Description
Budget-friendly courtyard-style hotel near the Forbidden City The Days Inn Forbidden City Beijing has a proud history. The hotel was once the sprawling courtyard complex of a well-known warlord. Today the hotel's 160 rooms provide a peaceful rest stop for travelers weary from sightseeing at the nearby Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, or shopping on Wangfujing Street. Guests can park for free -- a rarity in Beijing. Highlights Convenient location near the Forbidden City and Tiananmen SquareFree parkingFree high-speed Internet Rooms The 160 modest-sized rooms stick to the basics: white linens, beige carpet and curtains. All rooms come with a workstation, mini-bar, safe, flat-screen television, and free high-speed Internet. The budget single rooms, in the basement, go for a cheaper rate than rooms on other floors. Features This hotel's location is its prime selling point. A ten-minute walk takes guests to several of Beijing's most famous landmarks, including the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and the National Theater. Shopping choices abound on nearby Wangfujing Street, and two convenient subway stations provide easy access to the rest of Beijing. The property's courtyard-style layout provides a welcome change from Beijing's many high-rise hotels. The hotel's restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A couple nights in Beijing

  • China on Foot
  • Apr 6, 2012
The strongest point of this hotel is that it is a 10 minute walk from the gates of Forbidden City. I don't think there are many other hotels this close. The staff are friendly and the restaurant is good with a mix of Asian and Western cuisine. Sometimes it seems the staff has little experience, i.e. they set the table but forget the utensils. Some of the staff speak very good English, so no worries there. From a Western viewpoint, the room was average and nothing to write home about. Maybe from a Chinese perspective it is better. Order the deluxe room; at least it will be above ground. Bring your own shaving stuff or you will have to buy what is in the room. The bed was fine. I would have preferred wireless internet. The hotel supplies a LAN cable and the wall jack works once you figure out which jack to use. The other jack is for something else but it isn't clearly marked. Overall, I'd gladly stay there again. No regrets

No problem whatsoever. Standard amenities for a Days Inn hotel. I partially chose the hotal for the location, but, though near the Forbidden City, other amenities such as shops are not particularly good here.

We had a great time at the Capitel Hotel Beijing. We ate at the place downstairs and it was pretty good, though a bit pricey compared to what else is available. The pool falicities were nice, though we spent most of our time out of hotel anyways, so we did not take advantage of most of the ammentieis.

Description
Hip boutique hotel near the Forbidden City Celebrated Chinese architect Pei Zhu designed the stylish Hotel Kapok, which was considered Beijing's first boutique hotel when it opened in 2006. Glass shimmers everywhere in this five-story building, from the faceted glass façade (which resembles a lantern at night) to the glass wall that encloses each bathroom. Guests can explore the more traditional side of Beijing with ease. A ten-minute walk leads guests to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, as well as the countless shops and night market along Wangfujing Street. Highlights Hip boutique hotel10-minute walk to Forbidden CityEye-catching Book BarCourtyard rooms with private gardensFree Wi-Fi access Rooms Hotel Kapok does not offer "standard" rooms. The hotel has "fashion rooms" instead, in keeping with its high trend factor. The 89 rooms lean toward the minimalist side, with streamlined modern furniture and lots of glass. All rooms have a flat-screen television, mini-bar, and free high-speed Internet access. Fashion rooms measure in at 355 square feet. Larger courtyard rooms (538 square feet) enjoy their own little private gardens. Suites range in size from 645 to 1,076 square feet. Kapok suites include indulgent oversized soak tubs. Features Eye-catching design elements pop from every corner of this boutique hotel. Intricate white latticework weaves throughout the Xiangjianba restaurant, which serves Chinese and Western fare. Tall bamboo plants add a greenhouse feel to the glass lobby. Bookshelves and sling-back chairs stagger along the staircase in the Book Bar. Good location and decent price. We actually stayed here twice on our trip. The first room smelled like smoke in a non smoking room. The second room was fine. The beds were a bit hard but that is China. It was soft enough but it wasn't a US mattress. Overall I would stay here again.

The location was between the night market and Forbidden City. Both were short walks away. The hotel staff, especially the bellmen were polite and helpful and spoke engish very well. I took a tour to the Great wall one day and walked to the Forbidden city the other. Both were worthwhile experiences.

