Bold contemporary designs with features like hardwood and black granite floors, exposed pipes, and artwork by Arthur Meyerson ensure that Hotel Derek in Houston has a unique ambience compared with more understated accommodations. Drenched in southern hospitality, the AAA Four-Diamond award-winning restaurant serves hearty dishes like the Hangover Burger and Inverted Grilled Cheese, while chic cocktails and craft beers are available evenings at the bar. The only boutique hotel inside the Houston 610 Loop, splash out on a Penthouse Suite for floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the Galleria, or try the urban Loft for a seating area and king-sized bed.

Hotel Derek - Review by Jos

My Stay here at Hotel Derek had its ups and downs. Being that it has a 4 star rating I expected more from this flashy corner street spot. First the "nay say": They charge $19 per day to use their parking garage which is valley parking only (tips requested every time you pick up/drop off your car). So if your driving expect your bill to jump $20-30/day if you don't want to walk to you car from some random public parking lot near by. That kind of tab is enough to bump any 4 star hotel into an overpriced category. The room was beautiful till I decided to get ready to go out. Bring your own lighting because there is not enough to iron or even fix your own hair. Don't even think about touching anything besides the bathroom condiments. Go to any convenience store and multiply the price by 3 and that how much they charge for their food/room accommodations (don't get me started on the liquor cabinet). That's way Hotel Derek! Milk those ignorant money tossers! As far as good stuff goes: The staff were very nice and accommodating. They will go out of their way to make your stay an enjoyable experience if you let them know your needs. If your lucky you can get a room with a great view. The room was very well kept and they have a style and feel that's quite enjoyable. They have really good water heaters. A word to the Hotel Management: Do something about your parking options. No body likes being forced to spend 20-30$/per day just because they have a car.

Money-saving tip: In Hotel

Unless your fond of using taxi's or you know the local bus routes plan on spending $20-30 per day for valley parking and tips.

ok!

It was fine. The true test for me is always the bed and bed was not really four star and neither were the sheets. Besides that decor was good and the room was clean and roomy. One other problem was that I had to stand in a line to check out but all the employees were helpful and polite.

Poor weekend experience

Checked in 3:30 PM Saturday, August 13. Full house. With no mention at check-in, we were shunted to the wheel-chair accessible room (1005). One pillow, two (small) towels and one bath sheet, burnt out light bulbs left in the hanging penant light, one robe. Clearly the room supplies had been stripped in this neglected room. Twenty minutes later, we got housekeeping to resupply the room. Too late for us to demand another room since we were headed out to a wedding. Sad experience. I remember the Derek on many previous occasions when the hotel staff provided a flawless experience. Hope the management gets it together.

Not Impressed

This hotel is in a great location, but besides that, I felt it was over priced, in every other area. The rooms are nothing special at all, and very small. You get way overcharged for parking more than one car, so make sure everyone rides together.

Don't pay for extras

The service was very basic. The room was attractive and clean, with above-average bedding. We agree with other reviewers about the mandatory valet parking--there's no way I'm paying an extra $19 a night for parking when I can park on the street three blocks away. So we hoofed it to and from the car just to avoid the swarm of valets. Not the best experience. Also--beware the $7 bottle of Fiji on the desk that is actually a stray from the minibar and not a gift. Hidden charges all over this place.

Shortest King Sized Bed EVER!

My feet hung off the edge of the supposed King-sized bed. It was very wide but much, much too short. The noise from the nearby freeway was very loud. I am surprised there were not double pained windows considering the hotel is across the street from a very busy freeway. Also the drapery could have blocked out more light.

Hotel Review

Nice room and nicely located in the Galleria in Houston. Seems to cater to the party crowd as we heard noise in the hall until 3am. General location is good during the day but noisy at night. Any hotel of this price range that offers 'intimacy' packs for 8.00 kinda tells you what kind of crowd they typically get. I wouldn't bring my kids but probably would bring my ... ;-)

tired makeover

I will start with the negatives. If the rooms matched up with the lobby it would have been great. However as with most of these makeover hotels the room itself remains a poorly disguised holiday inn and an old one at that. The hotel is very noisy from the traffic on the interstate to the guests it attracts ( I was there from Friday to Monday). The pillows are hard as rocks and between the road noise and that it makes it very hard to get a good nights sleep. The pluses are the price and location. It is a bargain hotel and its proximity to Houston shopping is great.
