Great homely rooms in the woods

We stayed as a family for one night during the Middleton reunion. Great wooden clad rooms in a series of separate buildings. Very comfortable and in such a lovely setting in the woods. The wonderful Middleton Place gardens and house are nearby plus amenities such as canoeing on the river. Not the height of luxury but a special place to stay.

Inn at Middleton Place Charleston

Nice room with beautiful surroundings, the grounds are well kept. The staff at registration were very friendly and helpful. The Inn's Tabby cat was very sweet as well. Our dinner at the on site restaurant was 5 stars. Our daily breakfast meals were wonderful too. I will return to this Inn at any opportunity.

Wow! What a dissapointment!

To be fair and objective I must first acknowledge that the property upon which the facilities were located was an historic and graceful plantation, which lived up to its reputation. Additionally, the modern architectural design of the Inn at Middleton is truly noteworthy. That's pretty much where the good stuff ends. The amenities were completely lacking or insufficient by modern standards. No internet connectivity. Lukewarm and limited hot water, which could not allow for a full tub of hot water in which to bathe. Worn, unmaintained, and noisy plumbing (our room and a neighboring room shared the same screaming faucet issue: it was nerve wrecking.) Old 19" tube television with 12 channels (really?) Worn and unmaintained electrical fixtures in the rooms (no grounding.) Broken, difficult, and unsightly window shudders that made viewing outside a chore. Outdated and severely worn door hardware (the key barely worked to unlock the room and the old metal door allowed for noise to transmit through.) Relatively little insulative quality to the structure of the room. Due to the concrete and steel designs the room was freezing cold, which required that the noisy HVAC run harder (the nice fireplace did help, though.) Filthy, foggy windows made viewing the beautiful grounds nearly impossible and pretty much ruined the reason for booking the room. Signs posted stated that protecting the environment was the reason for not turning in the linens and towels, yet so many other things suggested that the entire theme was to waste as much energy as possible (eg. old high capacity toilet.) I cannot recommend this place to anyone who doesn't at least know these facts before booking. As I stated, the property and customer service was great. We did not bother complaining on site due to an event in the area and the unlikely ability to book elsewhere on such short notice and the hassle of doing so. I am sending a letter to the GM soon.

The Inn at Middleton Place is a long way from Charleston. Stay in Charleston or at one of the nearby beaches; and make a day trip to visit the plantations around that area. Its far more convenient.

Idyllic retreat with plenty to do.

We highly recommend The Inn in Middleton for anyone who likes the backwoods retreat setting. There's plenty to do, including horseback riding, trails, gardens and fine dining. The rooms are generous and rather rustic which only adds to the ambience. They offer either woodland or riverine views from large windows and a real fireplace in which you are encouraged to build one. Also worth mention is a 150 gal. bathtub, easily 6'x4'x2'. Enormous! Dinner at he restaurant [which requires a walk through the woods] and breakfast at the lodge were excellent. One caveat: The internet access offered is so slow as to be non functional. We will definitely return.

great get-away

This is a great get-away from the city. We loved the river/woods like setting. The hotel is so unique on a Plantation we loved the room set-up etc and wall of windows. Our only concern was the musty smell overwhelmed the stay inside the room. It is apparent that there needs to be some updating from the outside, and water leaks etc. If the hotel would spend some money fixing and maintaining this would receive an outstanding rating. Everything elso was great.

My review of The Inn At Middleton Place

The Inn at Middleton Place isn't exactly what one would expect. The inn is actually a group of buildings with a number of rooms in each. The architecture is unique as well - the only recommendation I would make is to be sure to specify a ground floor room if you have difficulty walking up a flight of about twwenty stairs. Our room had a fireplace and a view of the Ashley River which was pretty much obscured by the woods which the buildings are situated in. The room was clean and the bed was excellent. Breakfast was included in the price and it was a very good buffet. The Inn is located adjacent to Middleton lace which houses the best gardens we've been to with the exception of Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC. Admission is free when staying at the Inn. The dinner we had at the restaurant at Middleton Place was exquisite.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Charleston is about 14 miles from the Inn. Don't plan on going downtown until morning rush hour has subsided.
