Good stuff

Overall pretty good stuff! Started off with the challenge of the hotel not being able to find my reservation and having to wait around for an hour before they put me in a room. Next morning was reminded early that they were not expecting me, but it quickly resolved. The headache subsided when I saw the view. We had a great view and I will never forget it. The service was pretty good too. Room comfort was good although there were some minor opportunities/repairs that were needed. The reason I gave it 4 stars was the great view. Value/amenities were hard to gauge. Spent most of the time away from the hotel. Red hook is great and spent a lot of time across the island at a different resort for a wedding. While at the hotel, didn't seem anything I could boast about. Overall, I could see going back.

Nightlife tip: Short drive from hotel

The island closes down around midnight so if you're out/about plan ahead. Also, make sure to have plenty of cash on hand for taxis. Taxi service don't charge rates; instead, they charge by the person depending on where you're going.

Do not stay here!

I understand the hotel is undergoing a renovation but, my husband and I are staying in a deserted building. I have not seen another person in this building all week. The light on our balcony does not work. The exit near our room has been boarded up as well as the only elevator in the whole building. We have to walk though the entire building to get out. The construction starts promptly at 8am. The bathtub is dirty and the tiles as well as the shower heads had mold. The carpets are torn and there are never enough towels when housekeeping "cleans" the room. It either takes hours to get replacement towels or you get some excuse about the dryer didn't dry them in time. There are only two restaurants opened and the food when they aren't sold out is mediocre at best. Thankfully I did not pay for the all inclusive food! I called the hotel prior to coming down inquiring about upgrading to an all inclusive package and the woman that answer the phone was rude and uninterested in helping me. I was put on hold for approximately 15 minutes only to be told there was nobody available to help me. Some of the staff has been very friendly but most of the staff could not be bothered to say hello. The one redeeming part of this place are the on property cats! They are friendly and cute!! I don't normally slam a place this hard but the amount of $$ I paid to stay here is not worth the aggravation and inconvenience. This remodel is poorly executed and unfortunately the guests suffer.

Do Not Stay Here!

Terrible service and what an old dump. It started at check in which took over 30 minutes once we got to the counter. Get this, the desk clerk disappeared with my driver's license and credit card for over 10 minutes with no explanation. Upon her return, I asked her if there was a problem with my ID or card and she replied no. When I pressed her as to why she left with my items for over 10 minutes she replied that she was in the bathroom. Seriously? I was more than concerned and she assured me she left my items on her desk and did not take them into the restroom. Unacceptable, period. She then handed us our room key and walked away. No directions or anything and our room was three buildings away. We had to find someone on our own to ask directions. We lugged our luggage up to our room and our keys did not work. We had to huff our luggage uphill back to the lobby to get new keys with no apology or concern at all. The elevator had dirty chipped tile and the whole floor we were on was under construction and extremely dirty. Finally in our room, we were surprised that it looked newly renovated although the tub fixtures were old. The layout and view were decent but our feet got dirty immediately upon walking around. We unpacked and decided to grab a bite at the Mangrove which appeared to be the only/main restaurant. The service was rude and the menu was more than lacking, we ended up walking out, driving into town and had Domino's pizza. Welcome to St. Thomas, right? The following day we went down to the beach/pool area. The pools were nice and well laid out but the beach is very small and rocky, don't plan on spending much time in the ocean here. We sat down with two other couples at the pool bar for a cool one, guess what...no one manning the pool bar, no service and no drinks (for our entire 8 day stay). Thank goodness we had a car so we didn't have to spend much time at this dump. Day three, hurricane Ganzola is supposed to scrape the islands on its way to Bermuda. On our way to the store for supplies, we stopped in the lobby to see if they had any information on the hurricane or a hurricane protocol. They actually laughed at us. Yes, laughed. Well excuse me, we don't have hurricanes in Wisconsin. Thank goodness we were in contact with our minister who provided the support we needed. Oh, by the way, this was my wedding and honeymoon. 5 days to go, but I will spare you the rest. We had a great time thanks to our rental car and not spending time at The Sugar Bay Resort. Spend your money elsewhere even though Dreams plans on attaching its name to this hole. You can do much better! One last thing, we had two swimsuits and a shirt ruined when we hung them on the shower rod to dry and they ended up full of rust stains.

This Resort is Going Downhill

This is my third time staying at Sugar Bay and, unfortunately, this facility has been going significantly downhill with their new ownership/management. My room was dirty, especially the tub. The water that comes out of the faucet is brown at first and you definitely don't want to drink it. The staff is nice, although none of them seem to be able to answer basic questions about your reservations. Unfortunately, I'm done staying at Sugar Bay.

Destination wedding

The hotel was nice. The staff and the islanders are very friendly. One thing is the hotel is under renovations so there is only one restaurant open at the resort. Not a lot of eating options if you wanted to eat at the resort. The private beach was wonderful, there's just a lot of rocks in the sand and the beginning of the water. Also be aware there are a lot of steps to walk throughout the resort so pace yourself if you're somewhat out of shape. There are random strat cats on the resort that are supposedly neutered, they don't bother you though. And iguanas and geckos they on the resort as well. The rooms are nice and neat, the ones that are being renovated are brighter than the old ones. If you have to go somewhere the staff will call you a taxi which is usually about $10 per person if you want to go into town.

It's went down hill the last 4 months

It was ok but nothing worked.. Ice machine, key cards and air conditioning for example. The hotel is perfect location to all the best beaches. We were wrongfully charged from the spa, they did return it but it was a hassle.

Disappointed

Upon our arrival, the air was not working and the staff would not provide any details as to when the air would be fixed. Luckily it came on later that evening. The room was decent. The door to our room was not working. We had to literally slam the door to get it to close properly. Iron didn't work. Service was very slow. Overall, if you're looking for a value hotel, I would recommend SB. However if you enjoy a resort setting, I would spend the extra dollars and stay elsewhere.

Medium ...

I've stayed at Sugar Bay before and it has always been a nice/average place. The last trip I took was unfortunately a pretty negative experience. Our rooms weren't ready until 9:00pm, so they suggested that we wait around and just check in randomly throughout the day to find out if our rooms were ready (they were renovating the rooms apparently#. When they finally were, most of them didn't have water that worked until our second night there. The water that was coming out of the faucet tasted weird and was a bit dirty looking. The staff seemed stressed out and confused. Thank god this was a work trip. If it was for pleasure #or god forbid a wedding) it would have been a colossal disappointment and I would have been extremely angry. The pool was nice though, and the bartenders at the pool were nice too. I don't have the same compliments for anything else though. They didn't even offer a discount on this massive flop of a hotel experience. The receptionist offered to get us one drink though...that was ... nice... I'm sure it will be a nice/average place again soon. If you're looking for a relatively cheap and easy place, this will do fine.

if u can get pass

The staff and guests are super wonderful. The hotel left a lot to b desired. Our first room was awful... stopped up sink, broken toilet, flooded next room, furniture in thehall, and construction going on that woke us up at 8 am. Our second room was a little better. No hot water though. The food is ok. If you make it to the sports bar or dinner in the main lounge... but the friendliness and the awesome views helps ease you past some of your disdane. Management lacks that same sense of hospitality. Not very accessible for wheelchairs and its a lot of walking but gulf carts are available to shuttle u and were prompt.
