Originally built in 1927 the General Francis Marion Hotel has been completely renovated and restored. It has been honored with many historic preservations awards and has AAA Three Diamond status. All rooms have high-speed internet access and toll-free local calls. Meeting facilities feature state-of-the-art presentation equipment and the hotel offers off-site fitness center privileges. The on-site restaurant/ The Black Rooster provides superb dining in a casual setting and the hotels Black Rooster lounge serves up appetizers and libations. Virginia Living magazine described the hotels 2006 rebirth; with a love of architecture and an eye for detail Owner Susie Ellis has personally supervised every aspect of the hotels 4 million dollar overhaul. With all new plumbing and wiring the rooms now number 36. In compliance with preservation standards all the old door facades still grace the halls. A subtle green/ gold/ and blue color scheme runs throughout the hotel but every room is individual containing slightly different furnishings and accents. The entire facility is smoke-free. The hotel is listed on the Virginia and National Registers of Historic Places. TRI-Bristol 59 Mi NE.Located in Historic Downtown Marion VA - off I-81 Exit 45

Charming hotel!

This hotel has a lot of character and the room we stayed in was perfect. It's a little small, but everything was clean and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful.

Quaint, Comfortable Hotel in a Beautiful Little Town

We loved the General Francis Marion Hotel in Marion, Virginia! It was built in 1927, we were told as we checked in. We appreciated the quaintness of it; the cleanliness was outstanding; the Black Rooster restaurant on the ground level floor was great, too! When we had difficulty finding channels on our TV, the young woman who checked us in came up to our room within minutes to help us. A free breakfast, a delightful Main Street, and lots of other restaurants nearby made this hotel a place we would like to come back to in the future.

Dining tip: In Hotel

The Black Rooster Restaurant offered nice, quiet dinner dining. Two tables front the street, so you can look over Main Street as you dine. Decent wine by the glass or bottle, house-made pecan butter, a truly delicious & unusual house salad, & great service made for an enjoyable dining experience. A nice FREE breakfast was also available in the Black Rooster for hotel guests.

Great getaway for nature lovers!

Stayed here in order to explore the nearby State Parks. The location was fantastic. A more workable A/C unit would have made the stay perfect. Dining locations nearby were limited. The hotel staff were wonderful!

Emergency stay due to family death

The room was very clean and comfortable. Was a little small but it works for 1 or 2 people. You could not beat the location, right downtown. Staff was exceptional. Very helpful in every way. It has a restaurant which has excellent food. This would be my first choice if I stayed in Marion again.

Great find

My wife and I were returning from vacation in Nashville and needed to break our trip up. Several of the surrounding cities with more hotel choices/chains were expensive or booked due to an event and boy are we glad we passed on those. This place was so charming and well remodeled (you can read about the history of this old gem and the long history of its founder in Marion, the Lincoln family-no relationship to the President of course). The room was adequate but I think what we might rank lower on a survey we enjoyed the most. For example the room may be a bit on the small side and there may not be a fitness center and pool for amenities, but we loved the quaint size and the attached restaurant (Black Rooster) was superb. The restaurant was aces and the staff was fantastic. We met the chef who brought food right from the farm to our table. It was effortless and ushered in the welcome of a nice small town community to the end of our trip. We couldn't have asked for anything more and the hotel staff was very accommodating. There is also some real charm to the architecture and balcony that overlooks the main road. Highly recommended!

Back in time...

Had been following the "Crooked Road" music trail in SW Virginia - decided to stay here in this hotel on last night as a special treat after all the "regular" motel chains, etc... Early '20's charm nestled in the middle of a charming town - Marion, Va., everything about the hotel made the early days of automobile travel accommodations seem very real. The only surprise was that our single bed room was very small - though the bathroom was spacious and modern. It was a great night's stay, with plenty of interesting shops to browse out the front door on main street. Great experience for the price. Would stay there again. Enriched our trip.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Local distiller has shop across the street - makes his own corn whiskey - affable host and interesting store with local memorabilia, crafts and momentos.

Last minute stop on a roadtrip.

On a roadtrip to Asheville, we needed to stop for the night. Not wanting to book ahead (and trying to go as far as possible), we booked a room 45 minutes before arrival at the General Francis Marion. Hotels are pretty scarce and low-budget on this stretch of highway so this was a true gem. There was plenty of parking in the back and the staff was very friendly. The room was well appointed and the bath modern and nearly as large as the room itself. The staff gave us a tour of the facilities - and we learned a bit about the history of the building. The room also included a simple breakfast. It was a bit more than the basic hotels that dot the rural highways but well work it!

Beautiful renovated Historic Landmark Hotel

Must carry luggage up steps for any entrance. Rooms clean with good beds. No hairdryer. Breakfast was pitiful. Unfortunately this is the best Marion ,Virginia has to offer.

Neat small hotel in a small town

This hotel is a clean and comfortable place to stay along I-81. The wifi is greatly improved since our last stay here 2 years ago. The Black Rooster restaurant did not have vegetarian entrees as they used to have but the chef made a special delicious meal upon request.

Dining tip: In Hotel

There are few restaurants in Southwest VA that offer vegetarian options. The Black Rooster provided such a meal at special request.
