Authentic and cheap

This hotel was a perfect location if your looking for a nice quiet authentic old Beijing experience. We didn't feel like we were in a big city, and there was so much to explore. This isn't for the Hilton Inn types. Staff was friendly and helpfull. Breakfast was good, you could even make your own omelette. We were only there for a couple days, so it was nice to just step outside your hotel and see some of the historic and charming beauty of old Beijing. We enjoyed just getting lost in the winding alleyways. Room was cramped but very clean, I would stay there again! Just a stroll away from funky shops and neat little restaurants.

Real Beijing, with comforts

From this well located hotel in Beijing's historic hutong's we exhaustively explored this gigantic city in 5 days. Many sites, Drum & Bell Towers, Hou Hai Lake & many restaurants & bars were within easy walking distance. Everything else was easily reached via subway with the closest station a short walk away. Walking through the hutong gave us an amazing, intimate view of the lives of regular people, just what we wanted! We also found and enjoyed wonderful bread and baked goods from tiny neighborhood shops there. Getting directions to the hotel was a bit of a challenge, but the well located Tourist Office nearby got us pointed in the right direction. A tour company the hotel contacted for our day trip to the Great Wall changed details of the trip without telling us until we asked. But we also saw a great alternate site. So in the end it all worked out fine - given that we had almost no Chinese, and people made a great effort to help us.

The area remains a complex labyrinth of alleyways and traditional Beijing Houses - the courtyard. There are many different stylish bars and restaurants in walking distance to both local and foreign tourists. The location of the hotel allows overnight guests and tourists a chance to truly experience some of the charms of the area, replete with old man and women going through their taijiquan routine, old men lavishing attention on their birds and the strains of the Jinghu - a two-string spiked fiddle used in Peking Opera, two men playing chess with many others watching, kids playing on the ground. Quiet, comfortable Hutong experience

  • Jenniper
  • Mar 24, 2011
Great service and staff, very informative and helpful. Most of the staff spoke at least some English. Website is a little misleading, in that the breakfast served in the restaurant/bar is 18Y per person/day. Their Great Wall tours and night shows are a good value, and transportation is included. Location is a little tricky for taxis to get to, but if you figure out the local bus/subway routes, getting around can be very easy. We would absolutely go back again!

Unusual site

Taxi's can't get to the hotel. Our cab driver called the hotel and they came in a bicycle-rickshaw and picked us up and took us to the hotel. The hotel was friendly, modern, and clean. The bathroom walls of glass was a bit unusual. The hotel represented good value. However, the hotel's bar/breakfast did not represent very good value. Spending time in a hutong is a very interesting experience, but perhaps not for the faint of heart.
