Eco-resort caters to families and budget travelers on St. John
Maho Bay Camps was an eco-friendly resort before the term even existed. The vast property, located in the lush Virgin Islands National Park, features tent cottages and studios that are accessed by circuits of stairs and decks. A water sports center offers guests the opportunity to kayak, snorkel and sail from a private white sands beach (rental fees apply). Or take advantage of entertainment not found at other resorts, including yoga classes, glass-blowing, papermaking and watercolor painting classes (fees apply).
Highlights
  • Yoga on site
  • Bird watching expeditions
  • Water sports on site

Rooms
At Maho Bay Camps, guests choose between two types of accommodations. The 114 Maho Tent Cottages have private balconies but shared bathrooms and showers. Each studio also features a deck that offers spectacular ocean views. A propane stove and ice cooler is found in each cottage, along with a fan, but there is no air conditioning.
Features
"Camping without having to pitch a tent" is how some guests describe Maho Bay Camps. The roomy tent cottages and studios are sheltered by lush hillside greenery, although many offer sea views. Maho Bay Camps is an ideal resort for the adventure-minded and there is plenty of adventure to be had. From kayaking and snorkeling to hiking, bird-watching and even art classes (fees apply) entertainment abounds. The resort restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, and the fare is described as "homemade" and "delicious." A camp store also is stocked with food, beverages and sundries.

Rustic adventure in the caribbean.

We found out about Maho from a friend who had just visited St. Thomas island. We did a little research and felt that this place seemed to fit our style, plus the price was right compared to other places on the island. We stayed at Maho for six nights. This place is perfect for those wanting to be very close to nature and experience the wilderness of the islands. At Maho you stay in a Tent-cabin, which is like a square yurt. It's very simple living and yes there are bugs and lizards in your room, but hey that's nature right? Everything on the islands is pretty expensive compared to Oregon standards, but we understand cause tourism drives their economy, if you don't like it don't go back. At Maho you can shop at the store then go make you dinner in your cabin, keeps things on the cheaper side. Snorkeling and hiking are by far the funnest things we did while we were there. Many great spots are minutes away and we saw seaturtles at almost everywhere we got in the water. If you really want to get around the island and maximize your time just rent a jeep or car and things go much faster. We didn't rent a car, I think next time we'll get around by motorcycle. If you cannot climb stairs do not stay at Maho, period. This place is all about limiting impacts on the enviroment, therefore you take cold showers, use waterless urinals and climb alot of steps to get around. For most people that like camping or hiking of any sort it's not a problem at all, really it adds to the uniqueness of the place. We will absolutely go back. Bring some of your own food, a bit of bug spray and your snorkeling gear and you won't regret staying there.

Cruz bay sucks, it's just another town that's busy. If your going to Maho, explore Cruz on the first few days, because after being away from civilization for four or five days, town is not very exciting anymore.

Adventure Time!

Staying at Maho has been a great vacation with value prices to match. If you ever went to camp as a kid and loved it, you will be happy here! The staff was very friendlly and helpful( see Ben for activities and Bill in the art shop). Food was tasty, we did not want to spend time cooking when we could be on the beach. This is def a vacation for those who want to be active! Our son met a new friend on the beach almost every day. We will be back!

If you like snorkeling, try out different bays each day. Some have better coral formations, while others provide better wildlife sightings.

Snorkeling in paradise

With 5 snorkeling beaches in walking distance, I couldn't ask for more. This was my fifth visit to this place. Good meals in the restaraunt. Staff are attentive and friendly. Investment in the infrastructure is overdue pending lease extention. Really needs to be done.

Blue, blue beach, white sand and forest......

