Vancouver Empire Landmark Hotel
Our Basic info: Family of 4, stayed in Nov 2012, somewhat off-season, I believe. Just here to hang out in Vancouver for a couple of days.
Why Stay Here?
The view, good location.
The Good:
The view from the upper floors is great! We stayed on the 35th floor, gorgeous view of the water and the city.
Good location, a few blocks from the pier, plenty of food and shops within walking distance on Robson.
Our room was very spacious, 2 beds, a little tv/sitting room, small sink/kitchenette with a fridge and a decent sized closet.
Some may not consider this a positive, but the alarm clock in our room was straight out of 1982, big buttons, full of win…
Delicious restaurant on the top floor, rotating style where you get a full rotation every 80 minutes. The restaurant is fine dining and is priced accordingly high. I saw a limited-time deal where if you eat a meal in the restaurant, you could get a cheaper room rate. That may be worthwhile, but we had booked and paid in advance, so I didn't pursue it. Maybe good to remember if you plan on eating there anyway and you're looking for a place to stay.
The front desk and housekeeping personnel were VERY helpful to us, though, when we forgot an item after checking out. We drove back, and I spoke with the front desk and they were very quick to help us out. Found our item and sped us on our way within 10 minutes or so. Very positive experience.
Nice RFID room keys, elevators only ascend to guest floors if you have a room key and swipe it, nice security feature.
The Bad:
Some adjectives that come to mind to describe the room itself: drab, old, 70's, out of date.
Small elevators.
Parking garage elevator is somewhat complicated if you have a stroller or rolling luggage - not all entrances to the central elevator area are stroller accessible, so either you have to carry the stroller up a few stairs, or find another way. Not a huge problem, and likely typical of hotels in the area.
The service was mixed. Checking into the hotel, I walked in and had trouble even finding an individual to assist me. The reception desk is hiding behind a wall separating the main lobby from the reception desk. Funny thing is there were NO employees anywhere except for that hidden reception desk… it was a bit disconcerting at first, but again, we came in the "off season," which may explain that.
The Ugly: Why Avoid This place?
Everything was pretty good overall, can't think of anything that would keep us away. For the price, we found it to be a pleasant place to stay. The beds were not very comfortable, and the room didn't give us a modern/clean feeling, if that's a priority to you, but it was ok overall.
The Bed:
Stiff, hard springs, older, not very comfortable.
The Bathroom:
Medium sized. Not enough space for 2, but the kitchenette area made it ok for getting ready in the mornings and such.
The View:
Awesome. Higher floors have a great view of the area.
Good for Family? (We travel now with 2 adults and 2 kids under 6)
Spacious room, which was nice. No problems for family here.
Modern Electronics?
Plenty of exposed electric outlets to charge our gadgets, although they weren't placed in overly convenient places. Not great, but not bad. Flat-panel TV from 2001 or so, and an alarm clock from the 70's or 80's. Interesting juxtaposition, we only used the TV to entertain the kids some. It is placed rather distant from the beds, so not great for laying down and watching a show, if you were inclined to do that… although there's so much more to do in Vancouver, I don't imagine this is a big issue.

If you're looking for a hotel with character and personality - but also clean and in a great location - this is the hotel. This is not your boring chain hotel - instead it has a real feel to it (hip, 50's-ish) that's fun to experience. Rooms are on the smaller size but comfortable - and amenities are good with a 42-inch HD TV on the wall, coffee maker, etc. Love the signage around the place.

We found the location to be great. We were worried about being across from the emergency room at St. Paul's but the room was very comfortable and quieter than we thought. All the hotel needed was a hot tub in the court yard.

No Bar! Otherwise nice.
-

- Oct 15, 2012
We found out when we arrived that the bar was closed for renovations, leaving the hotel experience a little flat - I had heard good things about the bar and it's music in our guidebook. We were not informed of this closure when booking.
Hotel room was nice - big flatscreen tv.
For some unknown reason, we couldn't choose to book a Kingsize bed or 2 Queensize beds on the website - of course this invariably meant that when we got to the hotel, our room had the wrong option (2 Queens) - sort it out ebooks!
Luckily, due to a cancellation, the extremely friendly staff found a suitable room an hour later for us, no extra charge.
Taxi rank outside was a bonus.
Plenty of restaurants nearby, and on a street with lots of nearby clothes shops.
Free Wifi, worked in the hotel room.

The Sandman Suites were the perfect choice for our trip to Vancouver! The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of downtown and is within walking distance to everything from great restaurants to the sky train. While we enjoyed the local grub, we were also able to save a little by shopping at the market down the street and cooking meals in our fully stocked kitchen. Having an in suite washing machine was also super helpful for our long stay. For the price, I'd recommend the Sandman Suites to anyone in a heart beat.

