Great stay in downtown

Stayed here for a night on my way down south with my wife. Went to Taproom and Tobacco Resturant across the street. Taproom was awesome. Great beers and food. Hotel in convent location. 95 was literally 3 turns away from the hotel.

Great Staff in Historic Hotel

This is clearly a historic (old fashioned) place, which wouldn't normally be my choice, but this was a great location and the staff were super friendly.

Getaway

The hotel was perfectly situated in historic Shockoe Bottom. Lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance. Loved the coffee place across the street. So quaint. The furnishings were very art deco -- just lovely. Only problem was they didn't have a fitness facility -- you had to go to the YMCA and the hotel will provide a guest pass. But we went on Memorial Day so the Y was closed. Also they did not give free wifi which is weird in this day and age when wifi is practically a necessity. Front desk staff was very polite and helpful. It was a slow weekend and the nightingale lounge and restaurant seemed closed but maybe that was only because no one was eating there. Valet is $21 per day! To save, you can park on the street or use the parking garage across the street from hotel for $6 per day. Try the Urban Farmhouse coffeeshop across the street, The Tobacco bar across the street has good mojitos and live bands. We appreciated the nice little touches the hotel provided like a little note with tomorrow's weather, turn down service, little chocolates on the side table. All in all a good stay. Will recommend.

Bad reservation process

The room was advertised online as "two deluxe beds" as part of the identifying characteristics. I rented it on that basis as I was traveling with a male associate. When we checked in we were told that the room had a king bed and nothing could be done. I complained but was told that the type of bed is a "preference". The only " preference" on the application process was regarding smoking.. Since there was no issue regarding beds on the application, and the room was advertised as a "two deluxe beds" room, I assumed the room I was renting would have two rooms. It did not and it made for an awkward situation that negatively affected my experience. Otherwise, it is a nice hotel in other aspects, but it is a big "otherwise". Frustrating.

Poor staff experiences, average hotel

The location was perfect, just 3 blocks from where I needed to go. From the outside, it seems like it's going to be a very nice, throwback, old school nice place. It's attractive and cozy enough and all of that, but they have a couple of big problems. The front desk clerk who checked me in took an eon. It took so long, it was bizarre. There was no line and absolutely nothing else going on so it's not like I caught them at a bad time. The reservation the desk clerk asked me to sign had a different rate than what I booked and pre-paid on OBTZ -- She tried to blame OBTZ for that but I know from experience at other hotels that she had made an entirely new reservation at a different rate, then tried to tell me that hadn't happened. I booked a King, was given 2 double beds, ok, whatever. I do think I may have been downgraded from the reservation I made, unless their premium rooms have an alley view of a fire escape and brick building 6 feet away from the window. If that is a Premium room, they need to re-label them so either way, not cool. I tried calling the desk later hoping to deal with someone else, but she answered and gave me the same bogus story. Unfortunately on checkout, it was the same clerk -- she had changed something in the reservation after I checked in but It still doesn't look right. Again, checking out took forever -- maybe 15-20 minutes even though I was the only person there. I now must check my cc bill to make sure I haven't been overcharged. I never got a satisfactory explanation for the different rates, just told not to worry about it essentially because they have no control over what rates OBTZ quotes and what their confirmation says and that my cc statement will reflect what their folio did not. for what it's worth, I've never had this problem in 10 years of using OBTZ. She implied it was my fault for booking on OBTZ -- of course the OBTZ rate was $45 cheaper than what I could get directly from their website. I asked for restaurant recommendations -- was told their restaurant was the best in the area. It was very average and some of my food wasn't even hot. The parking valet on checkout was a little clueless, didn't offer to help with luggage, open trunk while my hands were full -- just weird for a place that advertises AAA 4 diamonds. The bartender/waitress in the restaurant was very pleasant and gracious, that's about the best thing I can say.

very nice quick visit

We were in Richmond just overnight and this was a great place to stay. Very convenient to restaurants and night life. The hotel has a nice, more personal feel since it is smaller. The room was nice, bar was very nice. We did not eat in the restaurant but the food smelled great and we regretted that we had not eaten there as where we ate was mediocre at best! My only complaint was that we had a room on the alley side of the hotel. About 7 am we awoke to what I assume was staff congregating to take cigarette breaks but they were pretty loud. Luckily it did not happen at 3am!

But the location is great

Our first room smelled of smoke. They moved us promptly to a better smelling but smaller room. The fitness centery was closed both days. No hair dryer in room. The street noise kept us up most of the night. Breakfast was very good and the location is great.
