Historic splendor meets big city entertainment

In the 1886, Jesse Lincoln Driskill, a wealthy cattle baron, businessman and civic leader, built a hotel to rival New York and Chicago. The Driskill remains a landmark of Texas hospitality, impressing visitors with a blend of old and new, antiques and state-of-the-art technology, modern and traditional architecture. Two hotel wings contain 189 rooms with fine antiques, marble from around the world and original oil paintings. This hotel is immediately breathtaking as guests enter the marble-floored lobby under a soaring, stained glass dome.

Highlights
  • Driskill Grill named one of the nation's top 25 hotel restaurants by ZAGAT
  • Complimentary wireless Internet
  • Massage services by appointment
  • Kids amenities
Location

The Driskill is located on 6th Street in downtown Austin.

Rooms

Old and new merge in The Driskill's rooms, with a blend of contemporary and historic art peppering the walls and custom, modern furnishings. Find a Victorian-style settee upholstered with modern graphic fabric and nailhead-trimmed leather furniture, a nod to Texas ranches. Many types of upscale rooms are available.

Features

The 24-hour Driskill Fitness Studio and Spa offers cardio equipment, steam rooms, showers and dressing rooms. Guests may book massage appointments by contacting the concierge.

The family-friendly hotel gives children a coloring book and complimentary cookies and milk from the café and bakery.

Complimentary wireless Internet access is available throughout the hotel. The hotel offers valet parking (fees apply).

Dining

Known as Austin's original socializing parlor, the 1886 Cafe & Bakery serves southwestern cuisine for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night meals.

The Driskill Grill, named one of the nation's top 25 hotel restaurants by ZAGAT, serves farm-to-table cuisine for dinner in an elegant setting. The Driskill Bar's low lighting creates an intimate atmosphere with comfy leather chairs, warm wood and, of course, cowhide.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Be sure to check out the fix price menu at some of the upscale restaurants, they are definitely worth the money. We ate at Ruth's Chris steakhouse and Chez Nous and thoroughly enjoyed both restaurants.

Vintage Texas. A+++

Here are the GREATS: location, room size, in room amenities, atmosphere (old Texas look, feel) Now the EXCEPTIONALS: staff, bed, food @ 1886 Cafe (burger and 'hippy hollow' - breakfast), Scottish bartender at Driskell Bar, staff, and staff. Truly unique hotel, well worth the price; I've paid 2.5 times more at other hotels that couldn't hold a candle to Driskell

Excellent hotel, reasonable price

From the whiff of leather and mahogany when you first walk into The Driskill to the final "have a good day" from the staff holding the door as you leave, your stay will be phenomenal. Every guest is treated with the same deference. Every room is designed to be the utmost comfort and luxury for its size. We stayed in one of the historical rooms (not the smallest, not the largest) and it was perfect for two people. I have stayed in 5 star hotels across the US and Canada and by far, our room at The Driskill was the most comfortable I have been in. I wish I could say the same for when we left the hotel, but 6th Street in Austin is becoming increasingly dangerous. So if you stay, know that the bums will watch who walks out and they will be right there begging for money, cigarettes, alcohol and more. We were approached by 4 bums in less than 20 minutes of leaving the hotel. Unfortunately, The Driskill was there long before the bars, 24-hour mini-marts and tattoo parlors that draw out society's underbelly, so there is not much you can do about it. What is great is that if you exit the hotel near valet, not only will they hold the door like southern gentlemen, but they will flag you a cab and stay with you until you are safely on your way. The Driskill is in downtown so it is a breeze getting where you want to go in a short amount of time. Compared to other hotels in the city, the hospitality, history and amenities are far superior. The price is about the same as the Radisson or Hyatt.

One of the highlights

Courteous, available staff. Ran into one of the housekeeping people on my floor, who addressed me and my wife (different last names) by names. The food was excellent and not over-priced. The rooms were very well equipped and we were spoiled in comfort. Right in the heart of sixth street, great music, awesome awesome atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

ANNIVERSARY

THIS WAS A FIRST CLASS EXPERIENCE FOR OUR ANNIVERSARY. THE ROOM WAS BETTER THAN I EXPECTED. I WAS HOPING THAT THE ROOM WOULD BE LARGE ENOUGH TO FEEL LIKE WE WERE NOT IN A CLOSET AND IT WAS. THE PRICE WAS GREAT FOR THE DAY WE SELECTED. PLAN TO RETURN AGAIN NEXT YEAR FOR THE SAME EXPERIENCE.

Austin Jewel

The location doesn't get any better - right off of 6th Street in the heart of Austin's entertainment district. We had no problem with noise; the beds are divinely comfortable. Beautiful furnishings, but the less expensive rooms are a bit small and the toiletries a bit skimpy. Staff are very courteous and friendly. Reserve early for brunch or expect to wait - lots of people come here to eat, not just hotel guests. It's a wonderful venue if you want to get away from the bland corporate hotel chain vibe - but it's not for everybody.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

You must go to the comedy/magic show at Esther's Follies on 6th Street - I go every time I get to Austin (at least annually) and I and my guests never fail to have the ultimate comedy experience.
