Fair

Checked in early and room was not ready, thus had the staff store our luggage. Upon return that evening discovered our room had been given away and initially bags were missing. Ultimately bags were found and we were given a room that did not meet our requested specifications. The following day the staff were accommodating; but unable to provide refund for one night instead provided us a with a room upgrade.

our extended weekend

The hotel and its staff are great but if you are not into walking to the historic district and by that I mean down to the waterfront it is a hike. We did have a few concerns with the cleaning staff but it was minor but still for a 4 star hotel really not acceptable. Forgot to clean out coffee machine, no coffee left for next day and towels left on the floor not picked up. My other big issue and it may happen at other hotels is the parking or lack of. There is a parking garage next door but not connected to the hotel which offers a hotel rate. It is not explained well and I had a slight run in with the attendant. You park and then come down the elevator and exit onto the street, walk past a few businesses and then get to hotel. The only other problem is the cabs, we used about 4 different ones and by the 3rd we learned to ask how much. No meter was ever turned on. Once it was 10, then 15, then 7 so ask first and haggle. Probably done with Charleston for a long while, 2nd visit, I will miss the fried chicken.

great hotel with personality

This is a great hotel located right on Charleston's main drag (King St.). It is close to many shops and restaurants and you can get around without a car. The staff was great and the concierge was extremely helpful, he booked us a city tour and also explained different options to see attractions, while being conscious of our tight budget.

For those not familiar with the area, most restaurants are located down to the left for Calhoun on King St. (facing the park in front of the hotel) and most shopping is located right of Calhoun on King St. Hominy grill is over rated and usually has a wait time. Try one of the local cafes near the hotel for a delicious breakfast.

My best hotel stay, EVER!

The Francis Marion was an excellent hotel in every way. The staff in every department went above and beyond in friendliness and to accommodate our needs. The most comfortable beds I've ever had in a hotel. Lovely room and very clean. The only thing lacking was we did not have a small refrigerator in the room. Would recommend this hotel to everyone.

Market Strret is only a short wlak from the hotel, but right there on King Street there is exceptional shops and restaurants, just cross Calhoun St. and you're there.

Best Location in Charleston

When booking a hotel for Charleston we were tempted by all the pricey inns that offered social hours with wine & cheese or sherry. We went with Francis Marion mostly based on price & were glad we did. This hotel's location is so convenient for accessing everything in downtown Charleston - Couldn't have asked for more!

Good Value

This hotel is in Marion square, a good location in Charleston, close to the Visitors Center and near one of the free trolley pickup spots. Also, the farmer's market is across the street on Saturdays. Charleston College is right next door, so lots of parents and college kids staying at the hotel. The Barnes and Noble college bookstore is next door. The hotel lobby is luxurious with many comfortable chairs and couches and great chandeliers. The lobby was kept at a very cool temperature, needed a sweater and socks sitting in the lobby to read. Also, Starbucks is right in the hotel, which is convenient. The room was comfortable, though the bathroom and closet were small, and it was a tight fit with the doors so close together. There are two doormen at the front door, a nice touch. The front desk staff was friendly, though better do your own research on tours as they are very limited in what they suggest. The restaurant/bar was okay, it's a real mix of professional and unprofessional people (experienced and not-at-all-experienced) who work there. It showed in service and food/drink presentation. It's not all that interesting to walk around in Marion Square though, found it too quiet. If I go to Charleston again, I might stay in the Battery section, which is near the park by the water and closer to the shops and restaurants, maybe I would stay at the Anchorage on Vendue. Charleston itself is great, I would recommend it as a vacation spot. Fun things to do there are a carriage ride, city tour, plantation tour, house tours and shopping in the Old Market.

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

I would suggest bringing a good tour book that shows a lot of information in one place (like the AAA book) or have access to an internet travel site on a tablet or cell phone while in Charleston. The maps in Charleston do NOT show complete information needed in one place, like tour open/close times, plus addresses, plus trolley stops, plus pricing. You'll be looking at 2 or 3 Charleston maps to get all of the info that you need. Also, I would do some research beforehand, as there are a mind-boggling number of choices, and if your time is limited it might take up a good chunk just deciding what to do, how to get there, when to get there, etc.
