Family-friendly resort near Smoky Mountains with tons of activities
The Deer Ridge Mountain Resort is a series of small buildings on grounds rampant with wildlife. It is not unusual to see deer and turkey running about. And who could resist family-friendly amenities such as a playground, indoor heated pool, steam room, sauna, game room, tennis court and three seasonal outdoor pools? The resort's proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park means hiking, horseback riding and white water rafting are nearby. Rooms look more house than hotel with such amenities as kitchens, fireplaces and balconies.

Serene and Peaceful!

Needing some time to "get away" and relax, this resort was able to offer just that. We went during the off peak season so it was somewhat bare but that was just fine with us! Those scared of heights may need an adjustment period as our small balcony was about 50 ft. above the land - and we were on the first level! We had to drive on narrow roads twisting up a mountain. The unit could use a little updating/repairing.

Very little dinning anywhere near the resort. None onsite. Best to bring heavy groceries or you will be driving 20 minutes down the hill each way or more to find restaurants.

Beware of $50 Hidden Fee

The hotel was awesome. The roads going up the mountain are very narrow at times. Everything went good except that when I got there I was told there was a $50 reservation fee.

OK for the Money, Some Problems

It was a little difficult to locate the resort at night, you usually wouldn't expect to have to drive through a golf course, and the sign was underneath a more prominent sign. Staff were nice upon check, however, they preceded to charge me a $45 resort fee to use the "tennis courts and other amenities" I wasn't going to use anyway [3 night stay]. Pretty hard to fork over 20% of the overall stay when you thought you had already paid in full. Staff mentioned most online booking sites don't mention the additional fee. At that point I was ready to go elsewhere, but then you're stuck because you can't get your money back in full. The Condo we stayed in was outdated, yet clean, and the views were extremely nice, as advertised. The hot water heater made noise non-stop, but was bearable. Overall, not bad for the price, if you don't have to pay the extra resort fee and you plan on spending most of your time out. The trolley stops are about 7 miles down the road to get you to all of the area attractions which is a plus.
