Launched in 1923 as the Chicago Air Park, today’s Chicago Midway Airport is the second-largest airport in the state of Illinois, eclipsed only by Chicago O’Hare. When you fly into Midway, you’ll find yourself in the southwest section of the city, just eight miles from the bustling Chicago Loop. Chicago Midway Airport is bordered by the Garfield Ridge neighborhood on the north and the Clearing neighborhood on the south, and it is just a short drive from the Archer Heights, West Elsdon, and West Lawn neighborhoods.
The airport is home to fifteen newsstands and retail stores, including George’s Music Room and House of Blues, as well as 25 eateries that range from traditional fast food to local cuisine at restaurants like Manny’s, Harry Caray’s, and Illinois Bar and Grill. Although Midway has no on-site hotels, you’ll find a diverse selection in the Clearing neighborhood along West 65th Street and South Cicero Avenue. Once you venture outside the airport, be sure to stop at Pticek & Son to get some of the authentic kolackys it has been serving to locals for more than 40 years, and then pop over to Joe & Frank’s Market for some handmade sausage. Take a day trip into downtown Chicago, where you can do some shopping on the Magnificent Mile, view the city from the skydeck at Willis Tower, or have some fun down at the Navy Pier.
