Four-diamond comforts in Richmond’s Shockoe Slip

The Berkeley Hotel opened in 1988, but the attention to detail leads most visitors to believe it is much older. The hotel stands at the crossroads of Richmond's business district and historic Shockoe Slip and was designed to be architecturally similar to the buildings surrounding it. Within just months after opening, the Berkeley Hotel achieved a AAA four-diamond rating and has held this honor every year since. Guests can choose from 55 non-smoking rooms.

Highlights
  • Boutique hotel known for stellar service
  • AAA four-diamond rating
  • Award-winning dining room
Rooms

The 55 spacious guest rooms are well appointed with solid cherry furnishings and traditional high-quality fabrics, including 100 percent cotton Frette sheets and goose down and feather pillows. Many rooms offer an unparalleled view of downtown Richmond and the beautifully restored tobacco warehouses housing restaurants and boutique shops in the Shockoe Slip neighborhood. Additional amenities include free wireless Internet, shower massage, iron, ironing boards, and hairdryers. The Governor's Suite features two full baths, a luxurious king size bed, large private terrace and panoramic view of Shockoe Slip.

Features

The Dining Room at The Berkeley Hotel serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily and features a menu featuring fresh local cuisine. Rich mahogany paneling, impressionistic paintings and a spectacular view of Shockoe Slip make The Dining Room at The Berkeley Hotel a great choice for a meal with the family, an important business lunch, or any special occasion. Ok for a brief stay

The hotel is older and does have some charm. The rooms are all very close to the elevator - especially mine- even after specifically requesting a room as far from the elevator as possible. There is a lot of street noise, so sleeping was not great. They seemed to be short staffed and the individual checking us in had few customer service skills.

The Berkeley Is Amazing

My wife and I wanted a night away from our 4 month old daughter and this was the best experience possible! We ordered the Crab Cakes as a appetizer before we headed out for the evening and they it was amazing!! Our room was on the 6th floor and had a great view of the City and a patio. Staff was great and very helpful. The beds and linens were amazingly comfortable - which is often my main complaint for a Hotel.

Okay

Nice lobby, helpful staff, bar closed before 10:00p. Breakfast not very good and the waiters made a huge fuss about my Starbucks coffee..ran over and told me I had to leave, then brought a coffee cup out and made me transfer it. Very odd! Room was nice< no water, charged $4 for water bottle in the room.

Unique soho type district of Richmond

The hotel itself is a perfect location to many things in the inner area of Richmond. Although you rated it 4 star but I would give it a 3 star( as I put the four seasons, some times the ritz at 4 star). What is 4 star is the service, restaurant food and service. Also, what is 4 star is location. Great location with great restaurants within the block or next. It is near the farmers market, holocaust museum, etc.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

If you are going to the Hat Factory for a show, this is the place to stay. [...] was a lot cheaper than the hotel website for the room.

Berkeley Hotel Richmond

We stayed one night at the Berkeley, and the experience was enjoyable. We had a single room with a King bed, which was very comfortable. Really no complaints, other than a parking situation in which I had to park my own truck because the parking garage/lot was full/unavailable at the time. Other than that, no problems at all. The price was reasonable as well. Location was great, right across the street from Tobacco Co and within walking distance to other bars and restaurants in the Bottom.

The Berkeley

The staff were very friendly and helpful. My group was trying to decide were to eat while in the lobby and ended up having a great conversation with an employee about all the best local spots. Also, the valet was always very upbeat and personable. Makes for a nicer overall experience when the staff seem happy. The room was great.
