Regretting Chenay Bay

TRUTH in review...

This was our second visit to St. Croix, and we had such a great experience the first time, we were excited to go back. We decided to stay at Chenay Bay because we new that we were getting a good deal for the vacation package, and couldn't imagine it being unpleasant. Well, we were wrong. Apparently this property is constantly being sold to new owners, and none of them have done anything to improve the property. While the cabin/cottage we were given had everything we needed to cook and sleep, it lacked SERIOUSLY in the cleanliness and comfort arena. The bed... a rock. Jetted tub sound nice? Got one! Did it work? No. Did the bathtub even have the function of being able to be stopped and filled. No. Days 1, 2 and 3 housekeeping came and made the bed and replaced towels, but that's all. Sheets were not changed. Day 4, no housekeeping service. When we went to the front desk to tell them no one had come and that we had no clean towels, the front desk attendant spent 5 minutes browsing through paperwork as if she could find an excuse to give us for them not tending to the room. Then, as I stood there, arms empty, she demanded that we bring the dirty towels to her before she would issue more. When I went back to the room to get them and presented them to her, she gave me 2 towels in exchange. No bath mat, no washcloths. I had also asked for a clean pair of sheets. We're on an island folks... there's sand everywhere. So, since housekeeping hadn't bothered to actually put fresh sheets on for several days, I decided to get the fresh set out of the closet and do it myself. Lo and behold, the 'clean set' in the closet was dirty. I don't mean stained, I mean DIRTY #footprints on the sheet#. I presented those to her as well, and she asked me where I had gotten them. I told her they were the clean set in the closet. She then asked me if they came off the pull out bed. Pretty sure I didn't stutter. Seriously. Just give me some dang clean sheets to put on my rock hard bed! They weren't even a little bit friendly or accommodating. Now, they have a restaurant/bar on site, Mahi's. It doesn't open until 11:00 a.m., they stop serving their limited menu at 3:00 p.m., and the bar portion closes at 7:00 p.m. So unless you buy food to cook in your room, or go into town, you're out of luck for food and drinks. The upside... the bartender, Sheri, was friendly and informative. She was the ONLY staff member that was helpful and welcoming. On to the pool; very dirty #can't see the bottom, or even the steps leading into the pool#. The water was very low the entire time. We saw them add water, but never quite enough to cover the first step into the pool or reach the skimmer/filter. I stayed at a different resort the first time we visited the island, and it was perfect. This was a sad and run down property in bad disrepair. I don't need fancy, and can get by with the bare minimum. It's all about the beach and relaxing, right? But, when the staff can't even get you clean towels, you can't get anything to eat or drink after 7:00 p.m., and the staff acts like you are intruding on their time when you need something as simple as clean linens, there's a problem. Best thing about our trip? Sheri the bartender, the view from our cottage, and our taxi driver, Tiger. Works part of our trip? Deciding to stay at Chenay Bay. Trust me folks... pass this one up and stay at Carambola or Buckaneer. From the moment you pull up at this property you are going to feel like you've wasted your money.

Most definitely do the Big Beard snorkeling trip to the coral reefs at Buck Island. Do the FULL DAY trip. This was our second time, and it's worth twice the price!

Needs TLC

We were greatly decieved by the photos. This place is not at all what is described. The grounds are overgrown and the beach was less than desirable. The restaraunt only served bar food (sometimes). If the grill worked. The bar didn't have soda for mixed drinks. I must say the staff the one or two on site were very pleasant. We were told the resort is bank owned and they are cutting costs everywhere. It is very clear that they really don't care. I must say the rooms were clean....run down but clean. We talked to other guests and some didn't have hot water. This place has so much potential and could be a great place. Hopefully someone will turn this place back to what it once was or so we were told. We will not be returning to Cheney Bay.

