Very unhappy
anonymous chicka Sep 8, 2009
We came to spend Labor Day weekend. Upon arrival, we were told that there was an additional $25 per person per day fee to ... use the gym. Upon checkout, I was charged a resort fee - that allowed me to "step on their property". When I called to ask about this fee, the manager was very rude and hung up on me twice. The argument escalated at the front desk at check out when I was told she was talking to me how I was talking to her and that I would have to deal with it. Eventually, she attempted to apologize but I am left with a bad taste in my mouth over undisclosed fees.

French Country Inn was not far, and worth a visit. Good food and service and live music, and not overpriced. Soprito Bistro in town, had tasty food but extremely small portions and poor service. Lunch for 4 was almost $200 with no liquor and we left hungry.

Seasoned Traveler Sep 6, 2009
A facelift and major spend were not enough to bring this tired old facility back and when you add in poor service, marginal ... food and poor noise control, you have a recipe for a failing property. Would not recommend to friends, family or someone we don't know. Way overpriced to boot.

Comfy high beds and many swimming pools
Barbara Gordon Aug 13, 2009
We went for an anniversary trip. Comfy beds, almost need a stepping stool if you're five feet tall. I was a bit scared by ... some of the negative reviews, but although the hotel itself is old, the rooms have been nicely renovated and you can only tell you are in an older building in some of the hallways. Nice flat screen TV's, microwave and fridge in a cabinet. Good in-room coffee- and a Starbucks near the lobby if you need it. ;) Nice warm indoor pool. It was too cold for the outside pools, but they seem to be everywhere and looked nice. The indoor hot tub was so over-chemicalled that just the fumes burned our eyes, so that was disappointing. Didn't get to use the included fitness center, because although the spa was open until 10, the fitness center closed at 8. Wish they'd put that in the book so we could've planned differently. I hear the massages are superb, too. Nice concierge, nice housekeeping. Their private beach is on the harbor, not the lake, so it's murky and not for swimming. We paid $12 to go to the public beach, within walking distance. Plenty of amenities. Plenty to see outside. If you want to golf, go to the Geneva Grand. If you want to walk around, hike, boat, play on the beach, or just relax, stay at the Abbey. You'll have to drive to downtown Lake Geneva either way.

Beautiful resort, lousy public relations
SuzieQ Aug 2, 2009
The resort and the room itself were absolutely beautiful, with all of the "right touches". For example, the room had real ... glasses as opposed to paper cups, a feather duvet, and even bathroom scales, among other amenities. However, the guest relations personnel were very rude, and not helpful at all. Upon checkout, I was told that there was a $12 per person "resort use fee" that was NOT included in the amount I paid up front through Orbitz. They said I should have been told about this when I checked in. . .but I wasn't. They said it was for the privilege of using the pool, games, etc.. . . none of which I used. There were MANY people complaining about this being a "rip off" while I was checking out. Other people had booked a "stay 3, pay for 2 night deal", and were charged for all 3 nights at checkout.

I went to Las Vegas in May and spent the same amount of money for 4 nights in a celebrity suite, as I did for two nights in ... this hotel. I was unable to visit the Abbey Resort on this past Memorial holiday. I was scheduled to visit for a 1- day overnight stay ... but had an unfortunate family emergency which resulted in hospitization of a memeber and was unable to visit the Abbey. I could not receive a refund because of the Orbitz strict cancellation policy. Please be careful when booking any lodging or traveling reservations online through Orbitz. They are not forgiving regarding cancellations! Hopefully, one day I will visit the famous Abbey Resort & Spa.

John Aug 3, 2008
I hadn't been to the Abbey since I was a child. It was fun then, and it's a nice romantic or family getaway now. The staff ... was friendly and polite, and the setting in beautiful. I would be better if the small beach off of the back lawn could be used by guests, but the boaters have taken that over. However, there is a nice beach across the street. For the money, a complementary breakfast would be a good addition or maybe a few free drinks at one of the bars. Beware of the facility pass you get when you check in. They add fees onto your bill for everything you use, including the business center, in-room Internet access and the shuttle bus. I can't believe a resort with its reputation doesn't offer some of this for free.
Traveler type: Couples
If you're planning to spend most of your time in the town of Lake Geneva, be prepared to do a lot of driving or stay in Lake Geneva. There isn't much to do in Fontana except the beaches and marinas. I recommend the parasailing -- with a dip! The restaurants on the waterfront get very crowded on Saturdays. Plan ahead or go to Lake Geneva.
