Fun Texas getaway

This is an historic hotel. While the details are quaint, they are not always that comfortable. We were kindly upgraded to a suite one of the nights we stayed there. The standard room bed was more comfortable than the iron bed in the suite. We were there in mid-December and one of the lobbies was undergoing renovation. I'm sure it should be lovely when completed. All in all, the location is great and I would recommend the hotel to anyone on holiday in San Antonio.

Thanksgiving Weekend in San Antonio

All in all we had a very positive experience with this hotel. Pros: it's across the street from the Alamo; two blocks from the heart of the Riverwalk; easy access to the highway for the rental car; valet parking; Wi-fi was free, easy to access, and dependable; hotel staff service was EXCELLENT in all respects; classic, old-time hotel (still had four full size phone booths in the lobby#; beautiful old-time dining room; food was good; beautiful pool and separate outdoor garden and courtyard. Cons: if you want the latest and greatest in decor and certain amenities, this hotel is not for you; you have to appreciate certain elements of days gone by; most rooms have double beds #not queens or kings); air conditioning in the room was difficult to control, sometimes it became too warm while other times it was too cold; rooms show signs of wear and tear and deferred maintenance; we understand there is a renovation plan in the works; one of the wall sockets did not work as another example. However, the room and hotel were clean. If you can get past the "datedness" of the rooms, then I think you will enjoy your stay. If you can't, you probably should stay elsewhere (like in one of the nearby "chain" hotels).

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Alamo is worth seeing, and the entrance is less than a block away. We also walked to the Alamodome (15 minutes) to see a UTSA football game Saturday afternoon.

Nice weekend getaway!

My husband and I stayed here for an evening and have a wonderful stay. The hotel is beautiful and we will stay there again. But be warned that the rooms are pretty snug--like a European room.

Disappointing trip

Had booked this trip a couple of months before we went; Went by train for the first time; when we got to San Antonia at 9:20 pm on the 15th, the San .Antonio Spurs game was just over with them being the NBA Champions. (congratulations). Unfortunetly, we could not get a taxi to take us to the Menger hotel. After calling the cab co. several time, and waiting on the street corner for over 2 hours, they called back and said they could not help us as the town was in a gridlock because of the traffic. We called the hotel to tell them we were there, but, unable to get to the hotel. Had to stay buy a room at the hotel next to train station. Therefore, we lost one night that had been paid for in advance. When we got to the Menger the next day, things were back to normal. Upset that we had to pay for 3 nights at the Menger, but only stayed 2 nights. Would recommend the Menger hotel, as it is in the center of everything and in walking distance of the sights.

less than wonderful stay

Stayed at this hotel to attend a conference. Staff on arrival was not very pleasant but the worst was yet to come. Room was cold and smelled musty. The shower went from hot to warm to cold-seemed like that was how it cycled. Location was great since it was near main attractions but that was the only plus. On check out the man at the front desk was probably the most rude individual I have ever encountered. I will be telling everyone I know to NOT stay there!

Wonderful Hotel!

This hotel is fantastic! It is within walking distance to everything in downtown San Antonio, including the Riverwalk, making it easy to get to the main tourist areas from the hotel. They offer valet service (for $28 a day) which made it easy if we wanted to take our car to a destination. The staff was super friendly, the room service was great, and the hotel is beautiful! The only thing "wrong" is that the normal rooms are a little small (but not so small that we felt cramped). Also, being an old hotel, you can hear the water running when the people around you take a shower or flush the toilet. But, overall, this hotel was perfect for our vacation and made our vacation a blast! I would highly recommend this hotel to anybody!

large historic hotel

large historic hotel combines some old world charm with a few anomalies (small dated bathrooms - no fridge in room) and a labyrinth of annexes than can make finding your room hard ( and in our case particularly so, since we were sent entirely the wrong way a by the check in desk).
