A couple nights in Beijing
-
China on Foot
- Apr 6, 2012
The strongest point of this hotel is that it is a 10 minute walk from the gates of Forbidden City. I don't think there are many other hotels this close.
The staff are friendly and the restaurant is good with a mix of Asian and Western cuisine. Sometimes it seems the staff has little experience, i.e. they set the table but forget the utensils. Some of the staff speak very good English, so no worries there.
From a Western viewpoint, the room was average and nothing to write home about. Maybe from a Chinese perspective it is better. Order the deluxe room; at least it will be above ground.
Bring your own shaving stuff or you will have to buy what is in the room.
The bed was fine.
I would have preferred wireless internet. The hotel supplies a LAN cable and the wall jack works once you figure out which jack to use. The other jack is for something else but it isn't clearly marked.
Overall, I'd gladly stay there again. No regrets

No problem whatsoever. Standard amenities for a Days Inn hotel. I partially chose the hotal for the location, but, though near the Forbidden City, other amenities such as shops are not particularly good here.

We had a great time at the Capitel Hotel Beijing. We ate at the place downstairs and it was pretty good, though a bit pricey compared to what else is available. The pool falicities were nice, though we spent most of our time out of hotel anyways, so we did not take advantage of most of the ammentieis.

Hip boutique hotel near the Forbidden City Celebrated Chinese architect Pei Zhu designed the stylish Hotel Kapok, which was considered Beijing's first boutique hotel when it opened in 2006. Glass shimmers everywhere in this five-story building, from the faceted glass façade (which resembles a lantern at night) to the glass wall that encloses each bathroom. Guests can explore the more traditional side of Beijing with ease. A ten-minute walk leads guests to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, as well as the countless shops and night market along Wangfujing Street. Highlights Hip boutique hotel10-minute walk to Forbidden CityEye-catching Book BarCourtyard rooms with private gardensFree Wi-Fi access Rooms Hotel Kapok does not offer "standard" rooms. The hotel has "fashion rooms" instead, in keeping with its high trend factor. The 89 rooms lean toward the minimalist side, with streamlined modern furniture and lots of glass. All rooms have a flat-screen television, mini-bar, and free high-speed Internet access. Fashion rooms measure in at 355 square feet. Larger courtyard rooms (538 square feet) enjoy their own little private gardens. Suites range in size from 645 to 1,076 square feet. Kapok suites include indulgent oversized soak tubs. Features Eye-catching design elements pop from every corner of this boutique hotel. Intricate white latticework weaves throughout the Xiangjianba restaurant, which serves Chinese and Western fare. Tall bamboo plants add a greenhouse feel to the glass lobby. Bookshelves and sling-back chairs stagger along the staircase in the Book Bar. Good location and decent price. We actually stayed here twice on our trip. The first room smelled like smoke in a non smoking room. The second room was fine. The beds were a bit hard but that is China. It was soft enough but it wasn't a US mattress.
Overall I would stay here again.

The location was between the night market and Forbidden City. Both were short walks away. The hotel staff, especially the bellmen were polite and helpful and spoke engish very well. I took a tour to the Great wall one day and walked to the Forbidden city the other. Both were worthwhile experiences.

Beijing hotel conveniently located on Wangfujing shopping street Location is the top selling point of this 206-room Chinese hotel. The property stands in the heart of the Wangfujing shopping street, next to Oriental Plaza and the enormous Wangfujing Bookstore. Guests can stroll to the Wangfujing subway station on line 1 in five minutes, Donghuamen night market within 10 minutes, and the Forbidden City in 15 minutes. Business and executive rooms are extra spacious. HighlightsLocated in the heart of Wangfujing shopping street10- to 15-minute walk to Donghuamen night market and Forbidden CitySpacious business and executive rooms Rooms Many of the 206 rooms and suites encircle an open central atrium. All rooms come with a mini-bar, safe, bathrobe, television with satellite channels, and free high-speed Internet access (fees may apply). The small budget rooms (175 square feet) lack a window. Location is everything!

