Area description
With a long-standing reputation as a family-friendly destination, since the 2002 Olympics, Salt Lake City has added "world-class" to its internationally known attributes. Olympic facilities, new restaurants and shops and a light rail system have further enhanced the city's well-established appeal as a state capitol, home to the historic Temple Square, gateway to great skiing, and of course, home of Utah Jazz basketball. While Temple Square remains Salt Lake's biggest attraction, the city thrives as a cultural center, supporting one of the nation's finest regional symphony orchestras, world-class opera, dance and theater companies, and a myriad of art galleries. Salt Lake City also serves as the gateway to ten national parks, including Bryce, Zion and Yellowstone - all within a day's drive.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Short walk to tracks and can go just about anywhere, and Tryangles my favorite gay bar is within walking distance. Seems that there are a lot of LGBT folks who stay there. A great place to host gatherings.

Turn off the heat

We had to change rooms three times. The first room was 84 degrees and in three hours it was 86. This was with the air conditioner going. We complained and was moved to a room across the hall. It was 77 degrees in this room. Complained again and was moved five floors down into another room. This room was okay and we had no other problems.

Disappointed in the service

We were excited for our girls getaway in Salt Lake and got an awesome deal on a hotel room. We booked a room for 3 nights at the Red Lion. The location was great and the rooms were very comfortable. At the last minute, we had another friend decide to join us. We arrived late on a Thursday night and requested a roll away bed. There was a home school conference going on at the hotel and there were no roll aways avaliable that night. Totally understandable on short notice. The next morning I requested that if there were any beds avaliable, to please reserve them for us for the next two nights. I was assured by the staff that there would be a bed avaliable and they would have the housekeeping staff bring one to our room that day. We returned to our room that night to no roll away bed. I once again called the front desk and requested a bed. Once again I was told that one would be brought up right away. It never happened. The next morning I went down to the front desk and requested a bed. Again I was assured that they would bring one to the room. I informed the front desk staff of the problems that we had had the night before and I was told that the problem would be rectified and we would have the extra bed that night. Wrong again. We stayed there for 3 nights and never got the roll away that was requested multiple times. Very disappointed in the service. I would have been a lot more understanding if in the beginning we had been told that getting the extra bed would not be possible and then alternate arrangments could have been made. I will not be booking rooms at this hotel again.

Weekend Performance

We stayed at the Red Lion while we were in Salt Lake for the weekend, performing at Abravanel Hall. The location is perfect--very convenient to downtown. The staff was excellent and friendly. We had reserved a standard king-size; when we arrived, none was available. They immediately put us in a suite at no extra cost. The view of the mountains is beautiful. Definitely staying at the Red Lion again.

Thai Siam, a little Thai restaurant, is located at 1435 S. State Street, just a couple miles from the hotel. EXCELLENT food (especially the yellow curry!), friendly staff, and warm atmosphere.

Great location for walking downtown, and the hotel offered a shuttle to downtown locations if they weren't too busy with airport shuttles.

Comfortable with a great view.

The room was clean, a nice amount of space. Shower was great. Good access off two freeways. Staff was friendly. Only issue was in the morning about 7-8:AM the cleaning staff would start their shift and would hold conversations down the halls with each other. This was loud and echo'd into the room. If I had planned to stay longer I would have talked to the hotel management. I stayed two nights. The only other disappointment was the restaurant, not very good and a long wait for service, bill, etc. if you are staying and intend to explore SLC this hotel a wonderful value! Clean, comfortable and easy access!
