Hidden Flaws

The room was very neat, and the bath appeared immaculate, but there was an odor upon entry, a stale, not fresh smell. At that time, there were several rooms that experienced ventilation problems:extreme heat, despite air conditioning applied. Manager was utilizing fans to help diffuse the issue. Fans simply don't work with closed up overheated rooms. It was a nightmare for me because it occurred late in the day, early evening and I had little energy to find a new room.

Unique, sparkling clean

Wonderful staff! The place is gleaming. It is in the perfect location. Our beds were so comfortable. The serve yourself breakfast was generous and the hot from the oven afternoon cookies were delicious. Free parking! Our room was loud as our windows faced a parking lot and a restaurant. We asked for a fan to combat the noise and it was in our room when we returned. That was the only issue, so next time we'll ask for the 2nd floor, street facing. It was a lovely, unique place--full of history!

Location, Location, Location & Price

I enjoyed sailing on the Madeline & the hotel gave me a great discount on the tickets $5 off & the boat Madeline gave me buy one ticket to sail & free for the next one because when you pay full price during the week that is what the add says on the Jailhouse Inn's website. They gave me the deal even though the Jailhouse said I would of had to make reservation with them. The seafood was amazing as well as the mansion & won some money @ the slots casino. My boyfriend enjoyed his birthday to the fullest. The room was spotless & the staff was more than helpful. I am going back in the Spring.

cute, comfortable, friendly

We stayed in Newport overnight for the Newport Music Festival. The place is cute but they don't overdo the jail-house thing. The place is small but not tiny. Our room was big and clean. Nice bathroom. Parking. WiFi. Great downtown location with many restaurants and attractions in walking distance. The view looking out the back of the hotel was not great and there was a pipe sound every once in a while. Recommended

Great location

People were friendly. The location was great. Quite noisy as a restaurant kitchen was right outside our window and they were shouting orders until 11PM. Good breakfast.

Quirky Inn fills the bill

The Jailhouse Inn in Newport,R.I. sits in the historic downtown area within walking distance of the visitors center, retail shops and the restaurants that line the docks. It is quirky because the have left the iron barred doors in the hallways from the time it actually served as a jail. The rooms will remind you more of a B&B with similarly small bathrooms but it is very well maintained. Parking is available off the the street and at the front door. the complimentary breakfast included everything from pancakes to cereal.

Park the car and walk to the main shopping area, visitor's center and restaurants on the docks. Save the gas to see the mansions.

Great price in a great area

The JailHouse Inn was just a really nice place to relax and get away from it all, even though everything you'd need is within a block or two. We loved the 'get your own breakfast and the tea/ coffee and cookies in the afternoon. There were no gym facilities, dining room or internet access available-just what the doctor ordered! Everything including great restaurants, cafes, shops, and sites just around the corner.

Nice location

The Jail House Inn is located in a lovely area of Newport within walking distance to most restaurants, shops, and boating. There was never a problem with parking as the Inn provides free parking to its guests. There is a very nice continental breakfast. A front porch adds to the charm. The room had two queen beds and one half wall of sky lit windows. The windows are stationary and the blinds are in need of dusting & repair - detracting from the view and lacking Newport's ocean breezes. The A/C does provide a comfortable room temperature. The rooms closet is very small and stores a fan, iron, and ironing board. There is a dresser for clothes storage as well as a desk for writing. The small bath is clean and nicely done with a hair dryer for convenience. The towels however have lost their white luster. Printed Tour materials are available to all quests. The staff was pleasant and helpful with directions.

Sailing from the main dock is affordable and a must do when in Newport. Sails as well as motor cruises leave the docks daily.

Authentic Jail Stay!

The Jailhouse Inn has gone to great lengths to retain the authenticity of a jail (last used as jail in 1983). We were completely satisfied with the 'conversion' of the jail to a B&B - the Bed was quite comfortable and the Breakfast (Continental) was qite generous. The Jail-house Inn's location is excellent for walking around Newport - it truly is a walkable town - with wonderful narrow streets and lots of alleys - giving one a 'sneak peak' of Newport's yesteryear. And it has lots of off-street, but safe parking - a real plus in Newport! All members of the staff we met were very accommodating - generous with good dining recommendations - and always available. The only drawback was that in Newport, they do not go to air-conditioning until Memorial Day and we had two warm evenings. Leaving the windows open created good air, but also allowed the street noise to visit us. We will go there again on another trip to the area.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Breton Point is a state park where rock-walking to feel the surf is an exhilarating experience. Lunch: the Brick Alley Pub is a long-standing landmark! Dress-up (ever so slightly) dinner: Don't miss the Rhumbline on Bridge Street - is close to the Jailhouse (4 blocks) and will be a memory-builder for those who seek it out!