You've got to be OK with living in nature. The tent was more like living in a tree house. Nature is all around you and sometimes in the tent. There are many, many, many stairs to climb. Expect not to gain weight on vacation, as you will be going up and down lots of stairs. The beach is beautiful! Pristine. I never left the resort. You are living in a national park. There is plenty to do if you get tired of the beach/sun. I took a pottery class and a glass workshop in their studios. I went sailing around the BVI and had a wonderful time snorkeling. The kayaking is terrific. The food was good and not expensive. There is a limited menu and there is no waiter service, so if you are looking for that, look elsewhere. I would go back in a minute. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. I can’t say enough about how beautiful the place is. It is such a treat to really get away and be surrounded with such beauty.

Water Sports Experience

One must understand that this is a camping facility. So, with that in mind, I believe that it is a good value for the budget minded. However, we found that the Maho Bay Water Sports Center which rents beach chairs, small craft, snorkeling gear and provides SCUBA lessons was completely inadequate. When we tried to discuss an issue with the owner he was competely uninterested bordering on rude. His attitude was condescending and left the feeling that it was only about making money. Service was not in his dictionary. St. John is all about the beach and water. The negative attitude of the Maho Bay Water Sports center ruined my experience. BTW, bring lots of bug spray

Family Holiday

We loved the location and the environment where our little hut was located. From our terrace we could see the whole vview of Maho Bay area and it was beaufitul. During the period we stayed there was so much rain everyday in the morings and mid-nights and water flooded into our hut through the wired windows so our bedings got wet with rain. In the end of our staying our whole body got bitten by the bedbugs everywhere. I hope Maho Bay Camps can take this as consideration and improve the quality in an better safe environment.

paradise comes with a price

Maho bay camps has the most amazing view of nearby islands, national jungle/forest and Maho Bay beach. They have the friendliest staff and the best water activities ( snorkling, kayaking, scuba and windsurfing). This place is not meant for people who are used to nice hotels. There is no restrooms in your cabin, mosquito bites by the hour, lizards and bugs crawl in your cabin through the floor, cold showers and restaurant only open a few hours a day. Eventhough im still itching from the mosquito bites, I fell in love with Maho Bay camps

You cannot find a nightclub on the whole island. This is a place to wear shorts and swimsuits, walk around bare foot and go hiking everywhere. Even if you go into the local town all you will find are little bars with boomboxes playing local radio stations. Plus everyone goes to sleep early ( 10 ish).

An Interesting Experience! We loved it (most of it)

My fiancé and I wanted to go to the U.S. Virgin Islands, but needed to do so on a budget. (Teacher and Waitress income). So we decided to go to the Maho Bay Camps and it was great (at first). We woke up early and went snorkeling for hours. The beach is wonderful. One of the best beaches on St. John for sure. The location of the camp is great too. It's far enough away so the beach is mostly just for yourself and the sunsets/rises are amazing. Obviously the Stairs are terrible, but it is what it is. The food was great at the camp, but cost a little bit. If you have transportation, going into Cruz Bay is a better experience and a lot of fun. The whole trip was a great experience and a lot of fun. But, here is the problem, let it be known that the bugs are bad. The first four days there was fine, but about day five you don't want to go back to camp to sleep. We tended to stay late in Cruz Bay, which was fun, but dreaded coming back to mosquitoes, spiders, millipedes, lizards, and (sigh...) yes on cockroach. This is just a small thing though when you look at the price. Our stay was around $80 a night. We drove over to the Westin just to see the price.... $400 a night. Yeah, that wasn't happening. So you get what you pay for and if you can just deal with the bugs and heat then you are fine. We had a great time, but next time might try to split up the time between Maho and a Hotel.

Money-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

Eat at local places around the island. Not only will you save some money, you will see more of the island and get some stories to take back home. St. John is a beautiful place, so go out and explore it all.

great camping!

Beautiful beaches in the neighborhood! If you love nature, and don't mind seeing iguanas and lizards on your doorstep (occasionally in your room), you'll love this place! The tent cottages are comfortable enough, but the beach might be a bit of a walk depending on your tent's location, but it's definately worth it! On-site restaurant and grocery store are alright, though quite pricey.
