Our family resort features a 62 bedroom luxury hotel / 6 executive lodge cabins with first-class amenities / 30 mountain cabins that range from rustic to deluxe. The hotel and executive cabins offer western inspired rooms with full scale resort accommodations - deluxe cabins are furnished with modern conveniences - the rustic cabins provide an authentic outdoor experience. Our rooms and cabins are equipped with high speed internet access / king or queen sized beds / balconies or patios in premiere rooms / fireplaces and kitchenettes in suites and most cabins. Memorial Day to Labor Day - enjoy western style activities - chuckwagon dinners / a cowboy breakfast / guided horse trail rides - or have some fun in the sun - take a dip in our heated pool / fly down our 180-foot waterslide / play a game of volleyball. The Lodge is conveniently located near many famous Black Hills attractions - we are the closest resort to Mount Rushmore National Memorial on the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway and a short distance from Custer State Park / Crazy Horse Memorial / Wind Cave National Park / the lakes and trails of the Black Hills National Forest. Our nightly shuttles to the lighting ceremonies at Mt. Rushmore is also a guest favorite. My Stay

The lodge was comfortable and pleasant. A little out of the way, yet once found was great. Distance from Rushmore and other communities in the area, were a little out of the way, be prepared to do some driving. Overall the experience was great and the staff friendly.!!

A lot of the amenities were not available, but I expected that because it was after Labor Day. Very nice hotel and was located perfectly in the middle of everything we were visiting.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

In Hill City, we dined at Alpine Inn and it was very good. Didn't have to wait that long. Another good place in town was Linda's Deli. We got sandwiches early in the morning for our day trip. The sandwiches were delicious and HUGE. We had half for lunch and half for dinner.

Lodge at Palmer Gulch

Great place for children and families. Would recommend it. Only suggestion would be that the hotel should make it a practice to bleach all sheets and towels! They were clean, but didn't have that clean scent and appearance of other hotels that use bleach.

Great Faces

Rustic and old. Room was spacious but lacked amenities such as lighting. Bathtub and sink we're chipped and cracked, water was unpalatable(tasted like iron). Breakfast was minimal. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Great location-close to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Parking was at a premium.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

Go to small towns-Hill City, Keystone, Custer and enjoy the local flavor. Scenic drives are well worth it. Beautiful country.

Week at Palmer

We had a great time at Palmer Gulch with the family. Our adult kids rented cabins in the KOA and we stayed at the resort. The pancake breakfast was a huge hit and I loved the gourmet coffee house. We needed hot dogs one night for a campfire roast and were able to buy everything we needed at the little store on the grounds. The kids LOVED horse back riding and the chuckwagon dinner. We were only 15 minutes from Mt. Rushmore so we went to the lighting ceremony. It's true, you never have to leave the camp grounds for entertainment unless you want too. They have music, waterpark, art, shopping, movies, laundry, restaurants all on the site.

Don't forget to hike Carney Peak and tour the animal loop at Custer State Park. Both of these trips are cheap and so lovely!

Anniversary Trip

A highlight of our trip to South Dakota was our stay at the Lodge at Palmer Gulch. When we mentioned that our stay was to celebrate our 46th anniversary, the desk receptionist arranged to move our room to overlook the forest and gave us a remembrance of the hotel. We will long remember the idyllic setting and the accommodating reception staff.
