Not wanting to drive back-and-forth to Spartenburg, I took a chance on this motel. It's fine, really, and I would come back. However, it screams "we put as little into this place as possible to make it profitable, since we don't have volume

Mexican is your best bet. Forget the "Japanse place" unless you get sushi (which I did not).
The America's Best Value Inn (Union, SC) was an uneven experience. The location was conviently on the by-pass west of Union where the area's business growth seems to be. There was nothing remarkable about the room - standard two double beds with
a table and two chairs. Bathroom contained toilet, tub-shower and sink (very generous in size). Towels and linens were thin, suggesting they had been in service for quite some time and were at the end of their life. There was a small frig and microwave which made some sense when my inquiry about where to have dinner was answered with a popular fast-food hamburger chain. The Continental breakfast was miserable in terms of options available and quality. There was no coffee in the maker when we went to eat and there was no desk clerk available to resolve the matter. The room was infested with small roaches.
We stayed one night at this motel and it was one night too many. Our clue should have been the No refunds sign posted at the check-in desk. The roomm was dingy, with markings on the wall. For about an hour during the night there was a party
going on in the rooms around us with people yelling and screaming. Guys were leaning against the outside of our door talking very loudly. Attempts to call the front desk went unanswered. The next morning at check-out there was a lame, Sorry about that, from the desk clerk. We made a poor choice in staying here. Don't make the same mistake.
