Romantic beach getaway
My boyfriend and I stayed for 9 nights and would go back. The Buccaneer is about a 7 minute drive to Christiansted and about a 7 - 12 minute drive to the east end where there are more restaurants. If you want to spend your days on the beach there are 3 to choose from. They provide free use of kayaks, floaties, and snorkel gear. The staff is warm, helpful, and friendly. Our biggest complaint was the food. Lunch selections at The Mermaid were ok enough but dinner at the Terrace was always disappointing. Everything sounded really good but the execution was lacking. The full breakfast buffet that is included was definitely good enough - decent variety. The spa is small but provided good services. The golf course is beautiful. If you're looking for a very mellow, quiet, romantic vacation, this is the place. If you're looking for more action and nightlife, St. Thomas would be more suitable.

Harvey's - local, island food. open for lunch only. warm, friendly staff, excellent food. Kim's - also local, island food. lunch and dinner. VERY SLOW service but if you're prepared for that, the food is really good. Duggan's Reef - good, casual food, specializing in spiny lobster.

Great Vacation
Had a great time, enjoyed the facility, people and room. Had an issue with the a/c part way through my stay - the maintance folks had it corrected within 30 mins. My only complaint, the rules for the pools should be enforced. Children were running, jumping and diving into the pool while adults were trying to swim. When brought to the parents attention, who by the way were not watching their children, they just ignored us who made mention.

Harvey's for great local cuisine and friendly service. Kim's for a stiff rum and coke (it came in a pint glass) and good food, service is really slow.

Great time!
This was our first time in the US Virgin Islands. St. Croix is an interesting place, a place of contrasts. The Buccaneer is a great place to go if you want a peaceful, relaxing vacation. And that we had. I have to admit, I don't like crowds, and the Buccaneer estate provided both a great range of activities and the privacy we were looking for. The grounds are beautiful and the staff very friendly and accommodating. Actually, we learned something new... "turn-down" time in the evening, when the staff would come and prepare the room for the night by getting the beds ready, refreshing the ice bucket, etc. We were out and about so we didn't use these services, but it was nice to know that such a service is available. For us it meant that they really care about their guests. They offer a wide range of services right on the property, and if you don't feel like it, you can stay there forever. You don't need to go anywhere unless you really want to experience the island (which you should). The island offers a wide range of activities, mostly water related, though there is a beautiful botanical garden, a must see, and a rain forest, which should also be a stop, especially if you didn't have a chance to see one before. Snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, kayaking are only a few things you have plenty of options for. As for the beach, there are so many to choose from, that there is no point in mentioning any one specific here (we didn't get to see them all, but those we did were beautiful). In one sentence, fine sand beaches, blue water and absence of crowds makes for a great experience. In one word, FANTASTIC!

Excellent escape. We totally relaxed!
The waiters and housekeeping could not be any nicer. The breakfast buffet was delicious and different every day, even omelets and pancakes to order on the spot. The 2 beaches and pool was nice to have. Towels galore! Entertainment every evening. It is quite hilly so we suggest rooms that put you closer to the beach. 2 restaurants on the beach are convenient for lunch.

Shopping tip:
Short drive from hotel
We rented a car and drove most of the island. We shopped and dined like the locals. We were careful driving on the left side and tried to stay off the roads at dark.

Wonderful for a couple but still lots of room outside for kids of all ages
Started great with taxi ride from airport, about twenty minutes, seeing a lot of the island. Arrival at hotel is impressive, up a large hill to the main building overlooking the sea and the town. everything is openair as the weather was never very hot or cool. We were surprised to find our room had been upgraded to one of the beach side rooms and I mean only thirty or forty feet away without even asking. When we went on the private patio overlooking a pool and the beach it reminded us of a movie scene. The hotel staff was very polite and knowledgeable. I regret we did not have time to shop in Christiansted as most shops were closed for the long holiday weekend. I also regret not having had a chance to play golf on the hotel course. you need more than four nights to truly enjoy the hotel's amenities and it seems like a small personal place. Even if you don't stay at the Buccaneer you need to go to the hotel at sunset, get drinks at the bar, then have dinner on the terrace. Drive around the island at your own risk as the roads are bumpy and potholed.

Hotel has three or four dining facilities. Two are located right on the beach and were fun to eat at listening to and seeing the surf. However the view from the main dining room and bar was stupendous especially at night.

Great Trip, Staff Needs a Little Work
I had gone to the Buccaneer as a child, and now I returned with my daughter to the same beach where I learned to snorkel, so the trip was special to me. In most ways, the hotel lived up to my memory; rooms were great, the beach was beautiful, and the overall experience was excellent. However, on several occasions, I was disappointed by staff shortages, slowness and non-responsiveness. It was clear one afternoon at the Mermaid restaurant lunch shift that there was not enough wait staff to handle the people. One dinner night, the waiter gave a guest with me a very hard time with sending a plate back, AFTER the waiter himself suggested it. Most annoying for me was when another night, the waiter forgot to tell me about the special. An apology and an offer to order it would have been correct. When I asked about it, he simply said that most nights, they have a lobster special and shrugged it off. No apology. Since I don't work or live in the hotel, I'm not responsible to know what the specials are "most nights." But overall, I was happy, and I would definitely return.

Had better for price
Overall not bad. Had a very disappointed dinner one night. Though this would never happen at a resort of this class. Service was the worst i ever had at a resort where you are paying top dollar. They need more help to take care of the guest having dinner.Would not return to this resort again no matter what.
