Modern luxury meets 1920s grandeur in this downtown historic landmark
The Hotel Alex Johnson offers a thoroughly modern experience (flat-screen televisions, pillowtop beds) in a rich 1920s setting. Railroad magnate Alex Johnson built the retreat in 1927 (construction began the day before work started on Mount Rushmore), and its original details have been carefully restored (note the bricks in the lobby floor, some of which still show Native American symbols). Today the six-story building serves as a fixture in the historic district of downtown, surrounded by shops, galleries and restaurants.
Highlights
  • Elegantly restored historic landmark in the heart of downtown Rapid City
  • Home to Seattle's Best Cafe and Paddy O'Neill's Irish Pub
  • State-of-the-art fitness center
  • Recipient of the First Governor's Great Service Award and Governor's Service Star
Rooms
All 143 guest rooms at the Hotel Alex Johnson have been restored to 21st-century standards without sacrificing their original character -- think exposed wood beams and elegant armoires. Flat-screen televisions and pillowtop beds are the standard here, and some rooms also feature hot tubs, kitchenettes, wet bars and other upgraded amenities.
Dining
The Hotel Alex Johnson is home to the largest Seattle's Best Cafe in the country. In addition to fresh pastries and cookies, the coffeehouse also serves hot breakfast and lunch sandwiches in a relaxed setting with free Wi-Fi, HDTVs and a fireplace ringed by cozy leather chairs. Guests can also choose from numerous restaurants within walking distance.
Entertainment
Also located at the Hotel Alex Johnson, Paddy O'Neill's Irish Pub pours upscale beers and whiskeys from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. In the warmer months, snag a seat outside and watch passersby. Live entertainment comes through here on a weekly basis, and patrons can play Video Lottery, too.
Recreation
Health fans will appreciate the state-of-the-art fitness center (stocked with cardiovascular equipment and weights) at the Hotel Alex Johnson, while the on-site Paul Mitchell Salon and Spa invites the weary to relax and unwind.

Classic hotel

Stay was excellent, hotel was beautiful. Nice to see classic western hotel in such great shape. Only complaint was the air conditioner was a little weak, so room was a little warmer than desired comfort level

Great historic hotel with great vibes

The Alex Johnson Hotel is the tallest structure in town by about seven stories. The red neon letters at the top act as a beacon so we were easily able to find it without GPS. The coolest thing was the rooftop bar with great views to the Black Hills to the west and over the entire city. Restricted to guests of the hotel, it was very lively and fun. Downstairs is an Irish pub with live music. The location in the charming old part of town was perfect. The room was a generous size, newly renovated, and the service was excellent. All for a reasonable price. In addition, there is a large coffee shop with wifi and dozens of comfortable chairs. A great place to finish working on a project or just to relax.

I LOVE this hotel and Rapid City!!

I had no idea what to expect but WOW! The rooftop bar was wonderful: we had a seat by the window that overlooked the vintage neon and lights of Rapid City. The vintage movie theater across the street was dirt cheap and charming! The room was clean, quiet and comfortable. We had coffee at Seattle's Best in the morning but would recommend having breakfast at the restaurant across the street. The location was excellent for walking, shopping and taking pictures with life-sized bronzes of all of the presidents. There was a festival on the square next to parking (which is free but down the street) and everyone is just so nice!! I will return to Rapid City and I will stay at the Alex Johnson. I can't say enough about how wonderful it was!

The things the hotel COULD correct

The Hotel Alex Johnson is undoubtedly a cool old historic building and enjoys a central location downtown . Naturally, it has some deficits that derive from its age, especially very small rooms and inadequate parking (you have to park a block away on the uncovered top floor of a parking garage). What is really not acceptable about the hotel are the things that the hotel could easily fix if management cared more:  Venetian blinds that don’t close all the way, and no shade or inner curtains to cut out the morning sun pouring in  Room service that only runs from 11 AM to 10 PM, and doesn’t include soft drinks or wine or beer (even though there are two bars in the hotel)  Only a single helping of packaged coffee (caff or decaf) for the coffeemaker  No machines to purchase a soft drink or a munchie  A more extensive list of local restaurants besides the mere 3 or 4 who paid to be advertised in their brochure  I had thought the hotel didn’t even provide a telephone Yellow Pages, but it turned out they had new Yellow Pages and just hadn’t bothered putting one in our room yet  A second light for the “other” side of the bed (actually, many motels seem to think that only one person in any couple is ever going to need a light to read by in bed) Next time we visit Rapid City we will stay at one of the new fully appointed hotel/motels that now dot the surrounding area, and take a walking tour of historic buildings like the Hotel Alex Johnson.

Historic hotel

I stayed here for the history and that's what I got. It's not a boring modern place with no character, or faux character. But for the money given the prices in town would have been nice if they'd found a better place to stow the ironing board, and maybe had nicer toiletries, and cleaned the windows. It's a bit musty in the whole place, too. The restaurant upstairs has great views and the staff was great but the food was eh. And overpriced. Also too bad there's a charmless chain coffee joint on the first floor.

Road stop honeymoon.

My husband and I stay here every time we drive between from the Midwest and the Northwest. This was our fourth time staying at the hotel in the past three years. We love the history of the hotel. The beds and bathrobes are super comfortable. The roof top bar is classy. It's a romantic get-away in the middle of a long road trip. Bathrooms are dated compared to Hiltons and Marriotts, but in historic hotels renovations are often needed. The bed and furniture is excellent. I hope bathrooms are next up for improvements!

nice stay

I booked my room and paid online and when I arrived at the hotel I was told that I was supposed to pay an additional $14 dollars. $8 was for staying in a historical building and the remainder was never explained to me. The girl at the desk was very sincere in her apology about the charges but couldn't explain what they were for exactly. . She did give me a few coupons for a free beverage in the coffee shop which I thought was nice and also was able to give me a choice of room that was fantastic. The room was very nice and very clean. The bar downstairs looked nice and was pretty quiet but the ballroom near the lobby was very noisy because of a fundraiser that hosted a live band. The noise however did not carry over to the room which was very nice. Although it was a very nice hotel I would have booked elsewhere if I was warned about the extra unexplained charges.