Location is everything!

  • MIKE
  • Jun 1, 2011
This hotel is practically located at the center of everything you want to see in Beijing, located right in the Wangfujing Ave. Subway station is just two minutes away which connects to a web of attractions. The Forbidden City and the vicinity are all within walking distance. Wangfujing food and shopping area is just around the corner. Now the not-so-good stuff: room is smaller than expected, bed is firm, but again all beds in China are practically the same. Rest room is reasonably clean but the carpet is stained and old. Did not use the hotel restaurant because there are too many selections just outside the hotel.

As the other high ratings suggest, this is a fine hotel and very well priced for what you get. We did not experience any issues with bugs (see another recent review). The rooms are large, the beds hard (I guess typical for China), and the location wonderful. The subway station is a short walk (< 10 minutes). Taxis are widely available, cheap, and the doorman can help you communicate with the drivers if you do not speak Cantonese. The kitchen in the room exceeded our exception. Microwave, stove, dishes, water boiler, refrigerator, etc. I agree with other reviewers that it's best to ask for a room on an upper floor and toward the back of the hotel. We stayed on the 15th floor and noise was not much of an issue. You can drown out the traffic below with the A/C fan. Convenient shopping nearby - grocery stores, foreign language bookshops, malls, etc.

Hushed tranquility at a four-star central Beijing hotel Repeat guests consider this four-star property in central Beijing a good value. The 216-room hotel, opened in 2005, is small enough for the staff to provide personalized service. The 15-story tower is set back from the road, allowing a surprisingly tranquil stay in Beijing. The smartly decorated rooms create a refined and relaxing atmosphere. Guests can walk to the Forbidden City and Wangfujing Street within 15 minutes. The Dengshikou subway station on line 5 is less than a block away. Highlights Personalized serviceStylish, comfortable roomsLocation set back from the road makes for a more tranquil stayCentral location within 15-minute walk of Wangfujing Street and the Forbidden City Rooms The smartly decorated rooms make a great first impression. Muted earth tones, streamlined contemporary furniture, and eye-catching fabrics combine to create a refined and tranquil atmosphere. All rooms have city or park views and come with a safe, desk, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, and free high-speed Internet. Features Bloo Dining serves a fusion of western and Asian dishes. The sleek interior gleams with glass: crystal chandeliers, ornate red bowls, and racks of green champagne bottles. At Oodle, guests eat in or take out oodles of Asian noodles. For a light snack or evening drink, the richly upholstered chairs in the First Lounge bar beckon. The lounge hosts live performances of Chinese classical music and pop music on Thursday and Friday nights.   A beauty parlor and a massage center offer treatments such as facials and aromatherapy massages. Very nice hotel but expect to pay extra

  • Pleased in Beijing
  • Mar 19, 2012
The hotel itself if very nice, very clean, comfortable and in a great location. However, one you arrive, the front desk staff will do ANYTHING to make you to pay extra for a room upgrade, even putting you in a different class of rooms for one night so that you pay for the upgrade. They also push their "club package" which includes breakfast and happy hour. The food is very good, so it was a good thing. But the staff will really work on getting you to pay extras when you arrive.

Great hotel, clean, spacious rooms very well appointed, and well located in the center of town. You can walk to the Forbidden City from here. The hotel is slightly off the main road so very quiet. Staff was great, everyone more or less spoke English, and the restaurant was decent.

The best parts of the hotel are its low price (high $80's per night for us), its location (next to easy-to-use subway which leads to significant city sites) and its general level of comfort (quiet and clean). The main areas for improvement are concierge (seemingly unable to take initiative or creatively solve minor problems which is crucial with a language barrier; be prepared to give them exceptionally detailed instructions if you'd like them to do something basic) and finding a taxi (the hotel seems unable to "call" for one and you have to wait in line for one to arrive to drop someone off - the driveway is long so cabs don't swing by; we eventually just walked out to hail one, which was still challenging)

Great Location!

  • NYCBob
  • Jan 12, 2012
In Beijing, it is paramont that a hotel be near a metro line because of heavy traffic. This hotel is in a great location right outside of the Metro #2 Line. It is also easy to catch a taxi as it is near the center. The amenities of the hotel are okay. It is bit of worn here and there. But given the rate I got, I'd say it was the best value anywhere in Beijing for a 4* hotel. I would stay in this hotel again if the rate remains as attrative as it was.

