Loved it!! Don't listen to all the negative reviews!

I am not sure where all these people stayed with the negative reviews! We had a fabulous time at Sugar Bay! Yes, it's a little slow going at times there, but you have to remember you are on a island, and that is how they live.. slow going! ;) Our room was great and the grounds were kept very well. The beach was rocky when entering the ocean in some spots, but we found sections that weren't so rocky. All inclusive is definitely the way to go, as it could get really expensive otherwise! I was satisfied with the food, there were many different restaurants to choose from, and each offered something different. It does get a little buggy after the sun goes down, so I suggest bringing bug spray. We had a bay view room and it was beautiful! The view from the manor house restaurant in the main house is breathe taking! We took a ferry ride to st. John and rented a jeep for a day there. There are many beautiful beaches on both islands. We met tons of wonderful people there, both staff and other visitors. Red hook is a short taxi ride away and offers many great bars and restaurants as well. All in all, I would definitely recommend Sugar bay! Great place!

honeymoon

The facility was nice. The beach and pool were great. The customer service was bad. When we checked in we were giving no information. The food is over priced for the quality. I ordered stuffed mushrooms and paid $12 and got 2 regular button stuffed mushrooms. If you want snacks definitely get them while in town the store on site is way over priced. Taxi service is very speedy there is usually one or two waiting for passengers. The islands are beautiful. Meagans beach and coki beach are a must see. St. Thomas is a shoppers paradise.

not recomended

room was okay. bed was broken(box spring)reported this on 1st day. never fixed. towels not replaced every day. had to call to get clean ones. the food was buffet style and if it ran out you had to ask for staff to refill it. we had 25 family members in different rooms and mold was growing on air conditioning in a couple units. hotel overbooked and 3 people were put up in a different hotel until next day. but immediately after telling them hotel was overbooked the desk staff proceeded to check in the next 2 couples that came to desk. the hotel staff willingly admitted that the owner of the hotel was not putting money into the grounds. will not return to this resort but will go back to st Thomas.

Decent, but not great

The review can be very short- do not go here expecting a 5 star resort! Now some people may have enjoyed it very much and RATED it 5 stars, but it is NOT a 5 star resort. It is that simple. It CAN NOT be a 5 star resort simply because of the location of the beach and pool which are main attractions- and they are 98 steps up and down from the ground level (and 16 more for each floor up your room is). The beach is nice but not the best in the VI by far. We went to other beaches and there are nicer ones by far. The pool is nice as well, but one thing is there is no "kiddie" pool (less than 3 ft deep) and so we had to constantly watch the 4 year old. If you go and expect a reasonable 3 star place then you will be satisfied. If you expect more than that you need to go elsewhere. This is not negative- just a reality. The place was owned (is?? It is not clear as items in the room had the w and am name on them) by the wind yam place (the same folks who bring you such amazing places as the (look up the terrible places) must I go on??) so that is the same level as this place. Not bad, but not great. Some facts- they list a "kids club" for all inclusive but when we asked about it we got a run around. We asked several times and never got an answer. Turns out there is no such thing like you find at other all inclusives (you know, drop the kids off for 1/2 day of supervised fun while the adults take a break!). There was supposedly a pay baby sitting service but we could never get that either. The room stayed a steady 78 degrees. We asked to have AC fixed several times. Same deal. No response. I slept with only shorts on at night and no cover and was still sweating at night. POOR AC! The food as mentioned was fair. The lunch was pretty good. Breakfast was ok. Dinner was a doodie shoot. They had "taco night" one night. The kids only ate fruit on several meals. BUT....the price differential for all inclusive was only $350 for 5 days and 4 people so I think we got our money's worth. BUT if you PAID for a meal it was pricey! We would have spent $70 alone each lunch time. Drinks were ok. Typical resort fair. Lots of fruity stuff and cheap liquor. The c$a%r*ibe beer was not too bad though and they have coooors and budaliceous. We got our money's worth here too! Forget about the shuttle! It was pathetic. A Kia minivan that seats 6 people (plus driver) and we had 4, so whenever we waited it was at least 2 trips before we got on and each was 7-8 minutes (and loading and unloading to the back seats a pain!). They need to get one of those Island taxi vehicles! (When you go you will know what this means(. Staff was mixed. For the regulars if you give them a little tip ($5 or so) they did much better after that. The breakfast and dinner staff were SLOW (generally older people) and there were not enough of them. We waited first day 20 minutes just to get a table and there were many empty but not enough servers (and it is buffet). Since breakfast is included in more deals it tended to be more crowded. One thing to keep in mind though is that this IS the USA so unlike Mexico or Jamaica or other places they do have to pay a real wage to employees. BUT since it IS the USA the workers were not really motivated (in some cases). In Mexico they need jobs and work hard. Sadly in the US there is no reason (with no tips required). BUT there were good people there- Heather, Carolyn, Ross, Sherry I think at blue currants). But service was mixed. That is part of the island thing too. So bottom line you can get a cheaper and better experience in Mexico or other places, but you need a passport and it is NOT the USA. So if you want a decent place and not too expensive go to this resort. I would recommend with those caveats! And go to St. John for the day for sure. Hawks nest park is gorgeous! Cinnamon Bay is good for a "tourist" beach as well. There are many wonderful beaches and Cruz Bay is interesting little town.

Solo Venture...

Decided to take a solo venture after 22 years. I was very pleased with my choice. Check in was seamless and they let me into my room before check in time. The staff was friendly and professional. The lobby is pretty. Guest rooms were very neat, clean and comfortable. I could whine about the lack of a flat screen television, but I wasn't there to watch TV. I enjoyed the view from my balcony (facing the beach and pool area) as well as the terrace of the Manor House (breathtaking views). I paid for a sightseeing trip, which was almost canceled due to under enrollment. Fortunately, they called my room 30 minutes later to inform me that it was a go. Our tour guide, Michael, was great. He knew the St. Thomas history through and through, and took photos of me with background scenery since I was alone. Shopping at Havensight was great, and it was easy for me to get a taxi back to my hotel. Food was a bit pricey if you are not on the all inclusive plan (I wasn't). Drinks were decent, but you could always go to KMart and get your own! Nightlife was a little subdued, but you are literally a few miles away from things to do if you get bored. I will bring my daughter next time.

much needed vacation

The staff was extremly friendly and helpful to us, our favorite was the bell man (Maurice).Towels were difficult to get your hands on. I did not like the towel card thing at all.It was stressful keeping track of it. To top it off the towels were super poor quality anyways. We tried to go parasailing but i got cancelled and rescheduled for the next day at noon. The boat didn't show up until 1:30pm, just to be told it was being cancelled again. Was upset that we wasted all our time waiting around for nothing. Wish someone would of told us ASAP so we had time to do something else. The food was good, but there could of been a bigger variety. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves.

Shopping tip: In Hotel

I wish we would of known that there were vendors at the poolside one night. It cost us approx. $80 in cab fair to get down town and back to hotel to shop. They should have more vendors and do it more than 1 night a week. The hotel should offer courtesy vans to certain areas of the island. That would be great. Do not pay for the hotel transportation in advance. A taxi would be cheaper.
