everything went very smooth ck in great. front desk very sweet. our room faced the alamo and street nice view but a little noisy thin walls. We spent New Years Eve in the bar in was nice not to crowded . The only thing I can't stand seeing CHILDREN IN A BAR! COME ON PARENTS YOU JUST DON'T DO THAT! They shouldn't be allowed I don;'t care what day it is no children....I actually saw a women introduce her daughter to a total sleezey guy...OMG! Are you that hard up for a drink! Other than that it was nice.

Historic Should Not Mean Antiquated
This hotel is not the place to stay if quality is important. Hotel room was the size of a small college dorm room from the 1980s. The room had a full-sized bed that probably hadn't been replaced in the lat 20 years. The bathroom had ants streaming from the sink to the top of the bathroom mirror. The water in the shower went from cold to scalding hot without even changing the temperature. Upon checkout, I mentioned to the desk clerk that the air conditioning should be checked in the room because it was very stuffy and the air never cycled on. His response was that the management didn't feel the air conditioning was needed that night because the weather was nice and cool outside. Really? Since when does the management determine that air conditioning should be an additional perk...especially in Texas? I DO NOT recommend staying at the property ever!!

Lovely Hotel with Lots of History
In spite of the mix-up at check in (I needed a room with 2 beds and was originally put in a room with only 1), the service at this hotel was quite nice. I did think it was a little ridiculous to charge $25/day for hotel valet, but it was well worth it not to have to search for parking on our own. The hotel's location is ideal for anyone in town for a little history or a taste of the San Antonio night-life, plus the hotel has plenty of history on its own. I did not experience one of the hauntings I used to hear The Menger was famous for, but my experience was probably better for it. :) All in all, this was a good place to stay.

Sightseeing tip:
Short walk from hotel
The Alamo is right next door, but if you want stunning photos and a chance to capture the front facade without other tourists blocking the view, make it a point to stop by at night on the way back from the Riverwalk. You'll get the best pictures that way, and it's convenient on the return trip.

menger hotel
The location of the hotel was amazing. We were close to the market square, the Alamo, the river walk, the mall, and lots of tourist attractions. The hotel was not very accomidating. There wasn't even soap for us in the restroom. The room was very small and the a/c did not work very well. If you are looking for location vs. Accomidation this is the hotel for you. I personally would not return. The hotel was creepy and everyone kept reminding me that it was haunted. There are too many other hotels in the area that may have been nicer and just as convienent. I'm glad I experienced the hotel and it's old time atmosphere, but once is enough for me.

Mixed thoughts
Stayed overnight per recommendation of brother who recently stayed here. [...]The hotel would get 5 stars for location alone -- directly across from the Alamo and just a couple blocks from the Riverwalk. Would also receive 5 stars based on historical value -- the lobby and hallways are filled with all sorts of historical artifacts and a real pleasure for anyone remotely interested in history.Unfortunately, the rest of the hotel left quite a bit to be desired. While the room was large by today's standards (had the room with 2 double beds), the rest of the amenities were somewhat lacking. Faucet only trickled hot water (though shower wasn't a problem). We were only supplied with soap and body lotion... no shampoo/conditioner. Not a huge deal for myself, but some may find annoying. Bed & sheets were clean but the rest of the room was rather dated (then again, one could say this is part of the 'charm' and history of the hotel). Balcony doors weighed a ton and made a horrendous noise when opening/closing -- neighbors door woke us up both at night and in the early morning.... not to mention ours didn't lock (somewhat unnerving as I had a laptop/camera/etc in the room). Tried the vending machines on 4 separate floors and they were either completely sold out or the bill reader wasn't working. Only other option was the $8 bottle of water in the room, head downstairs to the overpriced bar, or head to the shop across the street.Parking was by valet only and is $25/day + taxes, though does allow in/out privileges. Decided to park in an adjacent parking garage (no in/out privileges) and was only $18 for 24 hours. All that being said, the hotel more than sufficed for my needs and would stay again. If you're simply looking for a great location in the middle of everything or for the added historical value of the building, this is a great place. If you're more interested in the hotel amenities, look elsewhere.

Historic Hotel
Very historic and very convenient to downtown attractions. Our first room had very poor ventilation. The staff was very friendly and aloowed us to change rooms. Shower went from hot to cold to hot. Probably just a very old boiler system.
