Superb suites, rooms, and services smack dab in the city center

Doubletree recently renovated this city center pet-friendly hotel's 308 rooms, which include 112 one-bedroom suites. The hotel claims to have some of the city's biggest guest rooms. Every room has a pillow-topped bed. Other claims to fame include the on-site restaurant Bigelow Grille. Twice since 2007 Pittsburgh Magazine named the Grille to be in the top 25 restaurants in the city. The hotel offers guests many freebies, such as complimentary Wi-Fi, free shuttle service throughout downtown, and Wolfgang Puck coffeemakers in each room.

Highlights
  • Location steps from Pittsburgh's biggest businesses
  • Award-winning restaurant
  • Expansive entertaining and conference space
  • Rooms with many comforts of home
  • Free warm chocolate chip cookie at check-in
Rooms

All 308 rooms, including 112 one-bedroom suites, have been recently renovated with updated furnishings. Doubletree promotes the "Sweet Dreams" program with complimentary bedding amenities, such as pillow-topped mattresses, down comforters, and oversized pillows. Each room has a 27-inch flat screen television with free HBO. Also free: in-room Wolfgang Puck-brand coffeemakers and coffee. Free Wi-Fi comes with remote printing.

Features

Property amenities include free Wi-Fi and remote printing from each room, a free shuttle for travel around downtown Pittsburgh, free HBO for entertainment, and free "Sweet Dreams" bedding. Guests are greeted at check-in with a free warm chocolate chip cookie.

Well-kept, friendly staff

Stayed here with my wife and daughter over St Patrick's Day weekend. We were up the better part of the night due to loud drunk people in the corridors. The staff sent security up several times with mixed results. They gave us free breakfast coupons the next morning. For the price breakfast should be included. Nevertheless, clean, comfortable rooms, nice indoor pool, and friendly staff. I'd stay here again - just not on this particular holiday!

Hotel stay to see show at Consol energy center

Overall the experience at the hotel was good. We found it hard to find a good middle ground with the thermostat, and our room lacked a fridge. But the rooms were clean, we had plenty of room/storage, and the 7-eleven in the hotel lobby was a great convenience. It is within walking distance of much around Pittsburgh. We specifically stayed here to be close to the arena for our show, but you could walk to other areas of downtown if the weather is nice. A shuttle was also provided by the hotel which was a welcome amenity during our winter stay.

Central, no doorman

No doorman or concierge. There is a free hotel shuttle (for downtown destinations only, I think)that leaves "as need be, first come, first served" but a lifeline in a hotel not on a major thoroughfare and with seemingly lousy taxi services. Several banks of computers for guest use. Room a bit worn. (Need to ask for an iron and ironing board.) The restaurant (Bigelow Grille) is convenient, organic, and, it turned out, better and more interesting than some of the more touted in the downtown area. Plenty of fast elevators. Nondescript decor, though that's not really as important as other things.

Still in need...

It was very augured to get there, with the one-way streets, but when you arrive the lobby is off the street with single lane parking for check-in. Guest parking is around the back of the hotel and is charged to your room per day (Not in their ad). My room set-up was unconventional, with the bathroom sink in the room and the rest of the bathroom behind a door, with an anti-room. The bathroom was C-O-L-D! The heat lamp in the bathroom did not work. At night, you can hear every-one and anyone talking in the hallway, walking sounds from the guest above you and none of the doors close quietly, they SLAM! So if any guests were arriving in the middle of the night, your heard it! I did complain and they removed one nights parking from my tab, but I know they will not fix the problems. If you are going to this hotel to party, drink and fall asleep, this is the hotel for you! For a retreat or some quiet time after a long day in meetings, go somewhere else. Price does not meet amenities!

Not worth the money

It is an old hotel,it was drab, boring and lacked atmosphere big time! for over $200 a night you should have a little more amenities than a bottle of water and a "free" cookie, a continental breakfast would be nice, or at least free parking!! (another $20) Very little or no security, we had a group of shady characters hanging out in the entrance way when we returned to the hotel that evening and one was urinating mere feet from the doors :0( If I ever have to be downtown Pittsburgh again I will save the extra money and stay outside the city and taxi in!