This is a "boutique" hotel in that number of rooms are not large and rooms themselves are quite small. Furniture is minimal but overall effect is really cozy and modern. Location couldn't be better...both Tianamen Square and The Forbidden City are within walking distance - about 10 minutes away and there is a large shopping district also about 10 minutes away by foot where you can buy all the brands. My only wish was that the restaurant featured more dishes, but there is a Days Cafe across the street that offers both China and Western Cuisine for a very reasonable cost.

Nice hotel, would stay again

  • Anon
  • Mar 27, 2011
Clean, great location. English-speaking ability was more limited than I expected, but not enough to be a major barrier (be sure to come equipped with necessary paperwork - written English was proficient). Hotel restaurant food was VERY expensive and concierge is not extremely helpful in finding other restaurants...be prepared to explore unless you don't mind the expense. Business center is also expensive to use (pay for internet and pay over $1 USD per page printed). Also, the comfort of the beds would present a major drawback for someone with back problems.

I'd had read the comments of others

  • Ian
  • Mar 29, 2010
I'd had read the comments of others before using this hotel, but they weren't too complementary. Reception staff bad english, phone calls in the middle of the night - 'you want massage', and smelly toilet... HOWEVER, - maybe I had pretty low expectations, - but I actually thought it was reasonably good considering how cheap it was and it's location. The fact that they were rennovating on my floor didn't impress me, but bad english didn't worry me, I pulled the phone cord on the 3rd night and just enjoyed my time in Beijing. If you were planning on spending significant time in the hotel, - look elsewhere, - but if you are just using it as a base to explore from, - it's great!

VERY NICE

  • Doc Sarah
  • Aug 10, 2011
We stayed in 2 other hotels while in China, and this one was by far the nicest as far as the quality of the rooms. The rooms were very nice, beautifully decorated, and comfortable. The only downside to this hotel is that there is not a close-by subway station, you have to walk quite a few blocks to get to the nearest station. HOwever, it is on Wangfujing street which is a great street for walking and shopping.

My brother and I stayed here for a week. The staff was amazing! Very helpful, friendly, and English-speaking (big plus for those of us that do not know Mandarin). The location, in the middle of a hutong, really helps you get to know the city. The hotel is also fairly close to a metro stop.

Bien situé au plan géographique, mais ignoré des chauffeurs de taxi, les retours le soir sont parfois difficiles.Sinon très bon accueil dans un lieu intimiste, particulièrement typique, agréable à vivre et très bien entretenu.

Our room was very comfortable and immaculately maintained, with frequent housekeeping and turndown serivce. We used the concierge to arrange airport pickup and also a day trip to the Great Wall. Both were first class and comfortable. We also ate dinner in the two main restaurants and had terrific meals. The location is central Beijing and a great base for exploring the city.

Room was basic but was fine and decent. Didn't have any problem with cleanliness and hot water. They are doing complete renovation on second floor so it was a bit noisy and dusty during the day. But the evening and night went fine. Good location and easy walk to the metro and shopping area.

Good Value but room for improvement

  • VictorZ
  • Oct 31, 2011
Hotel New Otani Chang Fu Gong is one of the original 5-star hotels in Beijing. The official check-in time is 2pm but we got to the hotel early at around 10am and we got our room after 30 minutes of waiting for the room to be cleaned. The staff was courteous. The lobby and amenities still seemed to be adequate to be a 5-star hotel, however our room especially the bathroom was more of 3.5-star.

Reasonable place

  • Million miles traveller
  • Nov 4, 2010
Located at near the financial center of Beijing, this hotel is mainly for business travellers. Price is reasonable and the service is good, however the building itself is a little old. Restaurants offers good foods and they are not too expensive. Compared to the same New Otani Hotel at San Francisco and the one in Tokyo, this one marks a little below in overall ranking but meets my expectation. I've stayed at other very expensive ($300+) hotels at Beijing for business trips, but this one fits my personal budget. Unless you want to look at impressive building and interior architecture, this one is good enough for all pruposes. It is neither a Marriott at Manhattan, nor Fairmont at San Francisco, but comparable to most chains in the U.S.
