose hotel is being paid for it shouldn't be a problem.

very nice and great service / staff. I would have preferred a more central location, nearer to shopping, restaurants etc. did not know the geography and shanghai is very large. Fortunately taxis are inexpensive and everywhere. Make sure you have someone write down where you are going in chinese characters.

This is an excellent hotel for businness trips, a very nice building (50 floor) and have all the facilities that you may need like any other international hotel, you will no find other option with a good price like 120 USD per nigth. The location is good at 10 mins of downtown in a nice area of Pudong. Internet Free in all rooms and public areas. The moorning bufette has all international and local meals. Taxis and any other service are outside and the conceirge people are kindly with the tourists. Other options in the financial area are at 300-400 USD night. Of course we will return to this hotel. We saw other options like hollyday inn and these are in downtown but to many traffic and people in the outside streets.

Hua Ting experience

  • Oz0075
  • Oct 22, 2011
I've stayed at the Hua Ting for more than 10 years attending various Conferences in Shanghai. Its convenientlly located mid way between Hongqiao, the domestic airport and Pudong, the International airport, so travel in and out is easy. Take the Maglev train from Pudong to Longyang station and its only 15 minutes by cab to the hotel. The staff are great, nothing is an inconvenience. The restaurants have great food and bar is a handy meeting place. The downside is the Hua Tingrooms need a major refurbishment to bring it's guest rooms up to international standards. Its certainly excellent value for money for a short stay.
