Newport get-a-way with a few surprises

We got there and realized they had overbooked the hotel. We had reserved a bi-level suite with 2 king beds. We ended up getting a one room, 1 king bed room. They gave us only 20 dollars off after many complaints to all employees and finally a call to the manager. They didn't even inform us of the situation when we checked in, and discovered this AFTER my credit card was charged and after we saw the room. It was a great hotel and great spot, but the customer service was horrible.

The good and not so good.

The hotel is at a great location within walking distance to all shopping and most dining. The room was lovely situated over looking the harbor. Also a plus close to the kitchen. The breakfast offering was hum drum ham cheeze and hard boiled eggs. Toast and cereals. Yogurt and tastless english muffins. The same fare we had the last time we stayed 3 years ago. The bed was a king size bed but unbelievably hard. The bathroom needed updating. The last time I saw a toilet that small was on a plane or cuise ship. Very uncomfortable. The maid service needed retraining. Most of the time the bed looked like it was made up with their two left feet. But the staff was very sweet and accomodating. All in all a little overpriced considering the amenities.

The good & the bad

Good - Great room with a loft. Good location on the waterfront with friendly staff. Bad - Bathroom became unusable and could not be repaired. Had to leave room and use the small bathroom in the lobby. Management could not move us and made not attempt to compensate us or move us to another hotel. Miserable night!

Quaint

Room was clean, not at all fancy, but had character. Very comfy king, nice seating area (again, not fancy, but functional). Staff was great - we brought wine bottles, left them on the table, and after the first night, housekeeping left us wine glasses and did a nice setup for us on the coffee table. Balcony is small - can't sit side by side, but views about half of the harbor and is still a nice place to relax and chat. No elevator, and that was part of the charm, but a long walk up several flights. Bathroom is small, but very clean. Front desk staff made nice dinner suggestions. Location is the best you can get in town, we thought.

Nice hospitality and great waterfront, in town location

The evening we arrived we were greeted with an invite to enjoy a very nice couple of hours of wine, cheese & shrimp cocktail with other guests in a comfortable, relaxing setting. Combined with a great in-town location for terrific dining and shopping as well as the wonderful waterfront harbor views if affords, the Harborside Inn and staff offers a terrific get-away weekend or week's stay at one of the best places in Newport.
