Great apartment style hotel

- Jun 16, 2011
Spent 5 nights here when visiting sydney. We had a 1 bedroom apartment style room on the top floor. Apt was newly renovated, with new clean full kitch and bath. room also had a small porch, and free inroom laundry. We really liked the room becasue it was like having an apartment in sydney, was not hotel-like at all except for the front desk. it was in a GREAT location, close to food shopping and all the tourist attractions. Darling Harbor was only a 5 min walk and also close to chinatown and paddys market. We planned on cooking alot, but since there were so many great places to eat we only cooked a bit. I would stay here again based on location, cleanliness and price. would highy reccomend.

Conveniently located in downtown Sydney, close to trains, buses and Chinatown. Beautiful old building with nicely conserved Art Deco interior. Amazingly quiet considering its location, with good natural light. Our room was small but had everything. Our only complaint was the charges for extras like internet and phone calls.

The Great Southern Hotel had a great location for those that are looking to get around the city as well as its suburbs (close to central station). The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. The down sides to this hotel was the access to internet (there was no WiFi, only wired connections to pay for in your room) and they charge you for bag storage $2. Regarding WiFi, there are a couple of ways to get on to the internet, there is a restaurant attached to the hotel, if you purchase something they will give 30 min and some other options around the city. The bathroom also only had a bottle of shampoo/conditioner combo and bath and body soap. Not a big deal but if you need anything else, there were plenty of convenience stores in the area. Another good thing was they offered self-laundry.

We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, with no pressure. The room was quiet except for street noise, possibly because one of the double windows wasn't completely closed but screwed shut. Very easy to get around from the location. But notice the change of name of the hotel from Marque. Luckily our taxi driver found it fine. Also enjoyed the free shuttle the city provides.

We were very pleased with this hotel. It's a very short walk to Darling Harbour, passing all sorts of lovely fountians and small park areas. It is also just around the corner from China Town. It's a very busy area at night, but the lobby and hotel were basically quiet. Free wifi was available in the lobby. We found it easy to get just about everywhere by bus, train and walking. The room was well lit, very clean and comfortable. The staff was superb. We were helped with directions, asked if we'd found everything OK afterwards, etc. Tara at the front desk was particularly friendly and helpful. A great stay!

I stayed in the standard studio with one queen bed. The room was very clean, and very spacious - so was the bathroom. Lots of space. Large balcony. Very comfortable and clean bed. I used the television which was great. The location is amazing, considering the hotel is so close to everything, but also very quiet. I didn't hear a thing all night. I would stay there again.

The hotel is near Central Railway

- Feb 27, 2011
The hotel is near Central Railway Station and therefore an easy transfer from the airport. The hotel reception and entrance is rather small and not very inviting. The staff are very welcoming, pleasant and helpful. The room we stayed in for 9 days was very clean and of a reasonable size. There was a communal kitchen adjacent to our room which we found very useful. There is a slight inconvenience in that we had to share the bathroom facilities but we adjusted to this very easily. The hotel is very new and quiet although on the main road.
Its location is very central for getting to the centre of the city including the harbour, most places are within walking distance. i would recommend this hotel and would certainly return to it. I would like to thank the staff for the service they gave us during our stay.

The housekeeper was very nice.
But reception service was unfavorable.
After we checked out.
We need taxi and was emergency to airport..
We asked they can you help us to call a taxi.
They even said anything.
Just told us go out to find a taxi on the street...
I asked they twice .

I was looking for a low cost hotel in Sydney, and came to the conclusion that such doesn't really exist. Unless you want to do one of the backpacker hotels of course. Correct me if I'm wrong though =) The Metro Hotel Sydney Central is nicely located, only about a 10 mins walk from central station where the airport shuttle stops. The hotel is located in Chinatown (or at least it seems so), and darling harbour, and the shopping areas are close by. The town hall train stop is about 10 mins away from where you can reach all Sydney by train. I haven't tried the bus system, maybe there is something even closer. The room had standard equipment. Everything was clean and I had no interference with the service staff. When I arrived they tried to charge me extra for the wireless, but since I booked this hotel specifically with internet access, they did not charge me, and gave me internet. Very nice of them.

The photo's on the site don't really paint an accurate picture. My room had a massive vomit stain. It smelt. little or no natural light. stains on my bed sheets. The toilet paper hurt. The lifts are nearly impossible to catch because the place is so crowded. Expect to be working 6-10 flights of stairs every time you come and go. The hotel is located right in the city easy to walk to most places from there. But the rooms ARE small, no space for 2 normal bags ( and ours were rather small), not even a space to put your clothes .. a hook or 2 on the wall would help, bedding is average and my husband had to sleep on the floor. I asked to be upgraded to a somewhat larger room ( which was done willingly) but I had to pay an extra 20$ so that we could both sleep in bed! all in all a pricey hotel for the comfort it provides. The staff are helpful and willing to help.

tThe hotel is in a good spot and the staff were Ok too. The room was clean and in good order. The airconditioning control was designed by an incompetent imbecile. The reason our room, which had the afternoon sun on it, was hot, was explained carefully to us by the young woman from Reception: The thermocouple that measures the temperature and determines the unit's output is in the hall. The hall gets hot 3 to 4 hours after our room. So in the menatime we cook. Then in the middle of the night, when our room is cold, the hall is still hot and the room is being refrigated. I'm sure this is a lot cheaper than having individual controls that would actually work, like other hotels.

Location surrounding was great, however taxi's and pick up/drop off point was aweful and kaotic! they never had a parking spot, so we always had to always walk distances to and from taxi's.
Friendly and helpfull staff, depending who is rostered on.
Room was clean with all that was promised.
We stayed on the 8th floor, and to my suprise, we could not hear the noise from the monorail.
The pool and the gym was a bit of a dissapointment though.
Overall i would rate it a 3 star, not 4 as advertised.
