The El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel opened in 1962 and remains the same as the first day it opened; sparkly chic and surrounded by a lush tropical landscape. A recent multi-million dollar renovation updated furniture and amenities. There are 306 guest rooms and 11 suites. Several dining and libation options are in-house and kids under 12 eat free. Wireless Internet is free throughout the hotel and a business center offers several services. Guests swim in the heated, outdoor pool or work out at the fitness center.
Rooms

The 306 guest rooms and 11 suites have been recently redecorated in a contemporary style with bright accents of chili and tasteful dark wood. Views may be overlooking the San Antonio River, swimming pool or glittering downtown skyline. Free high-speed wireless Internet is available in all rooms throughout the El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel. All rooms are equipped with coffee makers, hair dryers, an iron and ironing board, telephones with two lines and data ports, and full-size desks. A flat-screen color television with an expanded cable lineup is also in each room. Guests choose a king or two full beds. Suites have raised platform beds.

Property features

The presidential suite was often occupied by President Lyndon B. Johnson and was dubbed "The Texas White House" during that era. Guests go for coffee drinks, rich baked goods or smoothies and fresh fruit at Expresso Coffee Bar. Kids under 12 eat free with their parents at the in-house Latin-inspired restaurant, Mango's. The Tiki Bar serves top-shelf tequilas and rums on its riverside patio; happy hour runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Toucans are seen at the aviary. Guests swim in the heated, outdoor pool or work out at the 3,000-square-foot STRIVE Fitness Studio. A business center offers faxing, copying and printing services. The El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel has 15 meeting rooms that offer a combined 37,000 square feet of meeting space. Groups of 10 to 1,000 can be accommodated.

Dump

My reservation was for two full beds. I was given a queen and had to pay $10 for rollaway and had to ask 3 times for it. Building is super old, and Riverwalk is a misnomer, it should be renamed river. It's not in the river walk section.

Ok for one night

Location is kinda far from hub of river walk. Hotel is ok. Air conditioning was broken. Staff are ok or good depending on whom you interact. Parking expensive.

Anniversary trip

Hotel was nice and had the retro vibe we love.... but the shower was broken... they fixed it the first evening. Ice maker by our room was broken...Then the bartender seemed as though she had no experience and promptly spilled a tray of drinks on me and soaked my wifes phone. Then our room was directly across the hall from a banquet room of cheering people who also used bathrooms located next to our room. The noise went on til 1am Saturday night and 11pm Sunday night. So our stay wasn't exactly as good as I had hoped.

Location is Subjective

If you research online, you will find that most agree that this hotel is not close to the touristy area of the river. However, I think it is perfectly located between the “touristy” area of the Riverwalk and the trendy Pear Brewery area. It is about a 10 minute walk away from the “touristy” areas (If you aren’t a walker, simply take a river taxi).

Decent for money

Hotel lobby was decent. Lobby has some parakeets and turtle for kids to keep occupied for some time. Lady in the lobby coffee shop was nice enough to make some hot milk for our 4year old as she doesn't drink cold. Room was small with king bed occupying lost of it. It had a small fridge and writing desk that occupied space more than providing use. Air conditioning was broken and wouldn't adjust to temp. Would only keep blowing same temperature cold air all night. I had to switch off once it gets cold and switch on again. When i called the front desk, the lady told to switch it off for few minutes and switch it on, which obviously didn't work. Parking was $17-seriously? Even though hotel was in an area away from downtown. Hotel is definitely right in front of entrance to river walk but way far from the real river walk hotels etc. free wifi is a joke- terribly slow and was unusable. Overall if you just wanna go take a nap and leave it's decent as it is close to downtown in 20 minute walk but if you want nice hotel choose something else.

Disappointing Location

The location was disappointing - it was right on the river walk but all of the attractions are much further down and quite a hike. I would recommend staying at somewhere such as the Holiday Inn further down the riverwalk. The bar in the hotel was pretty good and reasonably priced. The rooms had weird Air Conditioners that didn't keep up well. The room felt muggy. The bathroom was below standards in being clean.

Return to San Antonio

We required a decent place to stay during a trip to San Antonio for our granddaughter's graduation. Although the building and décor reminded us of the seventies, the staff was efficient, polite and helpful. The hotel and our room was clean with comfortable beds. Out of the two elevators one was out of order the entire time we stayed. The hotel is right next to the river walk and has views of it from some of the rooms, however you have to check in early if you want a chance to get one. The walk to where the restaurants and shops are located on the river walk takes about twenty minutes. A coffee maker is in the room. The breakfast at the hotel restaurant was so-so.
