Beautiful location, friendly staff but outdated rooms
My family (3 teenagers, 2 adults) stayed at The SugarBay from December 22, 2012 until December 26, 2012. The grounds are beautiful and the location is private - the snorkeling on the hotel grounds is very nice, just get in the water far to the right or you will be stepping on rocky shores for a bit. Unlike some of the reviews I read, I found the staff to be friendly and courteous - a five dollar bill here and there will ensure this. The only drawback to this hotel was outdated rooms. In one day we switched one of our hotel rooms three times due to plumbing that didn't work and mold in the room. While the hotel was sure to move us, the inconvenience was horrible. Our final room had three light bulbs that did not work, a refrigerator that leaked and a bathroom towel bar that was down. My teenagers did not have a problem with their room, other than the television did not work. If hotel management concentrated more on caring for the rooms my stay would have been more enjoyable. The food is nothing to rave about, although a night at the Manor House is recommended. The lobby will help you rent a boat for the day or make reservations for any type of water sport. Vernill especially was exceptional. We did the all inclusive vacation deal which was good for my family. It saved us some money but the trip was still expensive. Next time, if we venture to St.Thomas again, I would not stay at the SugarBay, but would spend a bit more for the Ritz (as one employee told me to do) or rent a condo.

Needs TLC
The hotel food is terrible, so bad, in fact, we only ate once within the entire hotel. The small towns and other nearby hotels offered far greater value and food. The hotel is sort of maintained but does need some work. The service staff needs a lot of TLC. Overall, the best grade I can give is C.

Wonderful getaway for our wedding anniversary
Everything at the resort was wonderful! We did the all inclusive resort view for a week and it was so worth every penny! We were located in an area of St. Thomas that wasn't too hard to travel to town from and everyone at the resort was so nice and helpful. Please visit the Red Hook Dive Center on your stay. The food is good for the price. Take a safari cab down to Charlotte Amalie or even to the ferry to St. John. I would recommend this resort to everyone. My husband loved that he could snorkel right off their private beach and I got the perfect tan. Not too crowded - our stay was awesome.

all inclusive but not worth it
The hotel was nice enough but the service was just okay. Whole place shuts down at midnight. That's just strange. No food available after that. No room service! The food is subpar in quality too. For the price we paid, I expect more than just a clean room and good view. I expected higher standards on everything including the food and service. ASIDE from that the wedding services were GREAT.

The staff were very helpful and attentive to the needs of the family members attending the wedding. The hotel was beautiful and a great get away! Room had recently been redone, and could have used some extra cleaning in the bathroom area. Sheet rock dust noted in all corners.

Vacation In St. Thomas
The Hotel Staff were great. The room however was not great at all. The carpet was very dirty, there were cracked tiles in the bathroom rust everywhere. The balcony was very unpleasant couldn't even go outside and relax and enjoy the view.

What a beautiful place and what a deal we got!
My husband had some extra vacation days at the end of the year and so we looked on your website and got the greatest deal on airfare/hotel together, and we just lucked out to be in a resort of this quality, as we were prepared to be in a lot humbler accommodations. The hotel is built onto a cliff overlooking a beautiful bay, and our room had spectacular water views. We would eat breakfast daily on the balcony overlooking the water, while pelicans flew by us at only a few feet away, and dove for fish in the water below. There are kayaks available for use, a beautiful pool with waterfalls and a bridge over it, and a built-in pool bar, and a flashy evening show in the pool area once/week with Caribbean music and dancing, fun to see. There is a spa if you wish to go, also a fitness center, iguana feeding area (they get SO close to you, very cool), tennis courts, a bridal terrace for taking some really picturesque photos, daily schedule of resort activities (we didn't have time for), boat tours you pay extra for, scuba lessons in the pool, great snorkeling right at the hotel beach. This place occupies 40 acres and we didn't even go to the mini golf or do most of the stuff, as we had rented a car and went off to explore the island and also other islands. Staff was not bend-over-backwards outgoing or anything, but they were fine, some friendlier than others. Fridge in room saved us some dining money; we discovered a supermarket in Red Hook that had niceprepared foods for sale. Absolutely no complaints, except maybe the sand fleas, which come out on the beach around 4 pm, but that is just mother nature. Use repellant or stay in the water, which is very warm and crystalline for snorkeling conditions, which we loved. This was our first time to the Caribbean and we loved it! Thank you for the amazing package deal you gave us -- another couple we met paid more just for the airfare than we did for the air plus hotel!

Rent a car or you'll pay for all the food at the resort, which is not cheap. Nearby in Red Hook (less than 5 minute drive) there are cheaper places to get a bite if you don't feel like fine dining all the time. Taxi prices can add up quickly if you don't have your own car.

Great place -- save money by not doing all inclusive!
This was a great hotel. We stayed here for our first time, and didn't know to do the all-inclusive or not. ended up saying "no" to it - which worked out better because we could eat and drink anywhere else on the islands we wanted to without feeling like we wasted money at the resort. besides, free drinks seemed to be flowing around a lot anyway. Great staff, very friendly awesome people who were willing to help with whatever we wanted to do. The room was kinda "meh"....concrete floor with a cheap bamboo matting near the couch and bed. the bed was a little uncomfortable and slumped in towards the middle. the shower door and toilet door did not shut properly....but really minor details in the grand scheme of things. 99 steps was a fun twist , to be honest....which kept the sleeping part of your vacation separate from the playing part. I didn't hear anyone being loud and obnoxious because it was further down away from the lodging portion. great workout! awesome pools -- pool bar was a lot of fun, and nicely kept. i didn't see garbage anywhere on this resort. very clean. The towel thing was kind of odd -- and made us paranoid that we'd loose the cards and get charged. Food was hit or miss - which made me even more glad we didn't get the all-inclusive. lunch was simple, but satisfying. dinner buffets weren't worth $40 a pop, and the dress code was not enforced. So yeah - I recommend using this place for the cheap rooms (with amazing views), and save your money by eating out elsewhere. Drinks are $8 a pop here - but you usually get a few random free shots mixed in with it.

Sightseeing tip:
Short drive from hotel
Take the safari's on the main road to red hook. during the day it's $1 per person --- then catch a ferry over to St. John. $6 a person....cheap transportation for getting to another island on your vacation.

Fun trip for us I'm 31 he is 38 and we had a good time. Good location not far from down town or red hook or anything else we wanted to do swim with sea lions!! Our room was nice and clean wonderful view of beach and pool with just being standard no need to up grade. Food was good a lot to choose from and we don't eat red meat or pork. The staff was very nice so little tips was ok with me. We had all inclusive worked out perfect. Wonderful week in my book : )

Great time in St Thomas!
The hotel welcomed us with drinks, gave us an update with a room with an excellent view. It was a pleasant stay and we had a great deal for room rates, there was a 75% discount. Things I did not like: There was not much option for food for customers who did not choose all inclusive option. There was a cafe in the lobby but the service was very slow. The hotel beach was nice but not great for swimming, there are stones in the water. But the beaches nearby are excellent. However even for the closest place (2 mins) you need to take a cab and it is minimum 6 dolar per person. There was a nice safari vehicle (1 or 2 dollars) passing from the main door but it goes only in one direction (red hook direction).
