Stunning hotel, NO A/C
On my way home from a trip to Reno for a business convention, I contacted this travel site and had them set me up with a King suite in the hotel. This is a beautiful old place and I would have given it 4 stars except for this: after checking in, and going to our room, I set the air conditioning to high. Hours later it was still horribly hot in there, and I called to the front desk to tell them it wasn't working. The desk clerk said that, yes, the air conditioning in the entire building was out, and that the maintenance crew had worked on it but that we would just have to deal with it that night..I asked if there were any fans available, and they said no, they were all being used by other customers. Having had no sleep, my business partner and I asked for a refund the next morning and were told we had to speak with management. **I upgraded from one star to two because management did call today to offer her apologies and offer a complementary nights stay for my business partner and myself. She was very pleasant and concerned. I will do another review after my next stay.***

Good luck finding the entrance to the Macaroni Grill, which is attached to the hotel. We gave up and went down the block to Squatters, which had good burgers and beer.

Consider another hotel unless you like "OLD"
The lobby is pretty and that's about it! This is a very old hotel and yes a historic landmark. If you like this type of hotel...just to warn you..No hot water for a shower for two days. The TV had on station. My room had no hairdryer. The toilet made a flushing type of noise every 1/2 hr. You hear the street/outside noise at night. The room was the size of a closet. The smallest room I have ever been in for a hotel. The bathroom was tiny and the sink was lop sided. I could not place anything on the sink because it would slide right off. The hotel was completely sold out so I was not able to change rooms. I woud never stay here again and I wish I didn't prepay because I would have checked out and found a better hotel. There was also broken glass on the floor of the bathroom. I've been camping and have had better accomodations than this place.

To clarify, WiFi is available, $9.95
Overall, the hotel is very nice. My room was small, but perfectly adequate. The furnishings were nice, and it was very clean. The alarm clock was very nice - the sort you can even plug an iPod into. One oddity was that it was very warm - I've never walked into a hotel room in winter and not been freezing (because the heat has been off). I couldn't seem to figure out how to turn the heat down to the point where it wouldn't immediately kick back on once it turns itself off. There was also a space heater available in the room (although I can't imagine anyone needing it!). There is no free parking. The options are to park in one of the pay lots nearby ($5 for 10 hour increments), or use the valet parking ($17/night). If I had realized this, I probably would have picked another nearby hotel (some downtown SLC hotels do have their own free lots). Also, the "wireless internet" amenity is something that is available (for an extra charge of $9.95/day), but is not included.

Small, elegant, friendly
Very slightly off the beaten track but still in range of many fine eateries and attractions. The "European" term did refer to the small size of my room, which true to type, had the basin in the room proper, and the shower/toilet in a separate space behind an old fashioned door. All was spotless, the bed comfortable, the radio had a dock for my iPod, lots of TV options and strong clear WiFi signal throughout. Fitness center small but well appointed with individual TV screens, lobby elegant with complimentary coffee--no tea bags alas. Not all rooms overlook a view; I got a rooftop. The staff is absolutely first-class. Be aware that you will be charged a $15.00 "restoration fee" each night; to me the ambiance is well worth it.

The hotel is flanked by two restaurants; one is a chain, the other an independent. Tried the latter and it is very good indeed. Across the street is an outstanding, ecologically sensitive pub with delicious food that is locally grown and produced. Other fine independents are close by along with a lot of the upscale chains.

My Experience
Nice place, wonderful historical building, but very basic with regards to amenities. They lock the doors at 12:00 midnight and they are slow to come open the door. Not much warning about that. Also, there is no food service whatsoever in the morning for at least a block and a half away.

Cute hotel
Cute boutique hotel only a block away from the Salt Palace Convention Center. Only 1 old elevator that can only handle maybe up to 4 passengers. Room was clean, but the floors were creaking. Overall it worked for me.

Besides the steakhouse and Macaroni Grill downstairs, you are in downtown so plenty of places to eat within a few blocks, including the Gateway Mall and Farmer's Market (on Saturday).

Great Location for the price!
This Hotel was really nice, 100 Years old, refurbed and friendly staff, rooms were small, but the BEST bed I ever slept in. I was there on business, so the small room was not a big deal. The Hotel was close to nice night life, and restaraunts. I would definately stay there again when I go back to Salt Lake. Free wireless was nice too.
