Early High Season Stay

  • GGDVT
  • May 9, 2012
Pros - checked us in early and, although we did not request it, upgraded our room without charge; the room was absolutely lovely. We called in advance and requested a refrigerator; the first one did not work, but it was quickly replaced. Beach is really spectacular, pool is lovely. Public transportation is great, but you have to ask the bus drivers to call out your stop; they are not marked nor is there any indicator panel in the bus. I would not recommend renting a scooter; the streets are incredibly narrow and everyone drives very fast. We found the hotel staff to be incredibly friendly and helpful in everyway; in fact everyone we met in Bermuda was friendly. Customs was a breeze in and out - nothing like some of the Carribean islands we've visited. Cons - we knew from our research that the hotel restaurant prices were VERY high; the only reasonably priced meal is lunch on the beach. We packed canned tuna, dried soups, instant oatmeal, etc, We also took a cab from the airport, stopped at a grocery store and stocked up on fresh breakfast and lunch staples. If you do this make sure you request the refrigerator in advance. Drinks are also very expensive so remember tourists may each bring in one bottle of liquor and one bottle of wine/champagne without charge - make sure you bubble wrap to avoid breakage. We had cocktails and appetizers of our own making each evening on the balcony before heading out for dinner. Meals - Henry VIII is a bit pricy, but worth the walk - yes, you can walk from the hotel...door man have a tendency to recommend taxis. Lots of inexpensive, but good restaurants on Front Street in Hamilton. Shopping - you can bring $400 worth of purchases home without incurring custom's tax. Hamilton has some nice shops, but be warned everything is expensive even when it's on sale. Other - you are charged for internet on a daily basis at the hotel and don't forget tipping is not necessary anywhere on the island as everything has a 17% service surcharge, but if you experience exceptional service a small tip is always welcomed. Bottom line - we plan to return to the Fairmont Southhampton at the beginning of the off season in September to enjoy ourselves all over again.

Long weekend at Fairmont Southampton - just what we needed

This was out third trip to the Fairmont Southampton in as many years; and I'm pleased to say we've found something new each time we visit. Upon arrival we stopped in at the Jasmine Lounge for a light lunch in the outdoor area overlooking the pool. The service was a tad on the slow side but sitting there with the mid day sun shining down and the soft breeze coming off the Atlantic more than made up for any delays. Our "Harbour View" room looked out towards the north with views of Great Sound across towards the Dockyard attractions. Since our visit last spring it appears some rooms have been upgraded from smaller tube TVs to a massive 46" flat screen. The King sized bed was very comfortable. My biggest recommendation from this visit was the Sunday Brunch at The Waterlot. This is an absolute must-do and will probably turn out to be the least expensive meal you will find on the hotel grounds.

Excellent, great service and amazing private beach

The staff here really go out of their way to make you feel at home. If you go on Saturday night, they have the best band on the island, it was amazing. The view of the sunset is unparalleled and the beach is beautiful. Food is better than all other places on the island.

Great for Couples

The Reefs is one of the last of the independently owned resorts. It is set on a stunning cliff with breathtaking views of the Atlantic ocean. We were treated to a 'Rum Swizzle' upon our arrival to this first class hotel, helping us get in the island mood. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful and made checking in a breeze.I would definitely recommend taking advantage of the Beeline transportation from the airport to the hotel. [...]We had a nice time chatting with other couples who shared our minivan ride. The Reefs has a stunning beach. The staff do an exceptional job grooming the sand and carefully placing the beach umbrellas and the chaises. Be warned that there were two people who were stung by Portuguese Man O'wars while snorkelling off the beach at the Reefs! These jelly fish are hard to spot when you are swimming. The sting is apparently very painful. Both people who were stung had to be rushed to the hospital in the capital, Hamilton. My wife and I rented a scooter while we were at the Reefs. The hotel can arrange it for you. It was such freedom to be able to ride from one end of the island to the other! In my experience, it took about an hour to get used to driving on the left hand side of the road. We checked out the dockyards where the cruise ships come in, and then drove to the quaint town of St. George's on the other end of the island. All told we put on about 130 km on the scooter. This was quite a feat for such a small island. Most people who were at the Reefs were visiting for the second, third or more times. This shows that people love this resort. My feeling is that this place is perfect for couples who want a romantic and first class holiday.
