Very enjoyable stay

I chose The Priory because I tire of cookie cutter hotels that are obnoxiously priced. The Priory has a tremendous amount of history and character and is priced lower than other downtown hotels. I loved the detail of the doors and trim. Our room was on the first floor and near an exit but was very quiet. It was small, but we were there to sleep, so it was more than adequate. I'm sure other rooms are larger. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. It was our first visit to Pittsburgh so everyone's suggestions were greatly appreciated. We would stay there again.

A good value

My daughter and I stayed at the Priory for two restful nights. We enjoyed ourselves immensely. The room was clean, fresh and nicely furnished, and the bathroom and shower was just fine. Great continental breakfast and a lovely courtyard. The hotel is well situated just a little ways over the 9th Street bridge. We were able to walk from the hotel to Heinz Hall and the theatre district. The neighborhood is interesting with a real mix of recently renovated housing and some boarded up ones. Completely safe during the day, but I'd be inclined to take a taxi at night.

Not impressed

The hotel is in a transitioning neighborhood walking distance to the ballpark, which is convenient. The room was quite small and stuffed with large furniture. The bathroom had a small glass shelf above the pedestal sink, the only place in the bathroom to set anything. The hairdryer was functional, a small travel size. The wireless did not work in the room -- I had to step into the hall in order to connect to download mail and could not connect at all in the room. The room is so jammed with furniture there is barely room to move and again very little space to set anything. (The desk had the coffee maker on it, which left little space for much else.) Also, the entrance to the hotel is up a short flight of steep steps, which was challenging with luggage. On the positive side, there is a lovely outdoor patio space. Every housekeeper we passed in the hallways was cheery and pleasant and the rooms very clean. The air conditioning was nicer than many hotels, in that it didn't have that stuffy icebox feeling. Towels were fluffy and soft. For the price, it was lovely but mostly uncomfortable, and I wouldn't stay again.

The City Café across the bridge on Liberty Street had wonderful coffee and a delicious breakfast for a very good price. Also open for lunch.

Great hotel

We had a great experience at The Priory. Had read in reviews that one of the main concerns of this hotel was the neighborhood it was located in. We experienced no problems at all. We walked from PNC Field back to The Priory at 10:30pm after a Pirates game (about a 10 min walk) and never felt unsafe. There were many other Pirates fans walking a similar route and danger never crossed our minds. As far as the hotel, it is very quaint. Loved the vibe of the former monastery. The free continental breakfast in the refectory was surprisingly good. They also just recently started offering free shuttle service to many parts of the city. If there is one minor knock against The Priory is that you can hear the plumbing in rooms close-by. But it wasnt an issue that would keep us from coming back. For the proximity to PNC Field (walking distance), you arent going to find a better bang for your buck.

Cool hotel, bad location

The hotel was cute and close to the convention center (we were there for a trade show in the convention center). Room was clean and breakfast was good. However, the hotel is right next to a reception hall. There was a wedding right outside our room until pretty late in the evening. It was so loud we couldn't sleep, which is a bad thing when you are in the city for important business meetings! Also, the location of the hotel didn't feel super safe. Not HORRIBLE, just not super safe. There is a grocery store within walking distance and when we went to get dinner there a bunch of police cars filled the lot and were arresting some guys. No one acted very surprised, and even to us it just felt like what would happen in that part of town.

Weekday Getaway

We live in Pittsburgh and stayed one night for a night away from kids. We were impressed with the historical value of the place. The place is kept up very well and provided a comfortable and restful night of sleep. We enjoyed the included breakfast in the back courtyard, which was surprisingly quiet considering the location. We would go back again. This is the place to go if you are looking for a classy nostalgic comfy place.

A Hidden Enclave of the North Shore

This is the ideal hotel for younger folks going to see the Pirates for a weekend stay. The nearby pubs and funky bars are worth exploring and the staff at the Priory are very happy to both get you around (shuttle) and give you tips on where to dine and dance. Don't miss the tiny but excellent little hotel bar and if there is anything you want, be sure and ask, because they will go out of their way to provide it. The biggest negative for us was the antiquated phone system, which made it hard to communicate with the front desk when we were out on the town. However, the staff is extremely nice and the decor very interesting for anyone interested in history, art, and vintage furnishings. The breakfast is average fare, but the small kitchen does make good sandwiches. There are two sides to this hotel and the modern side is a tad more comfortable, though the older side has its share of charm
