Friendly staff, all-hours food and a giant waterslide
Half a mile from Rushmore Mall, the Grand Gateway Hotel lures guests with its elaborate indoor pool area and all-hours dining. Rooms feature thoughtful details like allergy-free pillows and windows that open and close. Four national parks and monuments lie within a 90-minute drive -- Badlands, Wind Cave, Mount Rushmore and Jewel Cave -- and the Black Hills National Forest begins less than 10 miles to the west.Highlights
- Convenient to major area attractions like Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Custer State Park
- Indoor pool area includes a hot tub, arcade, pool tables and 130-foot waterslide
- On-site Perkins Family Restaurant and Bakery serves a full menu and is open at all hours
Location
Grand Gateway Hotel sits just off Interstate 90, a few miles from downtown and a half mile from Rushmore Mall. Mount Rushmore is about a 40-minute drive from here, and the hotel is also convenient to the other major attractions of the region.Rooms
Starting at 365 square feet, the rooms at Grand Gateway Hotel deliver standard amenities (free Wi-Fi, work desks, laptop-accommodating safes) with a touch of elegance (handsome wood headboards, one-off table lamps). The superior and deluxe rooms have sitting areas, and suites come with separate dining and living space.Dining
The on-site restaurant, Perkins Family Restaurant and Bakery, serves a full menu 24 hours a day, but is best known for its breakfast offerings: the "secret recipe" buttermilk pancakes are a huge hit, and the three-egg omelets earn high marks too. Also located at the Grand Gateway Hotel, Cheers Sports Lounge and Casino serves the full Perkins menu and draws a mix of sports fans and entertainment-seekers.Recreation
Kids gravitate to the indoor pool area, which features a 130-foot waterslide, hot tub, arcade and pool tables. Grand Gateway Hotel guests can order food from Perkins here and eat poolside. The hotel also has a fitness center with free weights and basic cardiovascular equipment.Transportation

South Dakota Family Vacation
The hotel rooms were clean. The pool was clean, but the hot tub was gross. Green water means GERMS! I would not allow my husband or daughter to go near it. We chose this hotel because they advertised a fitness room, and I am training for a marathon so needed to run a few mornings while we were there. One of the treadmills did not work. I had told the staff TWICE. They never put a sign on it and then when a different gentlemen came in to use it I told him it was broken. He brought a staff member in to look at it (the first staff person I had told) and the staff told him that they had not had any complaints about it. Really? The elliptical did not work either. You practically toppled over when trying to use it. Other than that, it was a nice place. I just did not like the dishonesty about the treadmill.

Great Hotel
Great hotel, easy to find and get in and out of traffic wise. Only downfall was the absense of a laundry room. We had to drive several miles to the nearest laundry.

Convinent to Interstate 90
It was very central to all the sightseeing that we did. The only comment I have is that even though Perkins resturant was right next door a continental breakfast would have been nice. Sometimes you do not want a whole big meal.

Be sure a get a map of the area with the highlighted scenic routes in different colors. We did a different colored route each day. The hotel was in a great location to do this.

Convenient location at a fair price
My husband and I stayed here for two nights while visiting Mt Rushmore, Custer State Park, Mammoth site, etc. We found the room to be clean, spacious, staff friendly. Cool indoor pool with slide great for families. Particularly liked list of restaurants, activities, highlights of the area with addresses and phone numbers provided by the hotel

Sightseeing tip:
Short drive from hotel
Visit the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, about 60 miles via IH 90 from Rapid City. Great way to end a day seeing Mr. Rushmore, Custer State Park, etc. Take the scenic routes to it then return by IH in time for dinner. Prehistoric sinkhole deathtrap for 50+ mammoths, etc. with entire skeletons, great, informative, fun tour.

Black Hills 3-Day Trip
Rooms are large and clean. Front desk staff is friendly and helfpul. Fitness center needs some newer equipment and equipment wipes to clean-up machines after working out. Hotel was full but soundproofing works well; no noise between rooms. Beds are comfortable, but hard pillows take some getting use to. Hotel is conveniently located right off of I-90. Overall, hotel is a good and affordable base for exploring Rapid City and the Black Hills but not a "destination unto itself."

Bad Hotel Experience
WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT. The photo on the webpage is not at all like the hotel. The hotel with its dark wood is reminiscent of something out of the 1970s. An unauthorized person was allowed to attempt to come into our room unescorted by hotel staff. Luckily, my wife and I were in the room at the time--who knows what could have been stolen otherwise. The staff was, in my opinion, less than concerned about the incident. Additionally, the room smelled like urine. While checking out of the hotel, the concierge didn't even bother to ask how our stay was. He acted as if he knew the hotel was sub-par as well. The hotel is outdated and not worth the money. Overall, a bad experience.
