Perfect!

Four of us stayed at the Shadyside Inn Suites this past week. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. From the outside, our building was not much to look at, but once we were inside, our suite was perfect. Everything was clean, all of the beds were comfortable, and the living room was far enough away from the bedrooms that the noise from the TV didn't disturb anyone who was sleeping. The only (minor) complaint that we had was that the toilet was extremely slow, and required several flushes. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the area.

perfecto!

My boyfriend and I only spent one night, but we both wished we could have stayed longer. We were greeted by very friendly staff members. They gave us a bag of juices and muffins for the morning and offered us cookies and bottled water. We got to our room and it actually looked like the picture (even when we got the most basic one). Plenty of closet space (the bed even had drawers underneath). The location was great ( about only a 20 minute drive to both the waterfront and Southside, shorter with no traffic). It's right next to Bloomsfield which is an Italian community with plenty of delicious restaurants and stores ( I lived here as,a student and recommend the Pleasure Bar). The Inns have a couple free parking lots, but the streets are free also in the evenings and on the weekend also.

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

Walk down South Aiken and you will find Bloomfield with plenty of great Italian resturants and more shopping other than Walnut street which is just a block away. The Giant Eagle is huge with a walk in cheese fridge for you cooks out there that may want to cook your own meal.

Location. Location. Location.

When you stay at the Shadyside Inn, you feel like a local. Shadyside is a safe neighborhood, full of students and families. The bus stop is right outside the door, and the Walnut Street shopping district (upscale chains, locally-owned food and drug stores, and plenty of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, etc.) is a 5 minute walk away. Fifth Avenue is remarkable flat and great for running or walking. The architecture is varied and interesting. The accommodations, rather than being typical hotel rooms, are 40-50-ish year-old converted apartments. My suite was meticulously clean. The bed was quite comfortable, with a memory foam mattress topper and nice linens. The kitchenette and bathroom were dated, but, again, meticulously clean and well-kept. There are a few idiosyncrasies due to the age of the building. The radiators make it difficult to regulate the temperature - the bathroom, in particular was uncomfortably warm - however, the windows can be opened, and there is an ac unit and ceiling fan. For similar reasons, I assume, the hot water temperature is extremely hot. The elevator is s-l-o-w, and sound from the hallways carries into the rooms. I found all of these to be minor issues. There is complimentary in-room coffee. It is L.O.U.S.Y. (see note above regarding Walnut Street to remedy this). I appreciated the complementary breakfast goodie bag (2 muffins, 2 apple juices, two granola bars) and the offer of complementary bottled water. There was plenty of storage space (2 large closets, a large dresser, and a linen closet) and many lighting options. Overall, my one-night stay was quite enjoyable. I think I would enjoy a longer stay, whether for business or pleasure. This may now be my preferred place to stay in Pittsburgh.

Great for "extended" stays

The hotel is made up of three converted apartment buildings located in the Shadyside area of Pittsburgh. Shadyside has numerous restaurants and bars as you would expect in an area populated by students, young (and mature) professionals. Our room (apartment) was well appointed, comfortable and clean. Pitt and CMU are less than five minutes away, as are the major museums.

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

For dinner try "Spoon" on Highland Avenue in East Liberty. Short drive (there is valet if you want) but on a nice day its a long but very nice walk through Shadyside from the hotel. Interesting, eclectic, delicious menu. Try one of the main courses which take the entree and prepare it in different ways.

Clean, Well Run and Off-Beat

Was in town on business. What a little gem! Great neighborhood for food and drink options. The building is (I'd guess) a WWII era apartment building -- nice break from the cookie-cutter chain hotels/ motels! Terrific staff. My only complaint was the bed, which is waaayyy too soft for my taste.

The sushi place on Walnut, (a couple blks away -- don't remember the name) was decent quality and very reasonably priced.
