Over rated and dirty

I booked this hotel 3 months ago when it was touted as a 4 star hotel, offering a suite with a fireplace for a $100 special rate. On arrival, the desk did not have my reservation, and I was booked into a small businessman's room where the coffee pot was kept in the closet and patrons had to find a place to plug it in, the rugs were dirty, the porcelain basin in the bathroom cracked and dirty, and outlets sparked when I plugged in my laptop, causing it to crash. To add insult to injury, the coffee shop chain downstairs which name will remain unmentionable offered sandwiches but had no salt or pepper for same. This did not cause the counter staff any problems however as a cool indifference befitting the unmentionable chains' servers attest to. Finally, I don't think I received that discount offered as I left early -- and received no receipts from the desk. By that time, I was so depressed by the experience, I was just happy to get out of there.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Powell's Books is 3 blocks from the hotel, a wonderful bookstore. Unfortunately, it is 2 blocks from seedy transient hotels you must pass on the way to Powell's. On the other hand, those hotels are only 1 star less than Governor Hotel IMHO.

Good PDX downtown hotel

Have never stayed in a PDX hotel downtown - I usually stay in the suburbs - but I wanted to treat the girlfriend and wanted to be close to things downtown. This hotel worked well. We got lucky and our room was upgraded from a deluxe to a suite. Parking is a pain - valet is $27 a day and otherwise you have to self-park in the separate lot across the street. Housekeeping arrived early one day - they said they would come back but never did. Without the upgrade it seems a bit overpriced, but you're probably paying for location.

Great location and courteous staff

The hotel was in a great location. Walking distance to Powell's Bookstore, the food trucks, you name it. The staff was very courteous and quick to respond to any need. It was so quiet! Starbucks right beside the lobby. We'd stay again.

Great Value Hotel

This very centrally located landmark hotel is just perfect if you need to be in the middle of downtown. You can walk to lots of places. No need for a car or cab. The price is right. The hotel is old but well maintained. The rooms could be a little brighter but this won't deter from the overall rating.

Dining tip: In Hotel

Jake's Restaurant isn't really in the hotel but connected to it with a great staircase entrance from the hotel lobby. No need to walk if its raining. The food is superb, the bar area and dininig areas are comfortable and the establishment is well attended especially for lunch and dinner....not to mention happy hour.

Fabulous place to stay!

Starting with warm and friendly staff that is more than accomodating to your every need, this hotel takes you back in time to when comfort and care precede all else in hospitality. The hotel is located right in the heart of downtown, allowing easy access to all Portland has to offer. The rooms are comfortable and very well appointed. Size is limited, but fine for a short stay. Jake's Grill, located in the hotel, is an excellent restaurant with great service. Most importantly, the staff is exceptional, meeting every need and expectation!
