A great way to see Charleston

We were a little apprehensive, since many reviews of the FM have not been too complementary. However, I was at a conference at the hotel and didn't want to have to walk so we gave it a try. The location is perfect-King and Meeting streets run parallel thru downtown and many of the coolest stores/bars/restaurants/museums are on, or just off them. You can easily walk to almost anything you'd like to see and eat any kind of food you'd like. The staff were wonderful-very helpful and willing to try and accommodate us. The reservation went without a hitch, room was clean and smelled fresh, linen was nice, the bathroom was a little cramped. It's an older building but I think they've done a good job of upgrading. Noise levels were a bit peculiar-we couldn't hear the wedding band from the next wing over, so that was great. But the bridesmaids yelling in the next room seemed awfully loud! It's worth mentioning that the restaurant in the hotel has really good food, except the obviously packaged scrambled eggs. Otherwise the buffet breakfast is excellent, there's some really good stuff like the shrimp and grits that us midwesterners never encounter. Overall a very good experience, we'd go back!

Great staff and location

I have stayed at the Francis Marion before and as before they always do a good job. Staff was great and the hotel is very clean. The only drawback is that the rooms are are a little small, but this is the case with all historic hotels.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

There is nothing in downtown Charleston that is not within walking distance. Save $ by taking a cab from the airport rather than renting a car

great hotel with personality

This is a great hotel located right on Charleston's main drag (King St.). It is close to many shops and restaurants and you can get around without a car. The staff was great and the concierge was extremely helpful, he booked us a city tour and also explained different options to see attractions, while being conscious of our tight budget.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

For those not familiar with the area, most restaurants are located down to the left for Calhoun on King St. (facing the park in front of the hotel) and most shopping is located right of Calhoun on King St. Hominy grill is over rated and usually has a wait time. Try one of the local cafes near the hotel for a delicious breakfast.

Needs some work

Great location but no atmosphere. Lobby is very sterile. Could use a good bar and restaurant. Room was a little weirs as bathroom was literally next to the bed. You could open and close door while in bed. Beds were very comfortable and room was fairly spacious. I believe we were in a handicapped room because our door was double wide.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Awesome bakery nearby with wonderful croissants and scones: Macaroon Boutique @ 45 John Street. Kudu on Vanderhorst makes a good Italian cappuccino, but their baked goods leave something to be desired.

Was a Disappointing Experience

Great location and staff, but the room was a disappointment. The decor was tired. There was a musky smell. The bathroom was very small and awkward. And, there was a long wait for elevator service.
