Historic splendor meets big city entertainment

In the 1886, Jesse Lincoln Driskill, a wealthy cattle baron, businessman and civic leader, built a hotel to rival New York and Chicago. The Driskill remains a landmark of Texas hospitality, impressing visitors with a blend of old and new, antiques and state-of-the-art technology, modern and traditional architecture. Two hotel wings contain 189 rooms with fine antiques, marble from around the world and original oil paintings. This hotel is immediately breathtaking as guests enter the marble-floored lobby under a soaring, stained glass dome.

Highlights
  • Driskill Grill named one of the nation's top 25 hotel restaurants by ZAGAT
  • Complimentary wireless Internet
  • Massage services by appointment
  • Kids amenities
Location

The Driskill is located on 6th Street in downtown Austin.

Rooms

Old and new merge in The Driskill's rooms, with a blend of contemporary and historic art peppering the walls and custom, modern furnishings. Find a Victorian-style settee upholstered with modern graphic fabric and nailhead-trimmed leather furniture, a nod to Texas ranches. Many types of upscale rooms are available.

Features

The 24-hour Driskill Fitness Studio and Spa offers cardio equipment, steam rooms, showers and dressing rooms. Guests may book massage appointments by contacting the concierge.

The family-friendly hotel gives children a coloring book and complimentary cookies and milk from the café and bakery.

Complimentary wireless Internet access is available throughout the hotel. The hotel offers valet parking (fees apply).

Dining

Known as Austin's original socializing parlor, the 1886 Cafe & Bakery serves southwestern cuisine for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night meals.

The Driskill Grill, named one of the nation's top 25 hotel restaurants by ZAGAT, serves farm-to-table cuisine for dinner in an elegant setting. The Driskill Bar's low lighting creates an intimate atmosphere with comfy leather chairs, warm wood and, of course, cowhide.

Great Hotel and Convenient Location

Only stayed here one night but our stay was nice. The hotel is a beautiful Austin landmark with lots of great history. Great downtown location. We did have a load noise interrup our sleep early in the morning but the manager seemed genuinely concerned about correcting the problem.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

No need for valet parking if your only parking overnight. We parked on the street near the hotel and were able to prepay at the automated meter machine for 3 hours for the next morning. We only spent $3 instead of $27.

Luxurious Getaway at standard rates

Staff was couteous, helpful and friendly, and made calls to pools and other venues and services on our behalf and were on first-name basis with all of them, indicating that the hotel was well-connected. I used the business area to print my boarding passes and stay connected and research venues in Austin. Bakery was decadently good. The room was spotless and elegant. I loved staying in a 125 year-old hotel that was so elegant and yet only a little more than staying at a chain. It was interesting just to walk around the hotel. The exercise area was spotless and had modern aerobic equipment, cable machines and free weights. Large second floor balcony was a great place on a warm spring evening to have a drink and watch the festivities on Sixth Street.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Many, many things to do in walking distance and/or take the Metro Bus. Even though 6th street was the nightlife district, the hotel was quiet. Lots of dining and shopping was quite nearby. The hotel also had a car available but we walked everywhere. The walking/cycling trail is minutes away and goes along Lady Bird Lake for miles.

Beautifully Texas

Gorgeous - absolutely a piece of Texas history in a fabulous location central to everything that is downtown Austin. Great service except in the bar, where we desired a little more attention and there seemed to be no table service during the very crowded happy hour. Beautiful room with plenty of space even though we booked the least expensive. Very pricey.

Truluck restaurant - fabulous seafood and outstanding service. One of the best meals I have ever had (black sesame-crusted tuna). Dinner for 4 with a bottle of wine was $225.00, not including tip.

Will not return

WILL NOT RETURN. We went for a special occasion and booked the bridal suite to celebrate in style! I was really excited - we stayed at the Driskill before and thought it was nice. I never expected so many things to be wrong on one visit. There were problems with the room. The fabric was missing off the canopy on the bed and mini bar wasn't there. They brought up a mini bar, when asked, but it didn't work - it was warm. It didn't fit in the cabinet, so they left it on the floor blocking the table. The restaurant was closed. The website didn't mention it and pre-arrival email failed to tell us. Bulbs were out, a vent was hanging from the ceiling, the tub leaked, the shower glass wasn't clean - yuck! They comped us breakfast at the bakery ($20), which was totally inadequate. I didn't want free food - I wanted a sincere apology for screwing up my birthday and failing to rectify the situation. I did give them a chance to fix it. I got a generic reply from management that was a blow off. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY - THIS IS NOT A LUXURY HOTEL. Go somewhere else.

Mixed blessing - the nightlife can be heard IN the rooms. Insanely loud. Not good for quiet romantic trips.