This hotel is practically located at the center of everything you want to see in Beijing, located right in the Wangfujing Ave. Subway station is just two minutes away which connects to a web of attractions. The Forbidden City and the vicinity are all within walking distance. Wangfujing food and shopping area is just around the corner.
Now the not-so-good stuff: room is smaller than expected, bed is firm, but again all beds in China are practically the same. Rest room is reasonably clean but the carpet is stained and old. Did not use the hotel restaurant because there are too many selections just outside the hotel.

As the other high ratings suggest, this is a fine hotel and very well priced for what you get. We did not experience any issues with bugs (see another recent review). The rooms are large, the beds hard (I guess typical for China), and the location wonderful. The subway station is a short walk (< 10 minutes). Taxis are widely available, cheap, and the doorman can help you communicate with the drivers if you do not speak Cantonese.
The kitchen in the room exceeded our exception. Microwave, stove, dishes, water boiler, refrigerator, etc.
I agree with other reviewers that it's best to ask for a room on an upper floor and toward the back of the hotel. We stayed on the 15th floor and noise was not much of an issue. You can drown out the traffic below with the A/C fan.
Convenient shopping nearby - grocery stores, foreign language bookshops, malls, etc.

Hushed tranquility at a four-star central Beijing hotel Repeat guests consider this four-star property in central Beijing a good value. The 216-room hotel, opened in 2005, is small enough for the staff to provide personalized service. The 15-story tower is set back from the road, allowing a surprisingly tranquil stay in Beijing. The smartly decorated rooms create a refined and relaxing atmosphere. Guests can walk to the Forbidden City and Wangfujing Street within 15 minutes. For a light snack or evening drink, the richly upholstered chairs in the First Lounge bar beckon. The lounge hosts live performances of Chinese classical music and pop music on Thursday and Friday nights. Very nice hotel but expect to pay extra
-
Pleased in Beijing
- Mar 19, 2012
The hotel itself if very nice, very clean, comfortable and in a great location. However, one you arrive, the front desk staff will do ANYTHING to make you to pay extra for a room upgrade, even putting you in a different class of rooms for one night so that you pay for the upgrade. They also push their "club package" which includes breakfast and happy hour. The food is very good, so it was a good thing. But the staff will really work on getting you to pay extras when you arrive.

Great hotel, clean, spacious rooms very well appointed, and well located in the center of town. You can walk to the Forbidden City from here.
The hotel is slightly off the main road so very quiet. Staff was great, everyone more or less spoke English, and the restaurant was decent.

Great value
-
MBASpringVacation

The best parts of the hotel are its low price (high $80's per night for us), its location (next to easy-to-use subway which leads to significant city sites) and its general level of comfort (quiet and clean).
The main areas for improvement are concierge (seemingly unable to take initiative or creatively solve minor problems which is crucial with a language barrier; be prepared to give them exceptionally detailed instructions if you'd like them to do something basic) and finding a taxi (the hotel seems unable to "call" for one and you have to wait in line for one to arrive to drop someone off - the driveway is long so cabs don't swing by; we eventually just walked out to hail one, which was still challenging)

In Beijing, it is paramont that a hotel be near a metro line because of heavy traffic. This hotel is in a great location right outside of the Metro #2 Line. It is also easy to catch a taxi as it is near the center.
The amenities of the hotel are okay. It is bit of worn here and there. But given the rate I got, I'd say it was the best value anywhere in Beijing for a 4* hotel.
I would stay in this hotel again if the rate remains as attrative as it was.

Overall, the Hotel itself is a good accommodation for those who are in a budget and still wants to experience the Inter-continental Hotel Group service! Only a 10-minute walk to Taoranting Station going West and only a five-minute walk due East to Temple of Heaven!
The hotel's accommodation includes a breakfast buffet that caters to all its guest, be sure to fill up since everywhere you go, all sights require so much energy!
Definitely, this is the hotel worth staying!
P.S. Be sure to get your hotel's phone # saved in your cellphone!
My advise: Have your phone ready once you are in a cab, the most drivers don't speak English! Call the hotel and let the front desk agent speak with the driver for driving directions! Another plus for the hotel!
Cab fare is usually at RMB20-25 coming from Tiananmen/Wangfujing, if it goes beyond that range, expect to have a Beijing Tour!
Good night!

