Driskill Hotel in Austin
Rose Oct 12, 2009
Exceptional service: front desk helpful and friendly, car valet service quick. Bed linens were super: down pillows, faux fur ... throw, pillow-top mattress, responsive a/c and a ceiling fan. Bathroom was highly functional and toiletries best quality. Room very small, but can be dismissed with the reminder that this is a very old hotel. Even so, it had all the amenities needed, was very comfortable.

This was a perfect place to stay to check out the night life in austin and a UT game. The bar scene is right out the front ... door, but the hotel was still quiet in the rooms. The bar area is replete with friendly, knowledgeable bartenders, and friendly patrons. The restaurant food, and breakfast scene were terrific. Would absolutely stay here again.

"Deluxe Service"
Hard to Please Jul 31, 2009
We stayed on the 12th floor so had a special package that included a beer or wine each night at the bar and $25 credit ... towards breakfast. We did not avail ourselves of this every night/day but it was a nice incentive to try their bar/food services. Very pricey hotel but it was a special treat for ourselves. The staff were all very eager to please and any concern was promptly addressed.

The LBJ Museum is free and very interesting. There was a temporary exhibit about Moon exploration which was timely since the landing was July 20, 1969.

Excellent hotel, reasonable price
TravelsALot Jul 21, 2009
From the whiff of leather and mahogany when you first walk into The Driskill to the final "have a good day" from the staff ... holding the door as you leave, your stay will be phenomenal. Every guest is treated with the same deference. Every room is designed to be the utmost comfort and luxury for its size. We stayed in one of the historical rooms (not the smallest, not the largest) and it was perfect for two people. I have stayed in 5 star hotels across the US and Canada and by far, our room at The Driskill was the most comfortable I have been in. I wish I could say the same for when we left the hotel, but 6th Street in Austin is becoming increasingly dangerous. So if you stay, know that the bums will watch who walks out and they will be right there begging for money, cigarettes, alcohol and more. We were approached by 4 bums in less than 20 minutes of leaving the hotel. Unfortunately, The Driskill was there long before the bars, 24-hour mini-marts and tattoo parlors that draw out society's underbelly, so there is not much you can do about it. What is great is that if you exit the hotel near valet, not only will they hold the door like southern gentlemen, but they will flag you a cab and stay with you until you are safely on your way. The Driskill is in downtown so it is a breeze getting where you want to go in a short amount of time. Compared to other hotels in the city, the hospitality, history and amenities are far superior. The price is about the same as the Radisson or Hyatt.

The Driskill partners with sites like Orbitz so if you look, you can find amazing prices on their fabulous rooms. And no matter what you paid for it, you still get the world-class service.

Here are the GREATS: location, room size, in room amenities, atmosphere (old Texas look, feel) Now the EXCEPTIONALS: staff, ... bed, food @ 1886 Cafe (burger and 'hippy hollow' - breakfast), Scottish bartender at Driskell Bar, staff, and staff. Truly unique hotel, well worth the price; I've paid 2.5 times more at other hotels that couldn't hold a candle to Driskell

The hotel is on 6th Street--the famous music venue so everything is very easy to get to. Didn't notice any nightlife noise in my room even though it faced the street!
