Quick visit

The room was large with a nice King bed. It had ample closet space and two full (albeit small) bathrooms. The location is good; easy to get to upper King as well as to the tip of the peninsula. We would stay here again.

nice getaway

Nice free upgrade to king room with sofa on 9th floor. Very nice staff. Location was good for people like us who like to walk everywhere. Absolutley beautiful town to see. Only one complaint about hotel was grout in tub needs to be changed. Lower floors might be noisy. Got a very good rate for a beautiful hotel.

Francis Marion

Hotel was nice and historic. There is a Starbucks in the front of the building, as well as the upscale Swamp Fox Restaurant. It's location is perfect, being located right at the head of the King St. shopping disctrict and next to the College of Charleston campus.I paid $109 per night. Parking is $12 per night, which was really the only option and a bit expensive. I suppose the location justifies the room rates, but I wouldn't pay the $150/ night rate they were asking. The bathroom was extremely small, but I'm a guy and didn't really care. I was on the 3rd floor. My friends who were on the upper floors (10+) had constant issues with their heat and air as well as hot water. Overall, I would stay again.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

For the craft beer lovers, "Closed for Business" is about 2 blocks north on King St. and feature some great craft brews. Charleston Beer Works is a distant second. Go to Sullivan's Island and eat at Poe's. Not touristy, but a great little place to get cool burgers and seafood and beer.

Great experience

I had a fantastic one night stay. Ive stayed at other premier hotels in the Historic Downtown area of Charleston, but the comfort and class of Francis Marion is a cut above. Very happy with the hotel and its staff.

The upper King Street area has awesome places to dine if you don't mind waiting a few minutes for a table and once your done, there are several top notch night clubs in the immediate vicinity. Francis Marion is perfect location to start from.

Great Staff and room

We really liked the room. It was very comfortable and had a nice seating area. The bed was to die for ... so beautiful and comfy. Could have used a bedstep since I am short and the bed was high. The spa was wonderful after a day of walking! Everyone was really friendly especially the bell staff. They arranged transportation for us several times and advised us on routes, etc. The only downside was the location. It wasn't as central as I thought it was going to be. Charleston is really a walking town and I have difficulty walking. Next time I would stay closer to "The Market" area if only to save on the extra walking.

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

Take the tour of Magnolia Plantation. The grounds are beautiful. Not sure how they are in the winter, but early fall flowers were still in bloom and weather was great.

Should not be a 4 star rating

While the lobby and amenities are fine, our room had an awkward arrangement. One of the beds were about 2 foot from the bathroom and the bath was very small. Although the room was clean, it was not a 4 star room based on the furnishings or the layout. This is a 3.5 star at best in comparison to other Charleston hotels.

Disappointment in Charleston

The hotel is located on a very busy corner - King & Calhoun. Parking is adequate. Hotel lobby was beautiful but from there it went downhill. Our "deluxe" king room was not deluxe. The bathroom was very small, with 1 sink and the faucett spilled water onto the counter. You had to be careful not to slip when getting into the tub/ shower. The carpet was frayed and the maid service was terrible - as a small example coffee table was never cleaned, coffee for coffeemaker was not replaced and the air conditioner ran most of the time with damp cool air. Reception desk only apologized. Not worth the price. Will not stay at this hotel again.

Great location

We've stayed in this hotel many times. It's very pricey but elegant and comfortable. The staff could not accomodate our request to check in 2 hours early or the request for a queen or king sized bed. When you pay that much for a room, you kind of expect to get what you want. There is no pool, but it's quiet and the rooms and beds are very comfortable. The bathrooms are tiny, but we would stay here again especially with a better rate.