Peace, tranquility and relaxation

Chenay Bay was easily located with excellent directions from the Car rental. We had reserved through a third party and our reservation and room were ready. We were located in a cabin on the upper level with a great view of the blue carribean sea below. The hotel is not new but it was clean, with a new granite counter top, mini fridge and 2 burner cook top with all necessary dishes/utensils, etc. We had breakfast everyday on the veranda and enjoyed the beautiful tradewinds, and the peacefulness. The staff was always pleasant, helpful and accommodating. The beach had shade, beach towels and a tiki bar that opened from 11-7. The menu was very limited, hence the kitchette and take out or dine out. You should have a car if you want to get around because except for the beach there is nothing left to do here. However, we had an overall fantastic experience and plan on returning.

Rent a car. You don't need a Jeep, we had an economy car from Budget (very helpful and convienent) and used one tank of gas for the week. Buy the gas from Budget saved $.30/gallon.

these little cottages are adorable. I'll definitely recommend to friends and family. With a little more upgrades, this could be an almost resort kind of place. love the views, that makes it all worth it! Very near downtown Christiansted. Very convenient.

Nothing Special

Check in is at 4PM and check out is at 11AM. Don't know why it takes 5 hours to prep rooms. There aren't that many at this property and other places clearly does it in 3 hours. We were not allowed to check in until around 4PM, even though we observed there were tons of rooms unoccupied during our stay. The cottages were ordinary...nothing special. Walking into the room, it felt like a 2** motel. Some of the items and equipment in the room weren't working such as the phone. There was only 1 outlet to use in the bed area. Good thing I had a travel 3-to-1 splitter to add some much needed outlets to charge our phones. We've visited this property a couple years ago and the place has run down a lot since then. I saw pieces of paper stuck in cracks throughout the room. The purpose seemed to be to keep the bugs out. I would have thought some silicon or caulk would have been more appropriate and not so tacky. The rooms weren't really cleaned while we stayed. Trash was taken out and the bed was remade but there was a dead bug on the floor when we arrived and it was still there 4 days later when we departed. There was also a razor head behind the toilet when we got there and again, it was still there after leaving. There was a bunch of hair on the blow dryer from the previous guest (or guests). This proved to me that the level of cleaning wasn't where it should be. This site had the property listed as a 4**** hotel. At E x p e d i a is is listed as a 3***, this is really a 2**, maybe a 2**-1/2*. The beach at Chenay; however, is one of the best on St. Croix. The location is also great for water activities and things to do in St. Croix east end. The restaurant on property is also really good and the food is affordable. Overall, I don't think we will be returning to Chenay. The price was average but we are at the point in our lives where we prefer to stay in hotels that are truly 4**** (or even 3-1/2***) and above. If you aren't looking for anything special though, this is a good choice. Cheers!

Paradise view

If you are still wondering which island to visit, and would prefer "virgin-ness" over commercialization, come to St. Croix. And while you are here, you want to stay at Chenay Bay. Our room had the infinity pool to the left and blue-green ocean in front. There was a subtle hint of jasmine in the air when we sat on the porch to have morning coffee, always. I do recommend not turning on the porch light though, as it attracts the insects. I noticed that the guest population was slightly older, mostly couples who want to get away. It was quietly beautiful and hopefully remains that way as we plan to return for many years.

Very nice spot, nice cottages

I stayed at Chenay Bay the week of September 4, 2012. I got a very nice little cottage that was well furnished and had a nice little kitchenette. A/C worked well, and plumbing worked well. If you stay on St. Croix much, you may have a preference for staying closer to Christiansted, or on the East End. Chenay Bay is on the East End, but not too far from C'sted. Has a nice beach, too, with a view to the west and of Green Cay. A bit of a skeleton crew for staff when I was there, but it was low season. All in all, a very good place.

The continental breakfast should be included in room cost.

I requested 2 double beds and got a king size one. if you come in later in the evening; they do not have sufficient staff to accommodate you getting to your room with the bags. Food was excellent.
