Richmond stay

Our stay at The Clarion Hotel was pleasant and comforting. Shower was instantly hot and the spray was like a gentle rain...soothing ! The hot breakfast was welcoming even though the set up was a bit clumsy in where they located their plates for patrons to use. Those making Belgian waffles blocked access for others to get to the plates. I would stay there again as it is a good location and a fair price.

GBQ

For the past 4 summers I've traveled to Richmond for the GWARBQ. I've stayed at this Clarion for the past 3 years now & I love it there. This past year there had been an upgrade to the hotel & it definitely seemed better. A lot of fans & friends stay at this hotel for the same event, the staff are understanding & generally do not bother us. The rooms are clean & most have a nice balcony. The price had increased from last year but is still affordable. A rental car is needed for convenient travel around the area, I'm not sure if they offer a shuttle, but it's a little way from downtown. I recommend it & I'll be back next year!

Great hotel for a big group party

I hit RVA every year for an event called GWARBQ. Hundreds of friends from all over the world do, too. We have adopted this hotel as our own a few years back, I was there last year and this year. We love it because the balconies and pool are great for partying it up with our pals. They never closed the pool on us, and only ran us off when we got way out of hand loud. Well last year, the restaurant was terrible and now it's totally rebranded and fixed. I spoke to mgt and they are presently in process of upgrading and fixing the wifi setup, it's bad and they know it. The place is not the most convenient to our event, but it's convenient to the interstate and other things. When we want to mix up our dining options, the place across the street is good too. One issue, the streets all around the place were closed for a Midnight Bike ride event Sat. night and I spoke to the hotel management and they will be talking to the city about making ONE of the hotel's 2 entrances accessible in future years during this thing. The "road closed" sign cut us off like 50 feet from an entrance. I think they could spare us 50 feet? Anyhow it can't hurt for them to try. The thing that's cool is that this hotel's management spoke to me as I left about being in touch to better coordinate next year, they actually want to offer group deals and cater to us and do well by us in the future. They really appreciate the business so if you've got a group in town, it's a good choice. As for standard hotel quality issues like pristine bathrooms and whatever...it ain't the Ritz. Honestly. But I've stayed in worse. For a party hotel it RULES. They tell me that next weekend the Jimmy Buffet people (Parrotheads?) will be there. Which makes complete sense to me.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Hop across the street to Kitchen 64, their portions are huge and their food is delicious. Hotel restaurant ain't bad either, they completely fixed it from how awful it used to be about a year ago.

Good Price and Location

Spent one night there as part of a road trip. The hotel has a restaurant that I didn't get to try. But there was another great restaurant right across the street. Its literally right off the I95 exit. Which was great. There's a gas station across the street too. The pool seemed clean- I didn't get to try it. The room was average but I really picked it for the location and the price. It didn't disappoint.

Reasonable & Comfortable, w/very minor glitch

Our room was a king, n/s, on the 3rd floor. We experienced no problems at all with staff, service, cleaning, etc. The one glitch involved the smoke detector in the room. When we got there, there wasn't one - it had been taken off the wall and was gone. I notified Shawn of this, and he immediately sent up a maintenance man with a new one. He installed one, and life was good. When we came in the second evening, the smoke alarm was beeping (bad battery?). I again called Shawn, and he immediately sent up a different maintenance man. He took the alarm off the wall, fiddled with it, declared that the battery was new (and therefore not the problem), but couldn't get it to stop beeping. (That may explain why it was missing when we arrived.) The ultimate solution was to simply take it off the wall, remove the battery (it kept beeping until that happened, which leads me to believe that it was the battery all along), and leave it on the nightstand for the next 2 nights. That was fine with me, and caused no heartburn on my part. We left our dog at home, as it was cheaper to board him than to pay the $25 per night pet fee. The room had a fridge and a microwave, and was sufficiently stocked with coffee. There's no continental breakfast, but plenty of places around to get food if needed. The location was great, the pool was a little small but clean and very enjoyable, and we'll definitely stay there again!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

The Kitchen 64 restaurant across the street is fantastic and reasonably priced - breakfast, sandwiches, salads, adult beverages - it should meet all your needs. Also, the Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball park (minor league) is just down the street, and offers a great afternoon/evening's entertainment!