This Hotel advertises that it is close to the Temple of Heaven and probably is, but I still had to take taxi to to the main entrance of the Temple of Heaven. Other than that, it is a good choice for the money. The staff is very friendly and willing to help.

This is a "boutique" hotel in that number of rooms are not large and rooms themselves are quite small. Furniture is minimal but overall effect is really cozy and modern.
Location couldn't be better...both Tianamen Square and The Forbidden City are within walking distance - about 10 minutes away and there is a large shopping district also about 10 minutes away by foot where you can buy all the brands.
My only wish was that the restaurant featured more dishes, but there is a Days Cafe across the street that offers both China and Western Cuisine for a very reasonable cost.

This hotel was close to most of the big attractions in Beijing. It was nice to be able to walk everywhere or catch a bus close by. The hotel offers some inexpensive day tours, which was great! Aside from those things though, the reception desk was not very helpful and the hotel offers only basic amenities. If you are traveling on a budget it is good, but expect to figure things out on your own. I was not fond of the 200 Yaun deposit for the minibar as I was traveling with cash only and had a limited amount. If you only plan on being at your hotel to sleep, this is great choice, but if you are looking for someplace to relax and enjoy yourself, it is probably worth the extra cash to go to a nicer hotel.

Beware! Hotel Management are Crooks!
- Joel
- Jul 13, 2011
I waited a month to write this review, to cool down and consider my thoughts first.
I hope nobody else has been ripped off as I and my co-travelers were. If you stay at this hotel, you will find clean rooms and mediocre food. The location is very convenient. If it had stayed at that, I'd have been delighted.
However, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU EXCHANGE MONEY AT THIS HOTEL if you stay there. I and seven others were given counterfeit 100RMB notes when we exchanged dollars. When we discovered this, the hotel manager and his boss both blamed us.
We contacted the police, who did a brief investigation and agreed with us, and told the hotel to give us the proper cash. The hotel refused. The police then, to our dismay, did very little. We left the city later that day, so had no chance to follow up.
Worse still, Holiday Inn and the Intercontinental Hotels Group did nothing for us. Forget rectifying the hundreds of dollars of theft. They refused even to take action against that hotel or even to look into it, saying that what hotels do regarding currency exchange has nothing to do with them. This was said to me on the phone. I then wrote to the company online and via mail, and have not even received the courtesy of acknowledgement. Very interesting.
Personally, I will avoid all hotels that are part of IHG in the future just for this policy. But my main purpose here is to caution people against the Temple of Heaven hotel in particular, and if you do stay there, to use a legitimate bank to convert your currency, do not use the front desk at the hotel!

Jeanie Loretta-Venece
- Aug 22, 2008
The outside of the Hotel was beautiful during the night; however during the day was not so plesant. I could not believe how small the rooms were and I was placed in a room with twins beds. I was with my husband not my brother. We tried to order room services and was not able to get what was on the menu or No one could understand what I asked for. I could not get clean towels because the front desk did not understand. We could not get a taxi to the Olympic Media Center for several hours because once again, one one understood what we were asking. I was very disappointed with my Hotel stay and would not recommned The temple of Heaven to anyone.

The one good thing about this

The one good thing about this hotel is it's location which is in the heart of a traditional Chinese way of life. It made my stay a great experience.
If you are looking for luxury, comfort and 100% cleanliness this is not the hotel to book.
I enjoyed the experience if not the accommodation

I was very surprised the room and everything were in the best tradition of a good hotel anywhere in the west. I thourghly enjoyed my stay. If I ever travel to Beijing I would definately book this hotel again. everything I wanted to see was a very short taxi ride away and back.
