Can't judge the book by it's cover

We visited Harrisonburg to spend some time with family. While there, we decided to stay at a place with a pool for the kids and a hot tub for the wife and me. When searching, we came upon the Holiday Inn in the 'Burg. The photos were impressive, the price was right, and with the long time rep of the Holiday Inn, we couldn't go wrong. That's what I 'thought'. Check-in was average, by a young person who really didn't like her job or shift. When asked how to get to our room, I think I was asking too much. The elevator was noisy and stinky. The ice machine on our floor was broken. Our room was nice looking, but needed some updating. The heater/air conditioner was the in the room and was soooo noisy. It came on every 15 minutes, and was especially noticeable through the evening when sleeping. The bathroom could use a fan, as when we took showers it steamed up the whole room. The beds were the smallest I've ever experienced in a hotel. Usually when getting a room with double beds they would be queens, our's were fulls. The pool area was very dark, to the point that we felt it was unsafe. If your child was at one end, and you were at another, you could see them very well. It was warm and didn't smell well either. In the photos, you see a smaller 'pool' that you would assume is a hot-tub. It turned out to be a 'kiddie-pool'. Very disappointing. Half of the room was divided with poor amenities. It was not very pleasurable. OK, now the worse part of the trip... During the first evening we slept, at around 3AM, we experienced someone kicking our door and trying to get in. He continued kicking and slamming the door until I got up and told him he had the wrong door (thinking he was drunk or high and thinking we were his room). He did go away, but we all were a bit shaken up and the children were scared. We called down to the desk to report this, and they said they would look into it. The next day, we followed up and they said they didn't find anyone. The staff didn't seem concerned that this happened, and was not very apologetic to us. I know it probably wasn't their fault or doing of this gentleman, but you would think they would make sure we were OK. You choose a hotel for good rest and pleasure. This Holiday Inn feel short of this for our two day stay. It is certain the we will not choose them to stay again.

Convenient, but grimy.

The hotel's location was convenient. I never really saw the staff, so I can't comment on how they were. The downside is that because the hotel is so old, there's a lot of grime and stale cigarette smoke smell that no amount of dedicated cleaning (or pretty redecorating) can get out. The ancient AC and shower didn't quite function right. Every part of the building shows its age. Overall, it was nice enough for the price, but I'd warn anyone with allergies to stay away.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

For the non-family crowd: Hit up a downtown bar called Jack Brown's. It's tiny, crowded, and hard to find parking, but the extensive beer list, great burgers, cute/kind/knowledgeable bartenders, and friendly patrons make it worth visiting as often as possible. It is the perfect hole in the wall.

Very Enjoyable Stay!

Stayed in the executive suite. It was incredibly comfortable and clean. No complaints whatsoever! Used the pool quite a bit and that too was clean and a very comfortable temperature. The front desk attendants were super nice and helpful. They directed us to an AWESOME restaurant in the area (union square) and even warmed up our favorite oatmeal for us in their microwave! :)

Standard Holiday Inn, no surprises.

Indoor pool is nice touch, but request a room not facing it. Posted pool hours are 9A-10P but kids were having a good time and yelling in it at 7:30AM until 11PM. If you want to sleep during those times, good luck.

must have been an off day...

This must have been an off day for these folks. We got there, were pointed in the general direction of the stairs (elevator broken), and found that we were taking the wrong stairs. The person who told us which way to go watched us take the wrong stairs and didn't say anything. Hmm. All interactions with the female front desk clerk were crisp and just not very friendly. Also, the TV had really bad reception. This hotel would be my last choice, going forward.

Wouldn't go back

The hotel seemed rather old and shabby. One of the towels in our room had a smudge on it that looked like a dirty hand-print and the upholstered chair had several thin, vertical, dark stains in the middle of the seat. We had a pool-view room which meant we heard the noise until 10. The restaurant had a bar and restaurant, but due to staff shortages it had to close early. There were other restaurants in the area, but the hotel required several left hand turns, one of which was on an easy-to-miss access road so we decided it was too much of a hassle to go out.

Scary, but convenient

When I arrived at the Holiday Inn, I wasn't even sure it was open! It looked like an abandon building. I went inside and it was very nice and a very nice lady explained that it had been a bad winter. I then changed and went to the gym. the equipment was terrible, one machine was out of order. The TV was very outdated and the remote did not work so I had to climb on a chair to adjust the tv. Also it said in the hotel information that the hotel had recently been renovated. It did not look that way at all. the ice machine was broken also and had I wanted ice I would have to go to another floor. Staff was very nice and the rooms were clean.
