1960s flair with tiki bar and modern conveniences on the River Walk
The El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel opened in 1962 and remains the same as the first day it opened; sparkly chic and surrounded by a lush tropical landscape. A recent multi-million dollar renovation updated furniture and amenities. There are 306 guest rooms and 11 suites. Several dining and libation options are in-house and kids under 12 eat free. Wireless Internet is free throughout the hotel and a business center offers several services. Guests swim in the heated, outdoor pool or work out at the fitness center.
Highlights
  • Tiki Bar serves top-shelf tequilas and rums on its riverside patio; happy hour runs from 5-7:30pm
  • Latin and American cuisine is served at Mango's, kids under 12 eat free
  • Go for coffee drinks, rich baked goods, or smoothies and fresh fruit at Expresso Coffee Bar
  • Heated, outdoor pool, and 3,000-square-foot fitness center
  • 15 meeting rooms offer a combined 37,000 sq. ft. of meeting space. Groups of 10 to 1,000 can be accommodated.
Rooms

The 306 guest rooms and 11 suites have been recently redecorated in a contemporary style with bright accents of chili and tasteful dark wood. Views may be overlooking the San Antonio River, swimming pool or glittering downtown skyline. Free high-speed wireless Internet is available in all rooms throughout the El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel. All rooms are equipped with coffee makers, hair dryers, an iron and ironing board, telephones with two lines and data ports, and full-size desks. A flat-screen color television with an expanded cable lineup is also in each room. Guests choose a king or two full beds. Suites have raised platform beds.

Features

The presidential suite was often occupied by President Lyndon B. Johnson and was dubbed "The Texas White House" during that era. Guests go for coffee drinks, rich baked goods or smoothies and fresh fruit at Expresso Coffee Bar. Kids under 12 eat free with their parents at the in-house Latin-inspired restaurant, Mango's. The Tiki Bar serves top-shelf tequilas and rums on its riverside patio; happy hour runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Toucans are seen at the aviary. Guests swim in the heated, outdoor pool or work out at the 3,000-square-foot STRIVE Fitness Studio. A business center offers faxing, copying and printing services. The El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel has 15 meeting rooms that offer a combined 37,000 square feet of meeting space. Groups of 10 to 1,000 can be accommodated.

Scared out of our minds

This hotel put us in a room that connected to another room's balcony. Our window was directly part of this balcony and there was a door from our room to balcony but when you open it another door was there but could only be opened from balcony (from outside). Well it was myself and another female staying in the room. At about 2 in the morning we are awoken to tons of people partying on balcony and hitting our sliding door window and attempting to open the connecting door. It was awful. The room was really small, the toilet didn't flush all the way, the room was dirty, the elevator one night was filled with water which appeared to be coming from ceiling??? It's on the Riverwalk but at the very end- never would I suggest walking that tail end at night. The cleaning staff were super loud talking to each other in morning woke us up with their yelling. I truly hated this hotel. Just gross and did not feel safe at all there. Never again. I don't understand how this has ever received 4 stars?? I never write reviews but if any other ladies are traveling by themselves do not stay here.

Not a four star hotel

We booked because of location and 4 Star rating. Not 4 Star, only Breakfast available. Snack/drink booth available all day, most of night. Carpeting needs updating. A long walk to town. But staff was very helpful.

Lot's of excercise walking everywhere

The hotel was decent - but not what we expected from the reviews online. The location was about a mile & a half from the main riverwalk restaurant/nightlife area so we had to walk alot the first day. Only stayed 1 night - moved to a different hotel that was closer after the 1st night. Staff was very friendly - but hotel had an "older" feel and was not what we were looking for...

A Little Let Down

The check in was fine, but was more worn around the edges than the photo's showed. Bathroom was very small and couldn't believe the toilet was the low style with no tank and the long handle at the seat. Would have been nice to have a small Frig. as there was room for it. The location was O.K. as the River Boat Taxi's were easy to catch. For the price it was just average but at the most I would rat this a 3 star..

1st vaction as bf n gf

We arrived at the hotel checked in. We had booked a single queen bed and were told that they were booked and only had a double twin bed. We asked why? And were told that they only garantee room avaliabilty but not the type of room, disappointed at first the maneger compted our parking and breakfeast for our entire stay which was a value of 180 and told us they would have the type of room we reserved ready for us. The following day we moved to our queen size room which was a lot bigger and nicer and it was on the 6th floor. It is not close to the main plaza of the the river walk its about a 15 or 20 min walk we liked our stay and would definitely stay again

August in San Antonio

The staff was friendly and helpful from check in till check out. The building was old and worn out, it can be retro in style and still be updated to modern comforts. The hotel is about 50 years old and looks every minute of it. It was 4 star price with 2 star hotel

Last minute get a way

The hotel staff was great. The hotel had a cozy feel to it. I only wish the Tiki Bar had stayed open later. By the time we came from seeing the local attractions and was ready to relax by the pool the bar was closed. All the brouchers stated it would close at 12-midnight but it was closed by 10:00
