Good service, well-kept rooms and games galore
True to its name, First Gold Hotel & Casino Deadwood stands on the site where gold was first discovered in Deadwood Gulch, back in 1875. Today the hotel draws a different kind of treasure hunter -- namely blackjack and poker players, and slot machine aficionados. Guests can choose from 11 on-site casinos or hop the Deadwood Trolley to other gaming halls around town. The accommodations are clean, quiet and comfortable. Historic downtown awaits a half-mile down the road and both Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial are easy day trips.
Highlights
  • First Gold Hotel & Casino Deadwood is home to 11 24-hour casinos
  • The hotel puts out tasty buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner (fees apply)
  • There is free parking on-site
Location
First Gold Hotel & Casino Deadwood sits a half-mile from the center of Historic Deadwood. Some guests make the walk to Historic Deadwood while others take the trolley. Both Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Crazy Horse Memorial lie about 60 miles to the south.
Rooms
The 199 deluxe hotel accommodations at First Gold Hotel & Casino Deadwood are clean, quiet and basic. Expect the fundamentals -- cable television with extra stations, free local calls, hairdryer, coffeemaker and iron and board. And be sure to inquire about Internet access when you check in: Most rooms have it, but some do not.
Features
First Gold Hotel & Casino Deadwood is home to 11 24-hour casinos, including the nonsmoking Terrace Casino. Games run the gamut from blackjack to video poker and the hotel boasts an impressive selection of slot machines (more than 300, ranging from $0.01 USD to $100 USD). The hotel puts out breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets daily. Think omelets with biscuits and gravy in the morning and dishes like gulf fried shrimp and prime rib at night.

A shlepp

It was a wonderful vacation. I loved Deadwood and South Dakota in general. The location of the hotel was terrible and the desk clerk wasn't always around. I would have never booked a room without a bathtub and I really had to soak after walking all that distance up a steep hill to a staircase and up a flight to an elevator to get to our room.

Money-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

Stay at Lead instead. It is a 5 minute drive from Deadwood and much cheaper.

More for your money

The staff was friendly and the room was spotless. If you are looking to save a bit on the room this hotel is for you. The rooms are smaller then normal, but who really goes to Deadwood to sit in their room. I can't stress enough even though the room was smaller, it was spotless and quiet. It might be a bit removed from the downtown, but don't let that detour you from missing; a friendly, quiet, and clean hotel.

Time-saving tip: In Hotel

The hotel is comprised of 3 buildings, make sure you take the time to get clear instructions on which building you are in, and the short cuts they put into them to save you wandering lost.

Clean, comfy, provided basic needs for a one night stay. Not the best I've ever stayed at but far from the worst.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

First Gold has buffet but quits serving at 8:30PM. We checked in late and missed dinner by just a few minutes. Went about a half mile down the street to the Tin Lizzy Casino. Decent food, friendly service at a very reasonable price. Two of us ate dinner for less than $15.(Hot roast beef sandwich and fries and country fried steak with mashed potatoes and veggies) And lunch the next day for about $11.(BLT's and fries) The price included soft drinks with both meals also.

Inexpensive nice hotel

Found cheaper rooms on [...] than the hotel could give us. It's the cheapest place to stay in Deadwood and it's a good, clean hotel too. It's on the edge of town which is good with us. It's difficult to find the rooms but once you understand the navigation, you can figure it out.

Off Season Price

Walking distant of Downtown (7 or 8 blocks) In hotel casino closed after 4pm/before 9am. other casino block away. No compl. breakfast at the hotel. I stayed here last May and they had a compl. breakfast. Enjoyed the town, went sightseeing- Mt. Rushmore area, devil tower during the days, easy drive to each.

The parking lot needs to be adjusted to fit bigger vehicles like my F150. I understand the limitations due to the geography. The room was more than I expected...great bathroom, hot water and comfortable. Bed was the best I have slept in for a long time. Price was good for last minute booking.