Great hotel; Better service

We just spent the weekend at L'Hermitage and could not have been happier with the level of service and quality.
Literally from the moment we pulled up to the hotel, until the moment we checked out the service was top notch, and every member of the hotel staff we encountered made us feel welcome.
Great location in proximity to Yaletown and Gas Town.

Nice botique hotel
-
Chicago world travelers
- Oct 30, 2011
The staff was exceptional. The concierge, Nathalie, was the best! She really helped with organizing our week long trip, took care of dinner reservations, etc. The hotel restaurant named Diva was a pleasant surprise for both breakfast and a late dinner. The room was clean and well maintained. The only two negative comments were that the soft goods in the room, bath sheets, towels, bath mat, etc, were a bit worn and frayed. Second, the televsion system/tv were out of date and had limited selections. Overall, great location, exceptional staff, and well worth the price on Orbitz.

Nettes Personal, etwas laut aber zentral gelegen
-
Reisefutzi
- Oct 13, 2012

This hotel is very centrally located. Sightseeing bus stops right outside the front door. Staff was extremely helpful. Food/service in the hotel dining room was very good. Enjoyed the pool and steam room. Only areas that needed improvement were the uncomfortable beds and the street noise-even on the 23rd floor. Would definitely stay again because of the other pluses..

We received an upgrade to a much bigger room/suite which was wonderful. Lobby, bar, restaurant very nice and high end. The room itself though seemed to need a makeover. They had made an attempt to do some updating, but wasn't done well-the spaciousness and cleanliness were excellent though. The hotel is right in the middle of everything which made it very easy. They also helped us rent a car for the day which was very helpful. We enjoyed our stay and loved Vancouver!

nice hotel, great location, wonderful pool and terrace

The hotel is situated just a short walk from the Waterfront, so it's very easy to walk everywhere across downtown from it. It is situated in an office building so the lobby is not vast and there isn't a bar or a breakfast room with people hanging there as you would find in other hotels. The rooms are clean, good size and comfortbale and so are the bathrooms. The real plus of the hotel is that it is very quiet and gives you access to a fitness center with a good gym and a very large pool with a wonderful view and terrace over Vancouver waterfront and northern shore; the fitness center also has a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Unfortunately it is not cheap, but nothing is so in Vancouver so the ratio quality-price is reasonable

Pros
Very friendly/helpful staff
THE GYM!!!!!
The extra sink/counter space/fridge/microwave in the room was handy.
Great views
Excellent location
Minor Cons
There is something slightly odd about residents sharing the building with a hotel.
Rooms were a bit generic (but well kept and clean)
Elevators were quirky
If you're looking to explore Vancouver then you should choose this hotel on location alone. Why would you want to be landlocked in the middle of the city when you can be close to the water and the spectacular mountain views.
Excellent gym with amazing views of the water/mountains. Definitely one of the best hotel gyms I've ever been to.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay. There is something quite old fashioned about the way the hotel operates, but in a very positive way. I think it had to do with the staff. They seem to have a higher level of professionalism/respect to their customers then most big chain hotels. It was refreshing experience.

This hotel is very a very nice place to stay in Vancouver on a budget. There's nothing spectacular about the place but if you're looking for a clean place to stay downtown Vancouver, this is it. The parking is about $18 extra per night, which is reasonable since Vancouver has pretty expensive parking anyway. The room was clean. NOTE: we were staying in the Courtyard, that is in a separate building behind the hotel, but is a little cheaper.

Great budget hotel

The staff was excellent; Manuel in particular was most helpful. The hotel shows its age in ways but is very well-kept. The suites are of good size and comfortable. The location is excellent, with Stanley Park a half-dozen blocks west and all of downtown within easy walking distance. There is street noise starting with local business hours during the day, but it's very quiet at night. If you're looking for a decent hotel on a budget, look no further. I would be happy to stay there again.

We were looking for a relative inexpensive hotel for a family on a budget. The Greenbriar meet those needs, but it is not the hotel for people looking for pampering. The major drawback to the hotel is the lack of air conditioning. We were in Vancouver during a hot spell and you had to have the windows open or roast. Unfortunately Robson street is pretty noisy until after midnight. The Greenbriar also does not have an elevator, so you have to lug your luggage up a couple of flights of stairs. The suite served very well for three (two adults and a child) and we cooked many of our meals. The full-size refrigerator was very handy and there are grocery stores a couple blocks away on Robson St. However, the provided dishes were rudimentary so it was fortunate that we had brought some with us. We had a car with us and paid the extra $20 per day for parking. There is no street parking in the neighborhood and the local public garage closed at night, so plan on paying for parking if you have a car. In summary- if you have ear plugs and you're looking for a relatively inexpensive apartment-like acommodations then the Greenbriar is for you. If you're traveling with someone who is disabled or are looking for a full-service modern hotel, the Greenbriar is not the place for you.
